Contracts
« on: July 21, 2004, 06:21:07 pm »
Yes i know, there are many topics about contracts, but hear me out, this one is different. (or atleast the SEARCH button didnt give me anything)

I have read in other posts that the game may have books that can be writen ingame. So i thought, if we can have books why cant we have contracts...

Now these contracts that i was thinking off will have 2 \"modes\", i say this for lack of a better word. Both of thse \"modes\" will be able to be checked by both (or in some cases many) players that are signing the contract.

The first side is the writen one, this is the part that is writen by the player him self. This part will include all the specific details and such things.

The second part will be the \"coded\" part, this can also be viewed by both players. This part will made by sellecting things in dropdown menues (or filled in). These menues will include things like the date that the contract will start and the date that the contract will end (IRL, will be converted depending on the viewers time zone.)

Also in your chars profile, or info, im not quite sure what CB will have... But if posible you could enter the \"contracts\" area of the proff. This will include the public contracts, that could be viewed by anyone, and the secret contracts, that can only be viewed by the people who signed them. The contracts that have expired will be marked with an \"X\".

The one thing that i could not figure out, is what would happen if the rules of the contract were not followed by a player, i guess they could report it to a GM?

Q: How many Planeshifters does it take to expalin a simple concept to a newb?
A: Six. Five to argue on who\'s explanation is right, and Moogie to lock the thread.

Well, the only reason why contracts work in our world is because we have laws that say when people sign something, they must follow it. There is no such thing in PS, and if someone was to break a contract, who would care? It would be your loss or someone else\'s loss. They would care, and they would send hoards of people after you. That\'s how things work. :)

If you cannot be trusted when doing business deals, you get a bad reputation, and that kind of bad reputation spreads very easily. No need for contracts at all.

Of course it might pay off to get a piece of paper with written information on what exactly the deal is all about, but don\'t expect any ingame laws to enforce your paper. Papers can be faked, and it is much easier to fake papers when magic is around. :)

I personally, would love to have contracts...sure, if you focus on the bad side of things (like, hey, it might stop this person from screwing me over) it might not be as good...but think how useful this will be for someone who actually does it.

I don\'t think if their broken the person should necessarily be punished for it (at least not out-of-game, sure if in an RP way) but sure, if their KEPT they are able to prove that you, are in fact, true to your word and makes you more trustworthy...which can prove to be very, very useful.

Contracts are good, it will bring in a trust factor an force us to keep our word! If there was a way to prove someone broke the contract and have them punished then a majority of this community would become more trust worthy or just not sign contracts ever :P

When you go to sign your contract you should have your own imported signature to make it your unique stamp!

Hmm, very interesting, the only punishment I could think of is an experience penalty, or a temporary negative experience modifier when you fight. This can be attributed to perhaps the \"magic\" binding law of the contract itself.

Many interesting things can be attrributed to a magic law of sorts.

I would support in-game only penalties -> you could bring a broken contract before a judge of some sort, have an argument, maybe even settle it over a duel.

I think its a great idea, and Im sure the devs could impliment penalties for breaking contracts, or in some cases it could be impossible to break contracts. For example, if two players sign a contract vowing not to enter into each other\'s house. If you tried to enter the other person\'s house, the game would remind you that you cant go in there, you signed a contract.
