Please dont listen to these totally unfounded rumours, both versions of the game will be ready for release. Almost all platform-specific problems are eliminated and most of the bugs remaining are common to both linux and windows. Also note that the windows installer is complete, work is going on for a linux installer. The release will be for all supported platforms, otherwise we wouldnt release it.

Also, windows isnt the standard for everything to do with computing, quite a few people use linux. I myself use it, and many of my friends who program regularly do too. It isnt the best consumer-grade operating system but it can be nice if you have the right skills. I recommend people try it to see if they like it, and if not they can go back to windows.

Either way, players will not be advantaged depending on their operating system, their connection bandwidth and latency, or their geographical position. The game will attempt to cater the same for most people who play modern games.

Your comments are always interesting, and the team has a good number of open-source programmers, but I would say that were mostly balanced between windows and linux programmers. Either way, dont go installing linux if all you want is to play planeshift, because Tok\'ra was wrong in stating that it was a linux project, it is multi-platform and no official release will be out only for a specific operating system.

I too like the Matzeb\'s diary and think it should continue as long as possible through these demos so we can pay attention on what is happening in planeshift.

On another note, the server is looking more and more stable, and there is also a script in place to automatically restart it after any crash. Note that it hasnt been tested with many more than 3-5 players, and the server could easily go down occaisonally due to a crash or upgrade.

The demo will probably be coming soon, hopefully after we can at least get a decent bit more testing into it and fix more bugs. Until then, I hope you will stick with this project and wait it through till the end. This is only the first step in a huge project.

The crystal space engine is licensed under the LGPL, but the \'Material\' referred too is only specific to whatever covered under our license, which is currently graphics, maps, sprites, rules, ideas and audio. This is done just to protect the originality of the project, and it will be clearly explained in the releases the content released under that license. The source will always be released but only if you use it to produce a game of your own, without infringing on the ideas or content of the game. As MatzeB says, we can choose what parts of the project are licensed on the GPL and there are no requirements at all to open the sources because of our use of Crystal Space (since it is LGPL).

1. The magic system has not been started.

I agree, the only operating systems anyone use today are Windows, MacOS and Linux, in that order. The crystal space engine supports more platforms but there will not be a release of the actual game for them, unless you want to build one yourself.

As vengeance says, if you are an experianced coder and you want to port, feel free to join the team. But for now, dont expect it to run on anything besides Windows and Linux directly. The site is wrong in that we _support_ those platforms, as I have no idea how to offer support for AmigaOS users. :)

The demos are not the full game, they are for developers to test the game, balance skills and items, and add features. Its not likely we could run through all the demos without resetting. There are bound to be many bugs or exploits that could lead to cheating, character curruption or huge problems in these demos the server could be quite unstable too. If you dont want to loose your characters, or play a untested game then dont play the demos. There is no way we can gurantee they will not be lost.

The planeshift team owns both http://www.planeshift.it and http://www.planeshift3d.com but we are hosting the forums on a seperate server because the main one does not support mysql.

Granted or negated Wishes /

Yes, we have looked at many technologies that can do this, but we havent decided on anything to use yet. We will very likely use or create our own tool to generate dungeons, and place items in manually though, because there will be such large areas of this. Most of the game world, will be modelled in detailed though, and the maps that are already created look absolutely great.

Yes, but the trouble is that a game economy will never work if you can simply create (or obtain for free) your own raw materials, and build weapons. If there is unlimited sources of metals then there would be either a situation like in RuneScape where one or two people dominates, or a massive surge of powerful items, which would devalue everything in the game, for trading. If there were few finite or limited amounts of raw materials in mines, then eventually people will run out and weapons will become too rare. In my opinion, mining hasnt worked in RuneScape, so why fall for the same trap?

Im sure you may have fun, but im not really the one to talk to about this. Im not the guy who decides this stuff. You really should just play the game when its out, and decide then if you enjoy it and wish to play it regularly. We are sure that our game will be appealing to alot of roleplayers.

There wont be guild houses in the first demo, but its very likely it will be included later. I dont know why you are saying that Montenegro, but there has been nothing said about no smithing, cerpentry, or building. Trading will very much be an active and interesting part of this game. However, its unlikely mining will be part of this game because we do not want any boring or repetitive jobs that may detract from roleplay. Again, let me repeat, I personally am not the one saying this, I just heard that information from the project leader, Luca, and I already am sorry I \"posted that can of worms\". I didnt imagine the possible effect it would have, especailly since a large part of our fan base are ex-runescape players. I would like to appologise personally for anything I have said that may suggest that.

If other people are wondering what this is about, I posted before that mining may not be part of this game, and some people do not like this. I would now like to withdraw that statement. For your last statement montenegro, However technology changes within the next ten years, we are sure that the crystal space engine will adapt.

General Discussion / Questions about Demo Version
« on: February 19, 2002, 10:57:32 am »
The planeshift team is always working hard to produce this great game, and I thought that it would be a good idea, since the demo is being released soon, to ask if anyone had any questions about it. On the 18th of February, the following was posted on the main site.

Our team has grown, it\'s healthy and productive in all department.

Some news from our development team:
- Our server gurus had the first chat session in our PS client!
- We have modeled the plaza around the temple of Laanx, and we are working on houses and shops surrounding it
- We have now 3 good songs for the game. You will love them.
- Our setting team is working to define better the background history of all the races.
- We made an update to the overview of Ylikaum pages to have it more readable.

Some news about the demo. We are working hard to bring you the demo as fast as possible, but it\'s important to clarify some key points about it:
- That demo will be basically a technology demo, we will show some of the functions of the Crystal Space engine and of our server engine.
- The players will be able to look around and chat, but the combat system will not be there.
- The models, animations and textures are now VERY simple. That will enable us to test the performance of the game and then make proper models with higher polycount. That means that in the future releases you will see better models, don\'t be fooled by the ones in the demo.
- The server will be up/down for testing, so there will be no continuity of service.
- The characters that will be stored will be probably removed with next released of the demo.
- The world elements, such as houses, shops, etc... are placed only for testing purposes but will be probably moved/changed in future releases.

The actual target for the 1st demo is end of March.

If you have any additional questions please post them in this thread.
