An NPC-less quest
« on: April 25, 2004, 02:15:00 am »
Today a few guys and I were bored, and decided to start a short quest without NPCs. We planned stuff, but we were a small group and eventually it ended before it started because RL called some of us...

So putting the crude planning we tried to do aside, I think it could be great if people will post in this thread how they want the NPC-less quest to be, what role they want to take, etc.

What does this quest need so it\'ll work? (every thing will be explained below)

  • Players that are willing to play \'statics\'.
  • Players that want to be the \'adventurers\'.
  • A general theme.
  • The plot for the prologue.

Statics
\'Statics\' is a term I just thought about. Statics will be players that act kinda like NPCs, but are actually intelligent (well, I hope :P). Statics will give broad directions to the \'adventurers\' in the way to the goal.

Adventurers
The adventurers will be the players that will go between the statics, collect information, and try to reach the goal.

The theme
The theme is what the quest is all about.

The prologue
The prologue will give more or less a background for the quest. While the theme is just what the quest will be about, the prologue is already part of the game, as it\'s being acted. The prologue should have a general plot behind it that will be followed in the game.

Example: What we wanted to do in our improvised quest was this:
Theme - A brawl that almost ended in the death of the attacker. The city guards are sent to find the more-or-less victim and arrest him.
Prologue - A bit of cussing in the tavern between two, then one of them attacks, the other beats him nearly to death. The attacker runs to the temple screaming. There are witnesses in the tavern, the plaza, and the temple.
Statics - The witnesses and the severely beaten attacker.
Adventurers - The city guards.

This was what our quest was supposed to be like. I don\'t know if that\'s what should be used in the organized quest. Ideas are always welcome.

What can you do for the quest?
  • If you want to participate, awesome! Say what you want to be (adventurer \\ static), and please participate in what the theme will be about, and how the prologue will be.
  • If you don\'t want to participate but want to help, you can come up with ideas for the theme and prologue.

Please join, if it\'s gonna work out well, waiting for CB won\'t seem so long :))

Btw - I don\'t care if you think this isn\'t going to work, I don\'t care if you think it\'s stupid. If you don\'t want to participate in any way, press the Back button. No need to ruin it for anyone that wants to take part (mods, it would be nice if you\'ll back this up a bit).
Also, try to leave personal and non personal aggretions aside. This quest should be for the community as a whole, and not for idiotic arguments.

As I said when I was there, I will be participating as a \'static\'.
Please note that being one doesn\'t mean you have to stay in one place, just answer where you are when asked. ;)

Adventurers should be relatively easy to come by.  I suggest multiple parties of them.  With names like Alpha, Bravo and Charlie; or A, B, and C; or Red, Blue and Green. :P

Good post, btw.

Thanks :)
And personally I think the parties should be named in colors. If anyone wants to use Alpha, Bravo etc, he should go play America\'s Army (wich sucks, btw).

Edit: Oh, and how could I forget? My side. I think I\'ll be an adventurer, but if there won\'t be enough statics I\'ll be one.

Are you handing our crystals as a reward? That would get more people to participate...
You should plan it all out and for 1 day, on a set date, have the quest open.

Eh, not as easy as you think.  Trust me.
It should go on all week.  (which is why we need multiple parties)

Doing it for only one day would seem alot easier that doing it for a whole week...and would require less people... But if you can make it work, great. I will probably do the quest, but I cant be a static cause I never know when I can be online...

For the statics, wouldn\'t the fun of it also be to try and find this person, and say they aren\'t on, that could be the equivalent that they are in another town or something?  The static would have to come on eventually, but the adventurers dont need to know who he is and where he is.... I mean, one of the other statics could say, well Monketh always eats dinner at Kada\'s, so try to find him there at 22 hours ( +4 hours GMT).  I think this is all just common sense, so just ignore this post  8) .

Btw, I could be a static, if you payed  ;) .
Nah, just joking, I\'ll be a static.

Oh yea, and we could have that say you have to find the murderor to win the quest or something.  There could be a murderer who \'kidnaps\' or \'kills\' the statics (witnesses) so that it becomes that much harder for the adventurers....

Perhaps someone else kills the attacker a while after he leaves the temple?  Then kills the witnesses.  Doing this would mean that the second murderer holds a grudge and could blame it on the first.
Complicated, eh?  :D

I do not have time to play, unfortunately, until June. But I am more than willing to give ideas, and here they are:

The quest starts off pretty clean, with a simple search-and-arrest mission. However, our heroes quickly learn that the first brawler, who attacked the victim, was a theif, pickpocketing the victim while they were rolling about in the Tavern.

To make things more interesting, the victim is a mage of the dark way, who has had many a scuffle with the law. The theif had stolen a rare crystal from his person, which the mage was studying.

The Heroes gradually find out that the theif was hired to steal the crystal by a mysterious hooded figure.

About half-way through the plot, our Heroes learn from the victim who has been doing some research that the crystal can be used to raise people from the dead as the slaves of the holder of the crystal.

The Heroes must then strive to find the crystal, perhaps negotiating with criminals for information or spying, until they reach the home of the mysterious person (Perhaps somewhere in the caves?)

Then they have to figure out how to get it from him ^^

Of course, then they also have to decide what to do with the thing.

Yeah yeah, I know, it\'s cheesy. But cheese is fun.

Anyway, I\'d like to hear thoughts.

P.S. If I can play, I will be an adventurer.

I guess that if it was common sense you wouldn\'t think about posting this :)
E.g. Static - \"I haven\'t seen what happened, I only heard the screams. But I\'m pretty sure that was in the tavern at the time. He\'s usually there between

I remember that once I was giving quest to greet-kill Giladrial... and even gave reward
but people were like \"I can find more crystals faster\" so bleh.

Anyway, I\'m a professional static (as everyone knows)... oh no, wait, does that include actual talking? ;)
