Invent a new ranged weapon.
« on: April 20, 2004, 06:08:24 am »
Since guns, didn\'t work so well and like its obvious most people don\'t like the gun idea, I\'ve decided to take the liberty, of creating this thread, to invent an all new authentic 100% original non-copyrighted ranged weapon.

Here\'s how you could make it easy to state:

Weapon name: (Has to be original)

How many hands needed: (One handed weapon, two handed weapon, or one in each hand type weapon)

Weapon Base: (Is it mostly made of metals, woods, or both)

Projectile: (What it shoots)

Type of impact: (How does the projectile hit the enemy; does it blow up, does it pierce, poke, cut, etc...)

What it looks like: (Pictures would be greatly appreciated, so we can visualize what you have created)

Strengths: (Good things about this weapon)

Weaknesses: (Bad things about this weapon)

Costs: (Is this ranged weapon easy to maintain? Are the projectiles needed expensive or are they plentiful)

C\'mon you brainiacs and rangers, I know you have thought of something, post them! Oh yah BTW it would be nice if a dev came and checked this out see if its a good or bad idea, you know trying to help create an authentic made only-in-planeshift ranged weapon.  Maybe whoever came up with the best one, will be put in the game, I don\'t know I don\'t speak for you guys, but just a thought.

This is not a primary weapon since it\'s used mainly to stun/poison an opponent.  But this is good assassin weapon nevetheless.

Weapon Name: Stalker

How many hands needed: Two.. when operated

Weapon Base: Wood

Projectile: Darts

Type of impact: Poke  (no dmg at impact at all)

What it looks like: Thin, Long wooden tube, about 24\'\' in length.

Strengths:
Can only be used primarily by players that researched the assassin skill(or something like that :D).  It can stun an opponent for 5-10 seconds.  It can poison an opponent(HP decrease).

Weaknesses:
1.  When used, it cannot be a primary weapon.  The process of putting it away and equipping a real weapon takes time..
2. Darts come without poison or stun poison.  Assassin has to apply it before using darts, otherwise they are useless.
3. Miss chance is great since it\'s unpredicatble weapon and you have to aim it into someones bare skin.  So miss chance is large.

Costs:  The blowgun doesn\'t require any repairing. Assassin has to stock darts.  Assassin has to learn the skill of applying poison or go to specialist..
Placing poison for darts is not cheap at all.

I know it\'s simple and all, but just an idea that came into my head

I dont think the blowgun falls into that category

OK I was active in your last thread so im not going to disappoint here.

I have 2 weapons. One is for a magic orientated player, the other is a for a sword or axe wielding warrior. This is a 1st draft and ill make modifications to the idea if there is an obvious inbalance.

Weapon 1 (Magic style weapon): It is worn on the head yet does not fire a projectile as such. It is more of a magic aid.

Weapon name: Open to suggestions.

How many hands needed: None.

Projectile: Magic energy with a hint of disorientation.

Type of impact: Mental.

What it looks like: Metal headband with a crystal attached to the front of the band that has the ability to concentrate mental energy at long distances. I will draw up a diagram later today.

Strengths: Is able to disorientate an opponent through the use of mental energy making them succeptible to attack from the attacker. Reduces their ability to deflect attacks for a certain period of time and they sustain a slight increase in damage when hit.

Weaknesses: Causes the user to incur a loss in stamina and defense also rendering them succeptible to attack from a 3rd party for an undetermined period of time.

Costs: The only cost is stamina. The weapon can only be used after the users stamina recharges back to 100%. Perhaps the recharge time could vary depending on another skill.

Other acting influences: The chance of making a successful attack depends on 2 contributing factors.

1. The level of a skill associated with this ranged weapon, the higher the level the greater the chance of making a successful attack.

2. The level of the opponents skill in deflecting such attacks. The higher their level the less chance of making a successful attack.

Weapon 2 (Malee range enhancement): It is attached to the primary weapon and gives it the ability to be thrown accurately and also allows the weapon to fly in an ark so it returns to the user.

Weapon name: Carrier Pidgeon (this name is not set in concrete, yet I thought it was appropriate due to the movements and objectives of a carrier pidgeon).

How many hands needed: Two Hands.

Projectile: What ever the primary happens to be, except at a distance.

Type of impact: Combination of slashing and stabbing.

What it looks like: Attaches midway along the weapon or towards one end so long as the weight is evenly distributed on each side of the device. Looks somewhat like a blade/wing, (more to add).

Strengths: Gives malee weapon users the ability to have a ranged weapon that has the potential to deliver a strong attack.

Weaknesses: Due to its weight and shape the range is not as far as other ranged weapons. Although it makes up for this in attack damage. Due to its mass and shape it uses alot of stamina. At lower skill levels you can actually cause harm to yourself on the return of the weapon. The higher the skill level the less chance there is of you injuring yourself catching it when it returns.

Costs: Costs stamina which in turn limits the rate at which you can deploy the weapon.

Its just occured to me that im strapped for time, so ill have to add more detail and thought to this post a little later.

Heres my try:

Weapon name: Spitter

How many hands needed: one handed

Weapon Base: flesh with chitin-alike hull

Projectile: acid balls

Type of impact: on impact the ball collapse and the acid is all over the target

What it looks like:  A long but thin insect with many legs, When weared  the legs are wrapped aound the arm. The head is near the schoulder, the bottom over and in front of the hand.

Strengths:
  • high rate of fire
  • acts as light armor on the covered arm
  • no malus in hand to hand combat
  • around 20-30 balls in reservoir

Weaknesses:
  • short to lower medium range
  • long time to equique
  • prohibits other armor on covered arm( only body armour without arm wearable)
  • needs to be fed or goes in stasis: before or when you equique it, you must feed it with nutrients for it to stay awake, if it goes in stasis while worn, you cant use that arm or unequique it till it is again awake.
  • refill of acid reservoir needs time ( ie continous) and a liquid of mineral salts in water (to get from your alchemist or cook-for-krans), for refill and feed second hand must be empty
  • its possible to kill/destroy it, when critical hits on arm would result in destroyed armor

Costs: amunition is moderate to find/build, if unequiqued no maintenance is reqired, nutriates suffice for around 2 hours awakeness

edit: spelling

Weapon name: hopiliabow

How many hands needed: two handed weapon

Weapon Base: similar to crosbow

Projectile: small swords/daggers

Type of impact: it pierces, same effect as a stab

What it looks like: Projectile impailed in victim

Strengths:
1. Use for newbie swords + daggers!
2. V. damaging
3. Projectiles recoverable

Weaknesses:
1. Chance of enemy weilding Projectile
2. Hard to carry that many swords/ daggers with you
3. Moderate time to switch weapons

Costs:
1. Cost of projectiles vary some are rare others plentiful.
2. Requires some maintinance
3.Weapon expensive and hard to build
Under construction

It is through suggestions and critisisms that we improve our ideas

well... why make this list ranged only?? close combat weapons can be posted here just the same!! i\'ll make the first one right away:P

Weapon name: Katar (those who play multiple rpg games already know what i mean)

How many hands needed: It consists of 1 in each hand, and can not be eqiuped in 1-h only.

Weapon Base: Metal and iron only

Type of impact: Cut, slash, pierce

What it looks like: A sort of oversized dagger/undersized shot sword that has a sort of vast glove on it, and can break up to the left and right making 3 large blades that are verry tin.

Strengths: Extremely vast, good close combat weapon, does enormous piercing and cutting damage when used properly.

Weaknesses: The size makes it fast, but also makes you have to stand on less then a arm-length of the victim and thus gives a large-weapon user a advantage if he/she keeps distance.

Costs: It is very expensive to make, because of the mechanism inside to make the blade split, and to get the blade strong enough not to break when split up.
Maintenance is verry low (just some polishing now and then) when the weapon is made properly cause then it will be almost impossible to damage.

Weapon name: Shock-Bolt (because the bold being fired comes as a shock, read below

How many hands needed: epends on what type. Two-hands are however preferable for higher accuracy.

Weapon Base: Metal, although the bolts can be wood based

Projectile: Bolts (Possibly specially adapted)

Type of impact: Pierce, like any other arrow or bolt (poisoning or other effect optional.

What it looks like: It looks like a sword. Honestly! Exept that the sword has a hollow inside which contains a spring. IT also has a trigger on the hilt, which when pressed opens the tip of the swords and releases the spring to deliver a one time shot.

Strengths:
- Your enemy definately does not see this coming.
- Can be used as a sword too. This leads to...
- You do not need to re-equip if you are suddenly faced with melee combat.

Weaknesses:
- Only one shot.
- Not very accurate and less powerfull.
- Very slow loading.

Costs: It\'s slightly mechanical, so you need to keep it oiled. It\'s also a good idea to keep the sword straight, or your aim will be off.

Nitrine
Two-handed
Looks like a normal bow but has two long spikes poking out of the bow slitely to the side of where the arrows will exit the bow. A long block coming out the back of the bow in the middle to hold 2 arrows in place and so the bow can be used as a spear in close combat. the block has a slit in it so it will not effect the firing power of the bow. Designed to be held horizontally not vertically like standard bows.
Strengths: can fire two arrows plus the close combat advantage
Weaknesses: hard to use and wears out faster than most other weapons

hmmm...so far we have a blow gun, a magical psychic helmet thing, a weapon from Half-Life, a large crossbow that shoots daggers, a katar, a medivel cane-gun, and a bow that can be used in close combat.  the last two are the only ones that are actually original and the \"Nitrine\" might actually be interesting if not ungainly.
I\'m not racist, I hate everyone equally.

Ok this is not entirely original but who cares, really.

Name: No idea as to a name.

Hands: One (maybe two)

Base: Wood

Projectile: Spears

Impact: (See above and if you can\'t figure this out you get the spiffy orange
dunce cap)

Appearance: Not sure how to describe this, but i\'ll give it a shot.  A long tapered,
flat piece of wood with a curve at the rear.

Strengths: Relative fast to use and also quite powerful (It chucks spears so what do
expect).

Weaknesses: Spears don\'t just lie around you know (also imagine carrying 20 spears at once)

Costs: The spears, but apart from that nice and reliable.

P.S. This idea isn\'t original as it was actually made by Australian Aborignes (is that how you spell it?)
I reserve the right to be wrong.

Can\'t say if my idea is original or not...
I\'m thinking of a crystaline throwing object (Projectile)... Some sort of unstable/fragile crystal, that breaks into thousands of pieces when shattered, and thus creating a small cloud of crystal particles. The particles will only do poorly at damaging bare skin and armor but will cause much trouble to eyes and breathing and will completely blind you for a period of time unless you have reflexes (some sort of reflex throw) fast enough to close your eyes. Likewise with holding your breath. The crystal will be thrown by hand og used in a sling. By nature the object is fragile and therefor also somewhat expensive.
Krans have some affinity for this weapon. Other races can use it as well, but are required a higher dexterity skill.
Not the most commen of weapons they will only be sold in specialized shops (One for crystals and chemicals) or by Krans.

Weapon name: Shattercrystal?... I really don\'t have any good ideas for the name

How many hands needed: one handed

Weapon Base: not aplicable (some sort of crystal?)

Projectile: Small pieces of shattered crystal

Type of impact: Some blunt damage if thrown directly at target. Else cutting?

What it looks like: Because of it\'s fragile state, no refinement will be performed. Chunks of yellow crystal.

Strengths: Area effect, very effective in paralyzing opponents

Weaknesses: Somewhat expensive and fragile

Costs: Not exactly cheap, they\'re not too expensive either as they can only be used once...

Note: I thought of that Spearthrowing stick to... Just to see that it had been mentioned already

ok  looked through this and might have original idea (even if it is a little weird). also if someone want to explain how it might work im open to suggestions .

name: poison-frog-head glove

hands needed : 1

base: leather/organic

progectile: frog-head spits acid balls

type of impact: splatters on contact

appearance: frog-head somehow attached on top of a leather glove

strengths:
- acid burns through light armor and skin to do damage (multiple shots could make it burn through better armor i guess)
- its a magic glove unlimited ammo
- head does not impead gloves actions(can still carry things)
 -rapid fire

weaknesses:
- does low damage
- should be used at long range, acid splatters

costs: free but hard to find from monsters (or maybe you could attach the head to a glove somehow)

Ps: got part of this idea reading the spitter weapon
Madness is merely an extension of sanity.

Name: Cow/Penguin Siege Engine

People Needed For Maximum Effectiveness: 3

Base: Varies - Can be wood or metal, only the wealthiest people can afford the metal ones.

Projectile: Poisoned, Rabid Cows/Penguins

Type of Impact: Splatter, or if the cow/penguin survives, massive biting and poisoning.

Appearance: A large wooden base is fit onto several, reinforced wood wheels. A board is placed at an angle on the base, with various types of reinforcements that are usually magically enhanced. Two posts fit in a slot on each side of the board. A wide, short piece is placed at the bottom end of the angled board. Each end of a strong string of hundreds of pieces of entwined wire is reinforced onto the posts of wood. the loop is tightly stretched over the needle.(This is what all the Cow/Penguin Siege Engines have in common. Some are endorned with intricate dwarven designs, some have automated tools that automatically release the string, and some might even have additional magical enchantments. It depends on the creator\'s imagination and how wealthy he/she is.

Strengths: Quite effective against organic targets. Causes extreme panic among troops. Rabidness actually spreads through magical means. Many types of poison may be applied. In case cows are not available, penguins may be used.

Weaknesses: Although it\'s a siege engines, completely useless against non-organic targets unless it needs a red/green painting job. Over usage of this weapon might starve local cities that depend on dairy farms for survival. The rabies part of the cows almost never works because the actual cow has a low chance of surviving when launched. In addition, the poor cows/penguins are badly treated.

Costs: Varies, but is usually quite expensive. It\'s also difficult to convince farmers to lend their cows for ammunition. As for rabidness, it is sometimes dangerous to go look for a rabid wolf to contaminate the cows. For poison, it is not required, but greatly increases effectiveness, especially because it\'s difficult for cows to administer rabies when they are dead.

*I\'m not sure if this is original or not, but if cows aren\'t original, then I\'ll go with penguins instead >=D

Weapon name: Striking Frog (because how the weapon attack)

How many hands needed: One handed weapon, Two handed for increase accuracy (accuracy increase when the other hand is empty).

Weapon Base: Mostly metal.

Projectile: Spear

Type of impact: Piercing

Appearance: It looks just like any other spear, except for a that the lower half of the spear is slightly thicker then the upper half.  The lower half contains a strong metal chain that is roughly twice as long as the spear.  The internal mechanism contains two spring, one lining the inner tube of the lower half of the spear that\'ll propell the front part forward.  The chain contains the second spring that pulls the spear tip back after firing it.  With the help of a skillful tug, the spearhead can reload itself.

Strengths: No ammo limit.  Fast reload (The act of tugging spear reloads it).  Can be used as a melee weapon.

Weaknesses: Due to the complex/delicate mechanism, the spear\'s durability is lower then other weapons and has a chance of jamming when durability reduce to a certain level.  The range is also limited (only two and a half spear lenght, two for the chain and a half for the spear head).  Require a high skill level in related weapon to use it to full capacity.

Costs: Due to delicate mechanism, the weapon needs a moderately high level of maintainance.
