I was just about to mention this.  All messages appear in the chat window but the local chat will appear in the chat window and in a speech bubble.  The ability to turn off speech bubbles(If you just like the good ole chat window) or to squelch certain peoples speech bubbbles(but you still get messages from them in the chat window) is also a good idea.   In City of Heroes, it gives it the comic book feel, while in a game like Planeshift it  will give the feeling of you\'re actually talking to the person infront of you.

It also is implemented in another game called The Saga Of Ryzom , and it works quite good , thats why I sugested it.
