I was just joking about the \"TM\" thingie.

Also, we\'re talking about skins, not models.

For now...

Maybe a possiblity is requiring all skins to be reviewed before being used. That way, GM\'s could check that no one else has the same one (unless the creator allows others to use it).

Thoughts for the future...

I don\'t think it\'s viable to allow _every_ player to have their own skin, but I think a variety of skins, plus clothes should allow players to look unique. New skins can be downloaded by running the updater when the artists release more. Players should not be allowed to create their own individual skin this way so licensing issues will not arise. This needs to be integrated into the game, not just as a visual feature. For instance, one could buy clothes from a tailor customized to their liking (size, color, material, style). This allows the developers to control the style of player\'s clothing so that the game has a consistent feel. I don\'t think we\'d want to see people running around with nike t-shirts, or silly drawings made with MS Paint.

Well the updater downloads it\'s files via HTTP using libCURL..
Don\'t think it would be such a good idea to make ps requier it. Maybe some kind of external application?

I could make a tweaked Lww version for submiting skins, i lake of time to do anything right now, but i have something like this in mind since some time, in the meantime peoples could just post their skins in the texture section of Lww , and wait to get an approved flag by the devs.
I did finaly found a work :))

I\'m back.
I think we should just allow GM\'s to remove any stolen skins. An aproval system would be annoying and you would need people who would examine skins and play the game constantly.
An external downloader would be difficult, because the players are in the game. You would need to log out and then type in the characters name in order to get there skins. The updater portion is important to Planeshift, so it really shouldn\'t be a problem if the game portion used it.

Yes, we can always deal with problems later. So the logic will be as follows.

New player in vicinity. Check server for skin URL. Not present? use race default. If skin URL is present, download skin (using libCURL? or maybe just raw sockets) to cache directory under art/ for the player name (e.g. art/skins/cache/icebreaker or similar). Show the skin on the player. When player is sighted at a future time, check for a cached skin in the art/ directory so re-downloading is not necessary.

I think many people wouldn\'t mind if others use their skin, so GM decisions should be made on a per-case basis.

A central storage area like LWW would give the skins idea a good start. Skin hosting could be free, and the skins could be managed (and flagged like you said, if we are going with GM approval system). If worse comes to worse, the server could solely allow skins hosted by LWW (dunno how this would be on your bandwidth tho :P).

Hmm, what would happen if a newbie connects, and there are 2,000 people with custom skins? And the newbie is like \"WTF I WATN TWO PLAY PLAENSHYFT OMGLOL\" and has to sit for an hour waiting for the stuff to download because he is on dialup 28.8 k D:

like everyone i think my solution is the best   :p
being submitted on lww , they ll be included all at once with the next update, and be reviewed by the devs, i dont think than auto-downloading crappy/unmoderated skinns is a good idee, if peoples wants to use a different skin instead of the default one, they  could just tweak their client, else i think it s better to go to a merchant or something , and ask him to change the skin

It should be possible to use the default skins while downloading-on-the-fly, or make downloading entirely optional (i.e. you download your friends custom skins, and everyone you don\'t know just kinda blends in to the background)

I wanted to have everyone with a normal skin, and then you can add a custom skin. People with a custom skin will have an extra option when you target them so that you can start getting their skin.
I might be able to make this a completely client side mod if this doesn\'t go in CB. Make a server with a list of players and their custom skin that the client can bother.

Well yeah, it really depends on where you are going with this idea. If you want to get it into the game, theres a lot to be considered. If its just a mod, go ahead. If its cool, people will get it.
