rumors, searches, and postings.
« on: August 02, 2004, 05:41:57 pm »
For months I have searched the forum to confirm the release rumors I have heard.  However I seldom get any relevant results.  Keywords used always include:
?crystal blue?
?crystal blue? release
And of course whatever specifics from the latest rumor are.
As the information I am looking for needs to be relatively recent or be useless I use the post date filter.

I often receive a list of 12 or so threads, most of which have topics containing nothing remotely to do with the search.  Upon reading the entire thread I will find the search terms and a significant lack of relevance to actually disproving or supporting the rumor.  I continue down the list of non-associated topics finding some interesting things, lots of ego, and occasional reference to but no actual info about CB.

The closest I get is usually someone complaining about someone posting a question about when the release will be and the associated flames about searching instead of posting.
When I do find actual information regarding the rumor and/or release the topic usually has nothing to do with such things.

Since I obviously am performing some error in my searching or I would find exactly what I am seeking, what keywords should I be using?

And while I am here, before the flaming starts;
I understand that the rumors are unreliable; this would be why I am researching them.
I understand that when it is released they will announce it; But as the official news will be after the fact I am hoping to be able to plan ahead.
I understand that there are ?many topics already on the subject? of release, and that new ones will be deleted.  Those topics have no new information, that is the posts are months old.  At least the ones I find are and contain nothing more than the ?it will be released when it is released? mantra.  That is why this topic isn?t about the release date.  In fact should you post the release date here it would be off topic.
I understand that in lack of actual information people read things into comments and make stuff up because they are lame; the topic isn?t ?why do people spread rumors? nor ?why people wish to believe them?

The topic for those who missed it is the rumors of the release date.
IE.
?How to use this forum to find information to confirm or deny the current rumor.?
?Why when there is no actual information do these rumors continue to get posted in game yet nothing remotely about them is found in the forums??

Thanks,

Parts

Use the search string:

Code: [Select]
when its ready

and select \'match exact phrase\' then click Search.

It\'ll get you the most accurate information on the release date.
The all new: bounce-gaming.net

The truth is, there is nothing but rumors, and the fact that there is no release date :D

More info is available at http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/planeshift/planeshift/docs/history.txt?rev=1.1797&view=auto Try running it through translator from coding terminology to user-speak :)

The reason you will not find a lot of useful information about this is that even we (the devs) don\'t know when CB will be released. So we couldn\'t even tell you if we wanted. It will be released when it is ready. We don\'t know when it is ready. We are testing and during testing bugs tend to pop up all the time.

Pop up all the time... I just had an odd vision of \"whack a mole\" played with bugs in the source :P

You can play CB all you want if you run your own server and compile yourself ;) Most people, however, don\'t want to do this so I guess you have to wait for the official, nicely packaged, release :P On the other hand, you could compile it and help the devs find bugs if you figured out how (I would but Windows doesn\'t like dual boots and now I have to restore the boot record to get back into gentoo...)

edit: I am tripel-as now. woo hoo. Shower me with gifts and money :P okay, it doesn\'t matter.

Parts; Very cute, except I didn\'t ask for the release date.
josephoenix:I know they are just rumors, hence the topic, and  I didn\'t ask for the release date.
jorrit; I appreciate your, and other\'s hard work, thank you very much.  I greatly look forward to it.  Even your quote  of me specifically asks about the rumors, and I didn\'t ask for the release date.
josephoenix; I don\'t run my own server because, A: my linux box is currently a fulltime NWNhost and B: be kinda dull with just 2 people in the Planeshift world.
Please forgive my bluntness but either I was to vague in my question or y\'all seem to have misunderstood it.

The question is about the rumors not the release date.

first; I would like suggestions on the most efficient search criteria to investigate, that is disprove, the current rumor.

and 2; Why shout \"release is saturday!\" when \"fragnetics has the new server set!  the release must be Saturday.\" at least actually uses info from the forums.

P.S.  um, I would  just like to take this time to point out that you all fell for my trap and only my posts here are actually on topic.  \"wohoo I rule!\"
geez I am lame.

AFAIC Rumors are guilty until proven innocent. That is, you should consider them nothing but fluff coming from someone who misread the main page, until/unless you see something that proves otherwise.  That something would be, most likely, found in a stickied topic, on the main page, or in the cvs history whose link I posted.  Chances are that there wouldn\'t be anything except further rumors and posts discounting rumors if you search.

That\'s what this is all about!  I am trying to get suggestions to aid in the disproving of these rumors.
Perhaps it is why someone would do this that is confusing,
I am attempting to do this because I get very tired of the following conversation;
\"CB is coming out on weds night! \"
\"really, where you hear this?\"
\"everyone is saying it.\"
\"yeah, but what is their source?\"
\"It\'s all over the forum.\"
(go to forum and search, get 14 or 15 threads with 5-20 posts each, nothing having anything to do with reason for search, search more, find nothing, eventually search all recent messages.  Find vague mention of server being ready. )
next morning;
\"um, nothing about it on the forum.\"
\"you must have just missed it.\"
\"arrgh.\"

I would like to reduce the amount of search time, and discuss the whole rumoredness.

Sorry, forgot to say, \"Way to go! your on topic!\"
(unless of course I wanted it in it\'s own message. hmm)

I, for one, haven\'t heard anyone say they heard it on the forum, mostly they claim developers were dropping hints in IRC or they refuse to reveal their source. I suppose you could speed it up by searching on the usernames of all the active developers, anything not posted by the developers or moderators is most likely nonsense. *yawn* You probably shouldn\'t go around trying to prove rumors... Waste of time.

I agree with josePhoenix 100%...trying to disprove rumors through searches on old posts and hunting down devs and administrators\' comments in the forums are a complete waste of time.  Instead, you should focus on the fact that the next release, CB, is in its testing phase...meaning it is pretty close.

Notice I said, \"pretty close\"...anyone who has read about or been involved in software development knows the testing phase ends up taking the longest amount of time.  The devs are trying to tackle every conceiveable bug related to the server, client, gameplay...you name it.  The testing phase can be a nightmare, so rest assured they are working hard to release CB, and try not to pay attention to gossip thrown around in-game.

Search posts, not threads. I always get much better results when I do that.
