Dangers of no 56k in Planeshift

Just a question, but would a lot of negative things happen in Planeshift was not 56k friendly. You think people with 56k\'s would get mad?

Since most of the world is on 56k about 60%-70%. Would be it be crucial for Planeshift\'s success to make the game available for people with broadband and narrowband?

Everyone feel free to respond. This is a question that prolly a lot of people with 56k would most likely worry about.

Personally, I think the people with 56k need to update their connection, 56k is outdated, you can get broadband for little more or the same price
But for those that...can\'t, they will be happy to know that their 56k will work

it\'s not neccesarily true that planeshift needs to be 56k friendly in order to succeed, after all, it\'s completely free, that will draw a LOT of people. I don\'t think it would really be fair to the enormous number of people who use a 56k. but it\'s not really essential to the survival of the project...

Low bandwidth is not a requirement for the modem people out there if you decide you don\'t care about them.  But it is a requirement of your server if you expect or want to support a lot of people at once.

1k/sec/person means that about 150 people take an entire T1 line from the server.  10k/sec means you can fit 15 people on the same T1 line.

Which would you rather? ;-)

I think you will find that in alot of cases its not a matter of just updating. Prices vary from country to country and so does availability.

\\o/, 56k for little more or same price? Broadband really isn\'t that expensive. Most of the people i know had 56K, but all went to broadband after getting the first 56K bill. A 56K bill was like 250 euro\'s per month, when doing less with internet then when you have broadband, while broadband is available from 14.95 and doesn\'t have those extra costs per minute.

While Broadband is affordable in Australia it is by no means even close to being cheaper than 56k.

Broadband is cheaper than 56k (for me anyway). It\'s also much more comfortable. 56k people should update to broadband. The only people who need 56k are those who use the internet for only menial tasks such as recieving/sending e-mail. Gamers should be on broadband.

Mr. Vengeance has a good point, people with dial-up take up less bandwidth on the server allowing more people in, broadband takes up more bandwidth therefore reducing amount of players allowed in the server.

No, his point is the less bandwidth the game uses, the more people you fit on a server.  Broadband users can\'t take up anymore bandwidth that a dial-up user.

As far as the cost of internet service goes, your area really does affect the price. we have the 2Mb service from charter, it costs us $61 dollars a month, my parents live in an area where the options are sattelite or 56k. they pay $98.56 a month, we have 56k services here in cape that go for $9.99 a month. dsl costs $46 if you\'re in a good area. Some places here the dsl is ungodly. and really that\'s the cheapest high speed you can get in this area.

until we started getting student loans, there was no way we could have afforded to get the good service. and I\'m pretty satisfied, we\'ve had one interruption in service due to a server crash, in four months, when we were on 56k, we had at least one crash a month, and it died every time there was bad weather. so spring was hell.

We\'re getting Cable for about $30-$40 around D.C. Pretty good deal. 56K *would* be cheaper, but not by enough to make it a big deal...
