Lag: The Stuff of Nightmares
« on: May 01, 2004, 10:15:26 pm »
I write this message as a newbie, who downloaded and created a character on the day of this message, and I would like to say hello!

Secondly, I would like to rant about my problems with the lag that is created while I play the game Planeshift.

As I logged on, and finally entered the world, a wave of seemingly endless lag struck me; the aforementioned monstrosity caused me 10 second delays or more between each action as I crawled along the game world like a sloth.

My reaction was similar to this:

[Reminiscence]

\" Why! Why have I been cursed with this lag, the pain!@$% (involuntary twitching) !#*& \"

[/Reminiscence]

Hastily, I attempted to log off the wretched device, upon which I slouched back into my chair in dismay at the lengthy intermissions.

After I regained full use of my appendages, I began to put into words the question that had appeared due to the problem itself:

Why is it that I suffer from such lag. I would not expect this to occur.

So, in turn, I traveled here to learn more of my crippling disorder, known as \'Lag\" (see Reminiscence).

I was wondering how the others manage to get by, if they have this trouble at all. For those of you who wish to view into the life of my computer, I have prepared this statement:

Computer Manufacturer: Gateway
Processor: Pentium 4
RAM: 768 MB
\'Hard Drive\' memory: Approximately 70 \'Gigs\'
Graphics Card related Items: Nividia Geforce 2, or something of the like.
Sound Card: If I could remember...
Non-Telephonic Accessory for inter-connected linking of multiple systems (I think they call it the Internet now) Setup: Cable/DSL equivalent
Hobbies: Crashing; Fragmenting
Status: 10% Leprechan, 20% Orthodox Methodism, 70% Computer (Not sure about the rest, may be rat infested, :) )

Thank you very much for any replys you may send my way.

Greetings and welcome to PlaneShift, Talcos. :)

A quick would\'ve supplied you with a few answers regarding lag issues in the current Tech Demo.

Basically, lag here is not caused by network slowdown, but by unoptimised code and several memory leaks both client and server side. Hopefully these problems have been addressed in the next release, codenamed: Crystal Blue. But for now, you\'ll have to live with it I\'m afraid.

Not everybody experiences lag troubles. I don\'t myself, usually. Although it can happen randomly to anyone and there are even certain areas of the world which will render your character unusable if you were unfortunate enough to fall in them (but this is extremely rare).

Thank you for your well-planned (and humorous) first post and welcome again to the community. :)

Ah, I see, I thank you greatly. I find this \'Planeshift\' a most interesting creature to study.

I am very greatful that my confusion has cleared, and now I have a scapegoat for my ills.

Thank you again. :)

If you want to know your real system specs go to Start > Run > \"dxdiag\"

Than you\'ll see what sound card installed, with Direct X version and graphics card etc.

Becuase \"you couldn\'t remember what sound card you had\". ;)
