Numbers Please Has Anti Leet Speak idea
« on: July 14, 2004, 02:51:13 am »
I only want 4 numbers in my char name could you guys put a limit of numbers allowed like you must have at least 5 letters for only 4-5 numbers and the number have to be grouped as well to prevent the retarded leet speak

come one i really want these! just four insignificant numbers thats all its my name in all the games i play.

I definitely wish there was a strictly enforced nameing convention in PS. Not allowing numbers is important, but also I\'d simply _hate_ to see \"Legolas\" and \"Legolaz\" in PS. Obviously, one cannot always avoid naming conflicts with chars in books simply because there are so many and one won\'t even have read all the better known ones, not counting the nearly unknown ones. Still the influx of this kind of names right after some movie or book becomes really popular is annoying at best. So one should avoid this kind of names. Hell, sometimes I think \"I _really_ like this name, it\'s nifty!\" but then I still decide to not use it because I don\'t want to even look like just another copy of this char and I would find it dumb with others so why would I do it myself?
Of course this is unfair to the ppl. who _really_ can and do play Aragorn, but there surely is an Aragorn inflation that makes it all unpleasant, and if for nothing else than the repetition.
I don\'t require totally unique names or even selfmade ones (some ppl. just can\'t or don\'t like it), but I seek to exclude \"mainstream\" names. \"Ulysses\" is out and \"Nemo\" is as well, (not just the fish!), as is \"Tron\".

If your char\'s name happens to become mainstream by some miracle, obviously it\'s not anybody\'s fault but I\'d hate to be in that position myself. However, this kind of occurence should be rare. I\'d probably ask a dev to change my name in this case, but that\'s just me.

Adding numbers will just cause it so people too lazy to think up a creative name will just slap some numbers on their name of choice.  Like Seytra mentioned, there are some popular names that people generally move towards, and if you had two players on your contact list say Legolas1324 and Legolas1243 , it would be really annoying.  Besides, limiting it to just numbers and only a set amount / location does not limit leet.

Eg.) Char name of uber1337 .  Fits your naming convention fine :P.  And I\'m sure those more versed in leet speak could give you thousands of more examples.

Heh, I havn\'t had an original name in a game in some time.  If  people had any knowledge of English history, they would know this.

Obviously you are referring to Lord Melbourne, the Whig who has been the mentor of Queen Victoria. do I get the prize? ;)

If a movie that became _really_ popular would star this guy in a way appealing to the causal RPer, you\'d notice an influx of chars nemed like him.

I\'ve always either come up with orignal names or took less common names in history or changed some. I\'ve also used names of game developers from credits, often japanese.
Names I\'ve used include. Van, Vanguarde, Devereau, Zev, Raiyesi, Detan, Endo, Katase, Vix, Lukas, Luca (Very very common name I know but my name is luke I had to use it at least once :) ). I mean I cna tihnk of prob 20 more but I don\'t really feel like giving away all my names for peopel to use. But hey if anyoen needs help with making  a name have someone make a name suggestion page and have alist of many names from A-Z and have variations of the same name such as Mike, Mika, Miku. or even names that sound the same but have different letters. Van, Vaan, Vaen. And you can\'t worry about names looking the same. I eman I see this everyday \"I know at least 12 lukes\" and it doesn\'t bother me any. So even if a name sounds the same as another its alright. And it\'s not as if there are combinations of Legolas names. And I\'m sure people who play PS and stay for long aren\'t gonna be the type who are onoriginal and just want to play and beat it. There is nothing to beat lol.
But hey why not have the Devs do what FFXI did. Random names to pick from. Some were quirky but I got some pretty cool names out of those random generated ones. All you need to do is get a guy (Like myself ;) ) to come up with ALOT of names and but them in a name database and when someone uses that name it\'s taken deleted form the random names database.
Oh well guess thats sort of farfecthed but I tried.

Argh! None of these names is IMO suitable for fantasy RPGs. Most names that are composed from english (or any other well-known language) words aren\'t, simply because they are so widely understood. I mean, in medieval times, \"dark soldier\" might have been a descriptive \"surname\", but definitely no mother was going to call her child that... Numbers in names are reserved for dark future settings.
Sorry, but names like that are really annoying for RP purposes. This is why I wish for a strictly enforced naming code. They would be OK for StarCraft or C&C, or HL, but not for any serious fantasy game.

One should have the option to use a suffix (like \"the dark\" or whatever), but _only_ after applying for it and if it fits the RP aspect of one\'s char. It\'s the reputation / history of the person that creates suffixes like this, not the one it is assigned to, so maybe others can apply to have a suffix attached to one\'s name or have it changed. This would be more realistic.

Guess it was too easy for you.  Find me once CB comes out and I\'ll give you some tria, I prolly won\'t* be using Melbourne then though so you\'ll have to think.

It is when you exchange numbers and symbols for letters.  Like putting a \"3\" instead of an \"E.\" There\'s other stuff but thats the basic.

*Edit:  Silly me I wanted this to be a negative.

Yeah, and the sudden overambundance of chaotic good drow. Makes me want to play _evil_ drow just to give them back some of their reputation. ;)
