Taking up Photography

Hey guys, I\'m hoping to take photography classes for my freshman year at college and I\'m just wondering if anyone has experience in photography. More so experience with conventional cameras, not digital cameras.

And can anyone tell if the camera I\'m using is a good camera:

A 1979 35mm single-lens reflex, aperture-priority automatic Nikon EM
-Shutter: Electronically controlled, vertical-travel, metal focal-plane shutter; stepless speeds from 1 sec. to 1/1000 sec. when shutter operation mode selector is set to AUTO; 1/90 sec. mechanical shutter speed when set to M90; B setting also provided for long exposures.

1 its dated 2 its not digital... :D
seriously though I dont know that much about photagrapgy and cameras/lenses but with technology the way it is you could get a much better camera today...

you know a lot professional photographers don\'t use digital cameras right? Mostly because they can control the light, shutter speed, and other technical problems. Whereas digital camera (yes you might get a sharper image, but its pixilated), and you can\'t control as many specific options.

Oh I found out the Nikon 1979 EM was only made for 2 years and then they discontinued it, so its a rare camera. (Not that it means anything though.)

I wasn\'t talking about switching to a digital cause it is better I was talking about getting a new camera however. The newer ones will give you more presice control and better overall performance...
The digital bit was a joke cause Ima techie...

That camera will do fine... like you I don\'t bother with digital. and Nikon makes the best cameras :D

Ok first off ANY camera is good for photography as long as your grabbing the right shot any camera is good! My sister took a picture of a house on fire a few years back and had it turned in black and white some calendar company gave her three hundred dollars just for that shot and she was using a old freaking ancient camera she bought at a garage sale!

It really does depend what your photographing!
I can\'t take a quality picture of a hummingbird with a bad 35mm. Plus lenses make all the difference, shutter speed etc. etc.
Seeing as your sister was taking a picture of a house, and I\'m confidentthe house wasn\'t moving, the picture probably turned out great! But I would want to photograph things like nature with certain cameras.
And get out! Did a calendar company really pay your sister 300 bucks for a picture at a garage sale??!!

my cuz is a photographer he works for a newspaper and he uses digital cams, maby casue he can load the images faster and get them in print.

But i know Whack about cams so imo you should ask your teacher about it

That camera sounds pretty good to me... if you are doing landscape you will want to take advantage of the bulb mode. by stopping down to, say, f22 and doing a 2 minute exposure you get great depth of field... Of course, you can do a lot of printing wizardry in the darkroom as well, burn/dodge and all that. I just did a(nother) week of photo class and it was fun. I usually use a Pentax ZX-7 (fully auto for grabbing action shots, fully manual for landscape) with a 28-80 mm lens, though I often wish for an extreme telephoto in some situations and an extreme wide angle in others :P I\'ve also shot some with my dad\'s old Rolleicord (120 size film) camera but it has some timing problems now and a sticky shutter :(

Hehe I didn\'t know there was so much to taking pictures, cameras...shutter blah blahs..

All I know is that the focus of the picture should be in the center of the picture. And the WHOLE object. (You don\'t cut off someone\'s legs if you were to take a picture of him/her...or put the person to the side)

Also, you should have light behind you, not in front of you. I\'ve had freaky experiences with that :D

And btw, why do photographers care about camera speed...isn\'t your subject supposed to stand still? ::rolls eyes::

Hmm, I also like that you aren\'t into the digital thing, it takes alot of money to buy a good digital camera with alot of megapixels. Which though with Nikkon you\'re still getting the best, unless you\'re into fujitsu (which I\'m a little impartial to because of their crappy battery life).

The thing with digital cameras is just that they\'re not into the control thing, things like double exposure, shutter speed and such that were talked about are a bit impossible. The best things you could do is emulate it with photoshop, which really unless you\'re seasoned with PS, its going to come out a little artificial.

personally, I don\'t think you could capture the same shot with a digital camera, as with a photograph, its a totally different type of camera, and well depends on what you want.
