Lag...newbs read this!
« on: May 08, 2004, 07:46:13 am »
Ok, so I am new, logged on for the first time tonight, and yes there is lag. There also appears to be a lot of complaining about lag. So let me set a few things straight....

My Hardware (Commonly reffered to as a God Machine ;))
CPU: Intel Pentium Hyper-Thread 3.2 GHZ
Memory: 1 Gigabyte
Hard Drive: Western Digital SATA 180 GB
Graphics: Geeforce FX 5600 256 MB (800 mhz core)
Internet: T3 line (Yes, I said T3, God Bless Universities)

So that\'s my machine. And I STILL experience a lot of lag. So unless yours is more powerful, which I doubt unless it\'s a server, you will have lag

But that\'s ok. It\'s a game in development, hell, it\'s a FREE game in development. I am more than willing to put up with some lag if it saves me $15 a month and $50 for software.

Lag is a part of life. It happens. I would like to extend my personal thank to the PS team for trying this approach, and to let you know that there are those of us out there who understand how hard the development process is. Great work guys, keep it up ;)

Let me be the first to welcome you to the planeshift community Xinshadow.  It\'s always nice to be able to welcome an intellegent person to the community.  I also second your approval of the dev\'s work so far.

WELCOME!!!

Lag is also caused by players \"glitching\" around.   This affects anyone and everyone, so there is no getting around it.  But I\'m sure you\'ll discover the fun of glitching yourself soon...

Anyways, Welcome Xinshadow!!

Welcome on the forums!

The lag is caused of some memory leaks both client and server side. The (CB) Crystal Blue release will hopefully fix some of these \"bugs\".

It doesn\'t matter how good your pc is, it doesn\'t matter how good your internet connection is, you\'ll always have this!

the code of MB is still quite dirty, but from what i hear, it\'s getting a very good rub now :]

one of the problems, from what i hear, is probably the memory leakage

can\'t wait for CB!! :D

p.s. just bought a geforcefx5200 yesterday and now i can play with a bit better settings :]
p.p.s. yea, i\'d love to have a geforcefx9500 too, but don\'t have time nor money for it ...but it\'s too bad that i didn\'t buy that 5600 (or was it 5700) in germany for 99? :(

Does anyone know if the devs will leave some \"glitches\" in CB like they did in MB?

haha, it\'s almost imposible to solve ALL!

So yes.. most will be fixed but don\'t forget that it\'s still in beta! The final game will have less \"glitches\" and CB will have :)

actually not ...the classic idea behind is this:
alpha - first real releases, ultra-buggy, most features aren\'t there, usually not public
beta - still quite buggy, most of the features are in now, can be public
gama - usually doesn\'t happen, but if it does, it\'s usually because the devs just realised there\'s still a major bug or lack of features, just before the finished thing.

...sooo, pre-alpha means more or less: \"erm, we\'re still aaaaageeees away from the real deal, and there\'s little to no features in it yet\"

i don\'t know if this is relevent i have a fairly good computer but i also experience lag but it seem\'s to me that the longer i have played the less lagg i get when i first downloaded planeshift i could barely move my char but now i hardly get any lagg at all ( been playing for about 4 month\'s) and i have never really done enything to tweak my computer\'s perfomance other than regular maintenance
