Usernames and playernames...
« on: May 13, 2004, 12:54:55 am »
Hello. We\'re not allowed numbers or symbols in our names, and yet we\'re expected to think of a unique name? u_u I would like it if we coulr have a unique username, and then a non-unique playername, which is what others see. People don\'t usually have unique names in real life anyway. :)

And why cant you think of a unique name? There are millions of unique real life names, and we will never have even close to a million PS members. All you gotta do is throw some letters together...hmm lemmy think
-Halmon
-Metathra
-Zalphorp
-Tyranium
-Yewstynian
-Perfilina
-mythepanthiamuitusaphilangthos

Copywrite Icefalcon 2004, any use of these names will result in death by Icefalcon\'s mighty Azure Light Ball thingy :]

While icefalcon might be right that a unique name is just a few random keystrokes away, a system somewhat like what you asked for, Gold fusion, might be on its way. When we shift over to CB from the current version, the devs are going to ask us all to sign up with email addresses- so that will be somewhat like the usernames you asked for. Unfortuately, I think they will still require player names be unique- but with an in-game name generater that will be that much easier.

Okay. I don\'t want some random name though, I want to choose a name that I like. I\'d really prefer it if player names didn\'t HAVE to be unique though...

Symbols and special characters in names make me think FPS game like Delta Force Online! Original Names are good because it shows you put some real thought and effort into atleast one part of your character :]

I think unique names are required otherwise the \"/tell\" command would not work.

If you are really desperate because you cannot think of something, try out this link:
http://spitfire.ausys.se/johan/names/
this is a nice site that can generate tons of good names, and you can even select a categorie if you wish to be specific.
These here are just 5 examples out of a 50 roll:
Dulaithing
Aigcatas
Naralil
Pelcatol
Glamdursil
and if you dont find anything usefull, just re-roll and you get a new set of names.

That would be the reason for the unique username - private talking, item sending, etc.

Thats...interesting. Heh Ive never seen stuff like that before...kinda cool :] Not that I would ever use it, I mean if you cant come up with a name, you must be stupid :P  Those NPC and Village Generators would be useful if you were creating your own game...

To be honest, one thing I like about this game is the fact that there are no number in people\'s names and stuff like that. To me it ruins the setting for people to have a name like Bob2640 or Kn1GhT. How many people in real life do you see walking around saying \"Hi. I\'m Death09364.20674845659876598648675!\"

In my opinion, unique names without numbers should be used in an RPG game like Planeshift, otherwise it\'s just another Hack and Slash game like Diablo, where there are not a lot of creative minds when it comes to names.

Now, on the other hand, symbols like \' and - could be still used effectively, because they could represent actual people\'s names. However, I would also be against _ ; : ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) + = [ ] { } \\ / ? > < . , | ~ ....(did I get them all?) ;)
