A Democratic Development Process
« on: July 31, 2004, 11:06:17 pm »
Since the game is an open, free game, it seems possible for the devs to create the game according to the will of the players. If I am not mistaken, most innovative ideas (in traditional MMORPG\'s) are stifled by those who profit from the game and do not want to jeoparize their income.

Perhaps once or twice a month, after the game is released, players can be asked to vote on certain ideas for future development. This can be a list of \"What do you want most\" items, or a list of 10-20 ideas that players can rank. The devs can then take this information and determine what it is that the game\'s community would like to see, thereby making sure at least a majority of players are happy with the ideas.

So this is your whole point? That the devs didn\'t make a game that immediately works? Any you\'d vote to change that, I presume...

Well, the entire thing is a bad idea, because the devs are not our slaves. They do it in their spare time, for free and are nice enough to let you have it for free. None of us has _any_ right to make the devs do anything. If they do, fine, if not, tough. That\'s it. Just because PS is \"free and open\" doesn\'t give you any power to influence it unless you yourself join the dev team and actually contribute some hard work. All we can (and should be able to) do is to make proposals that the devs can use or ignore or change at their sole discretion.

So if there is a \"vote\" we are going to take, the things being voted on need to be what the devs want and not what we want, if these things differ.

Therefore, the wishlist forum is way better IMO, because it allows for discussion and reasoning, which a vote does not.

I hope the devs will never ever let us decide they need to do stuff that they don\'t really want to do, because then there would be no real incentive for them to continue, because they don\'t get anything off it anymore. These things are left to commercial games where the devs are paid and therefore don\'t really care if they are developing an MMORPG or a tax calculation program.

But you\'re in good company there, because many ppl. think that the GPL is taking away their rights to steal the work of others or gives them the right to make others do what they want.

The devs don\'t work for you.
The devs are not obliged to give you anything.
If you want something that they don\'t want, do it yourself or pay someone to do it.
If you want to steal their work, die.

Sorry, I hate this attitude.

Hah, you\'re really uptight.

I was suggesting this to be an organized way for them to know what the majority of people want to see so that people will continue playing their game. I\'m not saying its binding for them, I\'m saying that its a way for the devs to know how the players feel about future game additions. This would be HELPFUL to the devs, not restricting.

\"Ah\'ll ask him, but ah don\'t think he\'ll be verah keeen...\"
\"Why\'s That?\"
\"Well, \'e\'s allready got one, you see?\"

(Couldn\'t resist Monty Python Quote...)

Well, we have one of those. It\'s called the wish-list :P

in progressing levels of \"clearness\", nightwolfz, Syzerian, and Seytra have pointed this out to you. Now I will as well.  As for getting the majority\'s opinion, somehow I think that wouldn\'t work very well.  Most people in the Majority don\'t know what has already been implemented in the CVS version. So if that system was instated now, we\'d have 10^4356 people saying  \"I th1nk t3h d3vs sh0u1d 1mp13m3n7 c0/\\/\\B47z0rz!!\". They don\'t know that combat, and many other things, have been implemented in the CVS version which will become CB. I suppose that every so often, someone can harvest all the good ideas and link them from a thread to assist the devs in wading through this cluttered forum...
