For discussion purposes, the forums are english oriented.  Some people have trouble connecting because of firewalls, because they wait too long to connect, or because they don\'t understand how long they have to wait to initialize the world.

Well, they wouldn\'t be able to read this as it looks to you. If you, however, install the cyrillic charset, it\'ll suddenly turn into symbols that you might recognise. This is why I strongly advise to allow only the english alphabet in names: most ppl. will simply not have the appropriate charset installed and therefore only see junk, let alone be able to type or even understand what sound the char represents. The english alphabet, however, is the smallest subset of all similar alphabets and also it does come with any computer AFAIK, therefore it should be available to everyone. And I don\'t think the NSCs will speak русско anyway...

That\'s not nice and I don\'t think a lot of people know about the \"English-only\" rule.

Making a separate forum would IMHO be fine, too. While pretty much everybody playing PS has some sort of English knowledge, it doesn\'t mean they can readily understand all of the information on the forums...

The game is English. The PS website is English. This forum is all English. Therefore, I would expect someone capable of downloading and navigating this English game to communicate his problem to us in, you guessed it, English.

It\'s whose choice? The devs\' choice it is, indeed.
While UTF-8 can display the stuff, can your keyboard type it? Do you even know where on the keyboard you use the appropriate symbols would be found, assuming PS came with an appropriate keymap pre-installed? And how about chinese? How many key combos do you wish to press before you can type a foreign character just so you can type in the name of the person who insisted on having a name consisting of russian, chinese and umlauts? No way, that\'s even worse than allowing 1337 and numbers in names.

Also, Mogura most likely didn\'t see russian, but junk (maybe wouldn\'t even recognize it as russian even if it displayed correctly; you can\'t assume this knowledge). What you see depends on your browser, operating system, font selected and keymaps installed. For me, it displays as accented characters that you find in french, but it certainly isn\'t readable and not even remotely similar to russian. Therefore, Mogura had to assume that it was just some SPAM with junk in it that indeed would warrant immediate deletion. I think this is pretty obvious, but maybe it\'s just my painful experiences with foreign languages and computers that give these insights...

Just as an example: would you not delete a post in 1337? Like

I would, even though it _could_ be read and is even somewhat friendly. I hope that this illustrates my reasons to dislike non-english characters.

Edit: Also, as Mogura beat me to the post, I second that, even though I\'m not english, the game and everything related to it is english and therefore, unless you create a local server you need to speak english so ppl. will understand you. And, as Mogura said, if you can get to download the game, you surely can formulate at least some basic intellegible sentence like: \"Help! Planeshift linkdead! (sorry, not english speaker)\"!

Well there are distributions of PS in other languages, and there are also different channels on irc for non-english speakers, so why not forums?

Perhaps more info should be on the site to help non-English speakers.

Please remember that the project head is himself Italian, so if he saw this as a necessity it would already be a part of the forum. It isn\'t, and PS has been around for a loooong time, so...

I guess the problem is that you would have to find <*Insert-Language*> speaking moderators & someone to translate part if not all into another language & they are just to lazy atm, & If I spoke something other then English, I would like a forum for non-English-my-language players?
