More useless stuff on the streets
« on: April 18, 2004, 05:42:08 pm »
When one try to think back to the middle ages, one must come to the conclusion that when look arround today we have like clean streets, no bumbs arround, ones in a while a police dude and so on. One must really know that in the middle ages where citties where run by \"wisemen\" wasn`t that orginized. When u look arround u should have carts, barrels, bumbs, boxes, allot of junk laying arround, guards patrolling end so on.

I know this is just the alpha release, but wouldnt it be nice if one tried to fill the streets as much as it could have been in those times?

have u ever played a good AD&D game tabletop? have u ever listened to a fm with a verry good quest.. the surroundings u play in to make the fantasy complete is based on nummourus of items that actually have nothing to do with the quest.. By describing a room for instance all these items help u create a picture in your head wich is the whole idea of a fantasy.

example.

U walk toward the gate witch looks like its made of stone, but while u near the gate a small sparkling comes from the surface as if its actually made of iron. When u cross through the gate u find yourself in a big circular room, with expencive looking banches on your left. in the middel of the room u see a stone-carfed figure that seem to represent a mighty angle that try`s to stike down a small figure standing in front of her with a way to great pole. behind the stateu u see a thick wooden table with arcane runes cut into the wood. on-top u see strange apparatus with boiling liquids inside. U walk into the room and notice that on your right a tiny person is staring at u.. He wears a long robe wich seem to have the same arcane runes stiched into it as on the side of the table. Some strange kind of force radiates from this person and u feel this disconfort while looking at him. As u try to make another step u feel a strange tinteling in your feet and are not able to move anymore. The small figure walks to u and starts to speak with a strangely powerfull tongeu. even u dont hear the exact words he speak u strangly realize that u know what he is saying. Stranger Dont make another move and listen closely!

notice as the details make it easier to create a picture in your mind.. This is what RPG - tabletop is all about. Ingame they help u by creating the visuals, but still they must be complete to make the fantasy alive..

Im all for statues and decorations on buildings, architecture, but to fill the streets with junk? It would be a waste of time the devs could spend on better things.

Hmm... junk... i dont like junk.
The problem is - in the middle age junk was everywhere, ppl just threw their junk out of the window, no matter what it was, so it could happan that someone pour his pee on you.... which isnt very cool.
I agree that junk could be in one or two areas, but not everywhere... that would be annoying.

more static items wich could fill the place up a little bit. and NPC`s like animals, rodents...

hellyeah!

Always dissapoints me when i see a nice, pristene city center in a game that\'s supposed to be \"medieval\"... :( Where\'s the flee-ridden bums? where\'s the piles of garbage? where\'s the rat NPCs that you so often must train on? :P
Precious and beutiful, it is happy. The only time when it is not is when it is in a shape of a tear.

O, well thats not bad, you made it sound like you wanted piles of poop in the streets or somethin. Trees, flower gardens, barrels etc. aren\'t IMO junk...

BTW We already have barrels and crates...

although this is a rpg, this is also a mmorpg. not that we wouldnt enjoy or appriciate random junk and atmospheric enhancers like a pile of dog poop, having tons of objects like that can not always be done in a game like this. mmorpgs are seriously downsized compared to other games in the detail department because some people computers cannot handle it. sometimes the servers cant even handle it. so you cant just have all that kind of stuff laying everywhere. maybe in the near future things like huge lifelike detail can be acomplished but with the given technology i gravely doubt it.

I like the idea of junk in the streets. I also think you should be able to pick it up, kick it, throw it, etc. I\'ve always been a fan of maximum interactivity. Have passing NPCs drop items like \"Empty Bottle\" or something every once in a while. I mean, there are going to be randomly wandering NPCs, right? If not, there should be. In Arcanum, they had that, and we all know everything should be like Arcanum. The point there is, it wasn\'t difficult and worked fine.

Then again, players drop plenty of junk... *points to Bones on ground*

So you\'re saying that every city must be trashed?  No city may look nice?

As Hydlaa is the capital city of Yliakum why would the rulers of said city let trash be in the streets?  Why is it that they couldn\'t have specialized people that are there specifically for keeping the streets clean?

And do keep in mind that the goal of Planeshift is not to conform to other RPGs.  The goal of Planeshift is to create a unique game set apart from others.  Therefore when designing and \"decorating\" the city, they are not going to go to other RPGs (3d or tabletop) and say we don\'t have that so let\'s put that in.  So do not use other forms of roleplaying as an example.

From the PS main site -

Quote
Ducts that have been dug out in the rock are used to dispose of human waste. Larger rubbish and bodies are simply thrown into almost vertical and apparently endless wells. Nobody seems to care about where all of this junk finally ends up, since the stalactite theory is only devised by some Xacha scientists and has not been proven yet. Dead bodies are eliminated the same way. Though discarding dead in such a callous fashion would seem rather shocking, neither of the two main faiths at Yliakum requires particular care nor reverence to dead bodies. To the people here, a body is simply a non-functional apparatus or an empty shell with no soul. However, nothing is ever thrown into the lake. The law forbids this disposal method not only out of courtesy to the Nolthrirs, but also to protect the seaweed population. Polluting the lake is one of the few crimes punished with death.

I dont believe that its impossible, there are many creative ways to insert these items and keep the server and client fast enough to play the game, like items that will desolve after a while, or a max nr of interactive items that may actually lay on the street, while the other part is static and part of a map...

Also i believe that most items could be loaded and cashed at the clients side instead of trying to load it all server side. And use the server only to check gamerules and as a information portal of the other clients... like client \"a\" drops an item, sends this info to the server, the server just sends it to the other connected clients and let the client console cash that information. If by packetloss a client doesnt recieve that info the client will just not show it... this way u clould reduce lagg from the server and server load.. it all possible...

There should be bums that on occasions get liquored up and really rowdy and try to start something with you. Then you can rough them up and sort them out. Would add some amusement and uncertainty (for lack of a better word) to the game.

Or a rabid dog that moseys into town and needs dispatching.

Or even bums that beg for money, items, etc. There could also be a chance that they may reward you for your generosity and give you a seemingly useless item to them but valuable item to you.
