Assassins, what are they good for?
« on: August 10, 2004, 10:37:13 am »
As per ususal.. I did a search before making this thread.. so please don\'t flame me if I missed something.
I was thinking back to people\'s threads about what class they will model after, and what jobs they wanted and I came across something that made no sense to me.
ASSASSINS!
In a game such as this is projected to become... what use will assassins be?
EXAMPLE:
The Merchant RichGuy hires notorious assassin KillerGuy to kill ruthless guild leader BadGuy... KillerGuy stealthily kills BadGuy... BadGuy respawns and brings an entire guild after both KillerGuy and RichGuy if he finds out who hired KillerGuy. KillerGuy and RichGuy then respawn and either kill BadGuy again or do nothing.... Achieving precisely NOTHING!

IMO Assassins will be useless... they will never actually successfully complete a contract as the target will always respawn / be resurrected or whatever. I welcome your thoughts on the matter

I don\'t think that assassins will be useless in PS. think about quests where you have to kill sbdy! sure you can set up a whole army and storm the place, but maybe it will be easier for just an assassine to sneak in, kill the certain person quietly and sneak back out... as it is for killing non NPCs i guess you are more or less right. besides the fact that the victim may have to pass some death realm, hence there is a certain amount of time until the person is seen in our world again...
Don\'t Panic!
(and never forget your towel!!!)

Assassins sneak around an opponent to stab them in the back gaining a critical strike bonus as their main advantage. Not to mention their awesome dodging skills and such.
Although because of the way pvp is being handled your going to have to use this tactic on monsters

Yeah, an assassin will be great in a group if you\'re fighting a really hard opponent. He\'d be able to get in the first hit, doing quite a bit of damage, and causing enough distraction to give the other guys time to get close/cast spells etc.

if you are an assassin they shouldn\'t be able to find out who you are hired by, so then you would go kill badguy, and steal his money.bring it back to richguy who gives you an award and part ways, badguy is death for some time he lost some money and his guild is left without a leader for some time.

I would think \"Assasins\" in guilds would come in useful in guildwars, skirting the edge of the battlefield to take down leaders or somesuch. Of course, assasins would be most useful during guildwars, because of the free PvP.  That way an Assasin would be able to strike from the shadows, etc.

Still, assasinations (proper ones) should be a joint RPing collaboration between the client, the victim, and the assasin. An assasination is an excellent way to go out with a bang, so to speak. Say I\'m tired of playing my Alchemist. I agree OOCly to have him assasinated in some huge dramatic way, thus increasing the RP value of PS.

On the other hand, if people drop items when they died, assasins would be VERY useful.

And if there was open PvP, which there isn\'t.

Meh Assasin\'s are useful or rather they would be useful especially if they had a cloaking system where they could take a swing at the enemy, stop moving and they would be cloaked invisible ^^ But I expect  that won\'t happen

I see it like this.

A profession assassin uses a stealth mode and
slowly but patiently creeps by the guards of a town.
His mission is to kill a player named Joe to
recieve a reward from a player named Shmo.
With sweat on his forehead he slowly reaches the
victims house, getting ready to come out of stealth
mode he knocks on the door..

Meanwhile, Joe, the victim, is staying at home.
It\'s dark outside, so instead of going out of town, he
wisely decides to stay at home and work on his crafting
skills.  After spending few hours macroing the skill, all
tired and annoyed after failing to craft another vase, he
hears a soft knock on the door.  Puzzled
he goes to open the door. He turns the handle, and
SUDDENLY, a body appears with a knife ready to slash
his throat, and then a messege pops up.
\"Would you like to accept a challenge from AssassinExpert? \" Yes or No
Joe clicks No and closes the door.

Yet another failed attempt for AssassinExpert, he won\'t
be getting a reward tonight.. Ah maybe another time
:)

hahaha sashok20, great post.
As far as I know CB won\'t have free pvp, it will have the possibility to duel if both parties agree. Maybe assassination missions will have more use in a post-cb update, but who knows? Cb isn\'t out yet so we can\'t really say much...

:) thanx

Yeah, free pvp won\'t happen and maybe for good reasons too.  Of course professions such as assassins
and mercs will somewhat suffer since the only missions
they could be hired for is assassinate some npc or
protect a player from monsters etc.

p.s. just had some idea for pvp in my head, shouldn\'t
be in this post but here goes.. How about pvp be free
at night hours. So basically stealing and pking is allowed
at night for duration of about 5 minutes of real time,
while morning and day will last for about 30 minutes
and be completely no pvp.
This will make all who want pvp roam teh streets at night, while rest stay home and enjoy the 5 minute break

well assassins are quite weak in terms of defense and limited weapon choices. Because they have to move fast which means really light armor and have to attack quickly which requires light weapons that don\'t take a lot of weight. So they make up in their stealth and speed.
My name is NOT pronounced, \"Kway-per,\" it\'s pronounced \"Kye-per.\"

Thats pointless in PvP because, i believe it was jorrit, said if you\'re going to attack a player, the other player, must accept and acknowlegde to the fight.  real point to stealth there!
