Oh my Poor CPU
« on: May 06, 2004, 03:32:13 am »
I sat around waiting for the world to load for a while.. wondered why it was taking so long..

The program pins my CPU at 100%

Hmmm... no wonder it\'s taking frigging forever.

Could this be remedied by looking for ways to optimise your code to reduce processor load?

At the very least, could you give us a loading percentage bar or something?

I\'m running the latest update ( gives me some sort of error on the first line however )

Athlon XP 2500
WinXP
512 PC3200
Radeon 8500 64

~ Thanx.

You have just picked a bad time to try and log on.  The server is acting strange.  Some of us regulars can\'t log on at all today.   :(

I think it\'s the same reason as why the game is running \"laggy\".

It\'s becuase of some momory leaks both server and client side.
Probably fixed in CB.

It\'s not just memory leaks that cause \"lagginess\" but also the levels are quite complicated and the \"old\" CS engine isn\'t as optimised as it could be.  I was under the impression that the long first-time loading delay was caused by the initial lighting calculations.  It is necessary for the CPU to be used 100% - if it were (say) at 50% then it would take twice as long!

Correct me if I am mistaken, but doesn\'t OpenGL always use 100% CPU? It\'s a forever-loop after all, that is in no way controlled or slowed, so it will always try to go as fast as it can...

Well, the very first loading delay has to do with relighting, always give it a long time before deciding it\'s frozen.  If it took any less than 100% of your CPU at startup, then it would take a lot longer to load.

Once you\'re in game, many people experience very low (~1-10) fps, which many mistakenly label \"lag\".  This is just due to general suckage, even if you have very good hardware.  Hopefully some of these problems will be remedied in the next release.

Give it an hour, if it doesn\'t finish by then, well, there\'s still not much we can do.  How much RAM does your computer have, what speed CPU and what kind of graphics card?

I\'m getting some real slowness too. I don\'t mind waiting the 3-4 minutes to load the world but the FPS is god awful. My min is 0.18 and a max of 12.13. Heres a config of my system.

CPU- Intel Celeron 2.0GHz
RAM- 384MB DDR266
OS- Windows XP Home Ed
HDD- Western Digital 120GB
Video Card- GeForce 4 MX 440 SE 64MB (PCI)(Don\'t ask)
Internet- ADSL 896kbps (up) 1.5mbps (down)

All have corrent patches and drivers.

I\'d say for you it\'s the graphics card. I used to have a GeForce III TI 200 and had fps values only a little better than yours. Might be RAM too. Did you run anything else than Planeshift? Try closing all other programs when running PS. :)

Yeah. Right after that post I ordered another 256MB of RAM so I hope that cures it. Since its gonna be asked at some point, the reason why I have a PCI card is becuase I have no AGP port so I have to use PCI. If the RAM doesn\'t cure it I might buy a PCI GeForce 5200 maybe all I need is the extra video RAM. A list of my problems is,

Long load up. The first time you load the game its supposted to take awhile but every time I have to wait 5 min to load the map.

Can\'t shut down PS. When I hit the exit button and I hit OK the game totally locks up.

Horriable FPS and I mean HORRIABLE.

I suggest the next release have the ability to turn down graphics settings.

you can turn down the graphics settings its a separate program in the planshift program folder call config or somthing like that.
