if we're in a cave why is the sky blue?
« on: April 18, 2004, 01:52:33 am »
Simple question. :)

If we\'re in a cave, why is there a blue sky? Shouldn\'t it be earth-like tones? (Brown, grey, orange, deep red, etc)

If there\'s a blue sky, that means that there\'s a atmosphere possibly thick enough to create weather.

So, is this discrepancy going to be fixed or are the walls just painted blue from the radiation of the crystal or simply colored blue by ? ?(

It might confuse players when a playable version comes out as to why there\'s no rain or clouds, but has a blue sky... while the setting is in a cave. 8*/
Precious and beutiful, it is happy. The only time when it is not is when it is in a shape of a tear.

Well I have another confusing question for you what came first the chicken or the egg, think about it! I know the answer :)

The sky is blue because thats how it was made, don\'t worry about the fact we are in a cave!

Actually, I agree with Saphire. I never really thought about it until he mentioned something. It seems kind of weird now that I know it...

Hehe. :P

I think I\'ve come up to an answer as to why the sky would be blue.  Well, actually two of them.

Answer one:  That\'s what the people in the art department painted the sky.  Notice that it still retains the texture of rock though.

Answer two:  It would probably be blue.  Nitrogen, the most common element in the atmosphere, scatters blue light.   If you use a telephoto lens and zoom in on a very distant object you will notice that the object looks bluish.  That is due to the Nitrogen scattering blue light.  If the ceiling in the large cave is high enough the blue light, coming from the crystal up top, would tend to get scattered about, thus creating a blue haze.

Have a nice day!

So, you are saying the Crystal gives off Nitrogen? That could be a possibility, I just never thought of that. :P

The first answer was just an obvious answer. I like the second one better. ;)

Yes, that\'s a good explanation, but the sky tone should be changed just a little (or a lot) to make it more fitting. Yours is an excuse, not an explanation. So I suggest it be changed just enough to shut people up.

Who\'s with me?

Well actually number 2 is the answer.  Number 1 was a joke.  However, the develoopers can color it any darn thing they like.  If you\'re actually interested in this here\'s a link.  I thought it was a fun read.

Azure Sun: Emits light

If the crystal is Azure then in theory the light it gives off should have a bluish color, since Azure is a tinted blue color it should therefore give off a bluish color sky, even though its underground in cave.
My name is NOT pronounced, \"Kway-per,\" it\'s pronounced \"Kye-per.\"

I\'d guess the cave ceiling/sky is blue because of the blue illumination radiated from the azure crystal.

yes if you havnt noticed already it does rain, there is an atmosphere. read the \"planeshift world\" thread. it explains alot. there is no mystery in why the sky is blue in planeshift. i dont know how this thread has gotten this far, i thought someone would have noticed the pointlessness of it all by now.

In Atomic Blue(previos release) the sky wasnt blue, there was no sky at all. Why is it now blue... if there is an explanation i forgot it :D
Yes, it rains, because... eh, its no rain, its just water falling from the roof of the stalactite.

AFAIR it\'s also on the homepage

AFAIR it\'s the Azure Sun (=huge crystal on the \"ceiling\", through which the (real) sun\'s light passes ...so the sky should be more azure then blue, but that\'s just a small tint glitch
