Well it\'s real realistic cuz if you yell while waiting for the door to fall the monsters behind it will attack.

Yup, I play D&D everyonce in a while.  Not currently in a campaign for D&D, but I\'ve been playing some D20 Modern on forums which is pretty cool, as well as a live game of  Mutants & Masterminds (superhero setting) which I also enjoy.

While I haven\'t played 2nd Ed (started on 3rd), I\'ve heard the reverse with every GM i\'ve played under ;)

D&D :D
I actually started playing almost 20 years ago and still have all of my 1st edition books and boxes for D&D and AD&D. (Have a few original AD&D books first print still in real good shape too)
Stopped playing about 5 years ago when we created our own version of D&D and programmed it all into VB. We\'ve been running the same campaign now non stop for that whole time but unfortunatley we hardly ever play. When your whole group gets married or moves out of town it\'s hard to get the game sessions together.

ald, you must have had a terrible DM. you see, a dm sets the scene, yes, a shield is automatically figured into your AC. also, the DM has the option of giving you a reflex throw to catch the arrow in the shield. but a good DM would give you the situation in combat, say an attack misses you but just barely, the DM could have said that you catch the arrow in your shield, enough arrows caught that way might slow you down a bit. removing the arrow could take you a move equivelant action, in which time you lose the ac from your shield, which presses you to keep up the attack, even though you\'re taking more arrows.

see ald, even with the rules, the DM is what makes the game. however, there\'s another secret, the DM has the power to take the rules, and throw them out the window.  The DM uses the rules to his own discretion, it even says so right in the DMG

They are a bit complicated...that\'s why there are dozens of manuals for each game...It\'s not like I could really post instructions on a forum...But basically, you set up a group of people, you really need at least 5: 4 players and one GM/DM, the person who creates the world and designates what the npcs do. You make your characters based upon the rules the dm gives, and you go through whatever storyline the dm makes. You gain levels in your class and advance in skills...This is all really vague because there are a lot of different playing styles and rule sets. Some players act out what they do, while others just tell. Some people play more of a straightfoward game going stricly by the rules. Others prefer to play their characters as realistically as they can...It\'s all just about the dm mostly. Dm makes the game. D&D is the worst game ever made if you have a poor dm, best ever if you have a good one...I still have a problem with many of the rules, however...

DnD is brokent. 3 and 3.5 are anyway. Stupid magic! Too much!

Anywho, yeah I play I like to play it\'s great fun. Thinking of playing Vampires the Masquerade, or a Modified version of Shadow run.

Anyway, I haven\'t had time lately to play...

Well you can use a board or chart paper etc. if you want to keep track of your characters positions and such, but its not necessary.  But no, you do not write all the time, all that you write down is your character sheet which keeps track of your stats, hit points, inventory, skills, etc.
You declare your action to the game master, and if there is some sort of action or skill involved you roll appropriate dice (then add/subtract any bonuses you have to that skill) to determine if you succeed, how much damage you do, etc.

Basically it in a nutshell, I\'d have to explain some rules to get more indepth ;).  It doesnt take that long to learn the rules either, especially if you have someone experienced as the game master. :)

D&D.. Whew. That\'s one sucky p&p.

Play Runequest, Rolemaster, Cyberpunk or Vampire/Werewolf/other that kind of more advanced stuff instead.

D&D is collection of stupidity. Book doesn\'t have to have charts about everything. DM decides most of the thing after all. D&D is so full of useless monsters and stupid rules that it is basically uselss p&p.

why does everyone confuse textbase with pen and paper...

there\'s not that much writing involved in it. yes you have to have numbers, but rules are only to keep it from being like kids games... anyone remember cowboys and indians or spaceman...

\"I shot you, you\'re dead\" \"no I\'m not, you missed!\"

rules give you the ability to prove whether you were shot or missed in said situation. you roll the dice to see if your attack was high enough to hit the other person. with a good DM, the only time you have to even look in the book is when you level up your character. depending on the situation of the game, that might be three or four game sessions apart
