Comments on demo
« on: May 04, 2002, 07:23:53 pm »
To not flood the developers with comments and bugs reports they probably receive in abandon, I\'ll post some of my issues here.

First of all, the speed really must get better. Are there people here that actually get *excellent* framerate in OpelGL mode?

Also, I really would want to be able to have a free look around with the mouse. I can\'t see what\'s happening! Also, turning is much to slow when not walking-- it\'s a little better when you are walking. Walking itself is too slow, too, though.

I also hope the character animation will be better and this is just a quick fix to make it work. And will there be better character-look customization? I get to see the same dwarf twenty times over. :) I want my own unique look.

The music sounds really great, but it plays with a lot of gaps, which makes it quite annoying.

And I guess everybody knows about the bug where you get stuck in the fountain or fall through the floor...

I\'m not putting the game down, because it looks really promising! I just hope it\'ll get better. Reassure me. :) The character generation screens (and procedure) are fantastic!

As you know, that is a tech demo, just to give an idea of the look of the game.

About the framerates it\'s 90% a matter of drivers.

In my PC (PIII 1.2Ghz and nvdia geforce2) I get from 15 to 50 fps when no players are connected.

With players connected it\'s worst, but we are working on that and will be better in the future.

The CS Team is working with us to improve performance of the 3d world itself.

But I would like to highlight that there are a lot of polys in that scene. We haven\'t used fog or far plane in this demo, so if you go in the main roads and you look at the plaza, you will have a lot of polys on screen. Other games normally don\'t allow you to see that far or they simply lower the number of houses scattering those around.

The performances will get better and in the future you will have more settings to tweak performances lowering the details. But for now you just have to wait a little.

I hope that you enjoyed what you have seen (dispite the bugs that will be removed) in the demo.

Bye,
  Luca.

The problems may be partly drivers, but I think mostly not, because most people seem to have the falling through the floor problem, and clipping through walls and such. If most people have the problem, its probably not the video cards drivers fault. I have the problem myself, and I did update my video card drivers.

No major gripes besides that. Good job so far. Mouse look would be nice, and better turn rate, but they are things for later on. Main thing is to get it working properly. Right now, as it is, I can log on and have the game work roughly 20 to 25% of the time. But that is completely normal at this stage in a games production.

he was talking about the fps not the falling through the ground problems... those probably have to do with there collission stuff or something

can i make some suggestions for the next demo?
1. can you make it display your x,y,z coordinates on the screen... that way later when we start reporting holes you know the exact area
2. can you make a button that repawns your character at the starting position, so when people fall they can just respawn...
3. mabe make the quit thingy work faster... it takes a very long time to quit, it looks like its frozen basically... so i just shrink and kill the program through task manager

LODs
Well a problem to fix the poly problem is using LODs, so the farther away you are form something, the less polys it has, and you cant see the diference  :)
If the engine dosent have this then mabe you should ask the CS team to make it or something.

If theres already LODs in the game, well, opps  :D

Oh, I definately enjoyed what I\'ve seen, which is exactly why I posted the issues-- because I want to help make it even better! I usually respond like this when I really have high hopes for the future of a new product. :) Also, keep it free!! It\'s one of the best things about PS that sets it apart.

That reminds me, will the server (+source) also be released?

Damn it lost my post due to a log in error... to cap it short.

my Specs AMD Atholon 1900xp, %12megs ram, Geforce3 64meg Titanium 200.

result... real smooth in 95% of the world...

lots of areas that polygons can be removed (the old player models being the major one) and lots of other places on teh world map... framerates should be up alot for teh next demo if im able to get the other modelers to follow my directions....

It would be nice to look with the mouse :) and maby some more skins in the next tech demo (expesialy the female diabolo :D)

But i\'m sure the PS team will solve them :D
