Support for Naturally Speaking chat
« on: May 27, 2004, 12:28:47 am »
Does anyone know if you can run a \"
Naturally speaking\" Program such as Dragon while
running planeshift? This would aid in speed chatting, as you
could speak your sentance and then just press Enter! Has anyone
tried? Does anyone actually HAVE Dragon Naturally Speaking?
Because of speed issues in a MMORPG, it is obvious that audio
chat will never be implimented, but if Speaking programs are
compatible, it might just help the people out there (me) who can'
T touch type.

The idea of speaking into the Mic and having the text automatically be placed down is excellent! Too bad so few games are able to have Voice Communication like Half Life. I guess VC would be too laggy...

But this is one hell of a nice substitute! :)
Precious and beutiful, it is happy. The only time when it is not is when it is in a shape of a tear.

It kinda depends.
If this program runs in the background and types what you say into the window in focus, then probebly yes. If it needs it\'s own special window open, then I doubt it\'s compatible with PS.

Btw, have you used this Dragon thing to type this post?

I have copies of [Windows] 3.1, 3.11, 95, and 98, too. Not to mention various versions of MS-DOS

I think you can get programs that run in the background and allow you to speak commands into Windows.

If I'm right, then it might just be a matter of configuring the program correctly.

If anyone can try, then I'd be pleased to know the results

I' M thinking of upgrading if someone can pull it off in PS.
I really don' T know what' S up with my '
S.

The newer versions of Dragon Dictate - Naturally speaking actually work everywhere within windows (using the current focus), but I doubt it will work with PlaneShift. I just don\'t think the textbox where you usually type could be recognized, as it doesn\'t have the standard windows textbox handle to access it.

That is sad. Pogopuschel dashed my dreams upon the rocks that line the beach seperating reality from fantasy. :(

Back to the topic of this thread.

I have used dragon naturally speaking with the current engine successfully.  The main problem was that voice recognition takes a fair amount of processing time much like a game and made the lag even worse.  Solution:  blow $3,000 on an alien ware desktop and you will be styling.  There are other countries that make kick butt gaming machines.  Anyone of them would probably work.  However, whatever machine you buy it had better be more powerful than Niagara Falls or something like that!

However, even on my wimpy machine, so as long as I didn\'t move around while I was talking...it worked just fine.  So, plan B is don\'t move around while you are talking.  Plan A is definately alien ware.:D

To clear things up permanantly {'} is an anpostrophe in ASCII. Though why you would write the code instead of pressing the key is beyond me.

If what I read is correct than I could start using Dragon Naturally Speaking in the MUDs that I play. Right?

Great news from Fish! And just to set the record straight, the reason ' was showing up instead of my apostrophe is because the computer I was using at University had this site listed as blocked, so I accessed it by translating it through Altavista.com. It seems that Babelfish messed up my apostrophes for me. Oh well.

If you know if there are any other interesting things Dragon can be used for then don\'t feel shy to post!
