Alternative Rock

Now, I consider myself a somewhat musical guy, but I have a sort of embarressing question:

Whats alternative rock?

I see so many references to \"alternative rock\". Well, what is it and what makes it so alternative? How is it different as compared to just \"rock\"?

Is pretty much a catch all term for bands that arent like mainstream music. It spans quite a few genres - Indy, punk, grunge, industrial, hardcore and goth rock.

And what would mainstream music be? Because most of the music that seems mainstream right now is considered \"alternative rock\" :P

I think the \"alternative rock\" movement was distinguished from \"classic rock\" as well as some of the pop music of the eighties.  When alternative became mainstream, the name stuck.

It\'s about what dfryer said Its the movement from 80\'s rock to grunge and the name kinda stuck to the newer bands that came
