General Discussion / Version 0.3.013 is on it's way

The new release is in progress, and more information will be posted when it\'s complete.

The new client is available via BitTorrent:

The server is being rebuilt right now, and after we\'re confident it\'s working properly, it\'ll be opened up for use.  The download servers and update servers are not yet ready.  Even if you want to use the updater to upgrade, you\'ll still have to redownload the maps and the new art, so you don\'t have to wait for the update servers if you\'re concerned about bandwidth.  (though, that will be the easiest method, when it\'s ready)

This isn\'t a request for help, per se, but a request for past help.  I\'m updating the stickies here, and I\'d like the various tech-helpers here to give me some... well... help.  :P  In addition to the list of standard trouble shooting tips I listed in the main sticky, can anyone think of any others?  Also, I\'m going to make a \"known fixes\" thread (or just ammend the main one), and I\'d like to compile the list here first.  (no one ever reads the long winding piles; I want it locked)  Here\'s what I can think of off the top of my head:

GeForce 2 or 4 issues:
Edit the file data/config/r3dopengl.cfg and add these lines:
Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_ARB_texture_rectangle = false
Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_NV_texture_rectangle = false

VFS errors:
Download correct vfs.dll (now recommended to be done via the updater1028.zip, in the updater sticky; however, this really only applies to people who download an old installer off of a P2P network, or something)

(I\'ve added the vertex buffer straight to the standard troubleshooting.)


Seeing as I can only think of these 3 at the moment, I\'d welcome some more ideas.  (only currently applicable issues, please; no old stuff needed)  Please read the latest versions of the main sticky and the updater sticky before commenting.

These tech help forums are for people to get help with common issues, mostly due to the individual peculiarities of people's systems and various known bugs.  A bug is not officially "known" until it is posted on BugTracker.  People who want to contribute to the game are highly encouraged to hunt for bugs and post them there.  (It's often more fun than actually playing the game ;) )  However, that being said, it should not be your first stop.  Please search here and on BugTracker before posting anything!  Use the advanced search ability to look for pre-existing bugs before posting.  Unreproducible bugs, bugs without enough information (that only you seem to get), and bugs that have a known fix will be closed without a second thought.  If we can't use the report to fix the problem, it's useless to us.  Please keep the clutter down.

Before using BugTracker, you must read the Guide to the BugTracker.

Main points:
  • Post ALL the info you can get.  That includes steps to recreate, screenshots, dumps, and backtraces if you can get them.
  • Checking the SVN history before posting to see if it has already been fixed, is often a good idea.
  • Really big bugs should be reported to someone on IRC in #planeshift on Freenode.
  • Please don't just assume a bug is "known".  Having you play the game on the test server does us no good if no one reports the bugs.
  • Do not, under any circumstances, post anything merely to the effect of "it doesn't work" or "the server is down".  BugTracker is NOT a place to get tech help, nor is it a place to report temporary issues.  Use the forums.

Ok... ran the updater... it tried to update itself... and now it crashes on load...  :rolleyes:  (both GUI and DOS modes)  Seeing as the torrent may be a bit slow, I\'d like to fix this and update the easy way.

If someone who knows vaguely what they\'re doing has a working updater, could they send me a copy?...  :P  Just yank everything in the root PS directory with the word \"update\" in it, zip it up, and send it to me via email.  (my address is in my forum profile, for the time being)

Ya know... torrents don\'t work without seeders...

I think I figured out how to fix the thing.  A few file access monitorings, some screwy stuff in config files, working directory errors... whatever...   :P  After much idiocy, it\'s now downloading.  :))

Um... there\'s too many idiots out there.  Demarthl posted a suggestion in the long winding dead server thread, and due to my extensive boredom, I\'m posting it here as well...  Set a minimum requirement to create a new thread.  It\'ll cut down drastically on the pollution here, and after reading my 40 bazillionth moron post, I think my head is going to explode...  :rolleyes:  (I can insult them all I want... they won\'t ever read this.  :D )

The rank \"Forum Member\" (50 posts) sounds like a good mark.  Might as well actually gain something with that \"membership\".  :P

Ok, GMs control the weather, they can teleport and cloak themselves... these are some cool powers...  My suggestion is this:  Make these into actual magic spells.  (just give GMs maxed ability, possibly with more control)  Granted, they would require the skill of a master mage, and should be very difficult to obtain and consume large amounts of MP/mental stamina.  But, it would be nice to have these sorts of things available to players.

Before I say anything, I must point out this is a question not a request.  I\'m just curious about the processes involved.  Please don\'t flame this like it\'s a newbie rant...

Many of the common bugs that are complained about in-game have already been fixed in the CVS.  Why has a patch not yet been released to fix these things?  If a solution has been found, why has it not been disseminated?  I can fully understand why you wouldn\'t release new stuff till it\'s working right, but why not fixes?

Things that are all true, but are not answers to my question:
1)  PlaneShift is a pre-alpha tech demo
2)  The devs are doing this all in their spare time
3)  It\'s free, don\'t complain about it
4)  Just compiling from the CVS would fix it
5)  Newbies complain too much
6)  PlaneShift is wonderful, don\'t insult the devs
7)  Good things come to those who wait

Or, am I reading into this too much, and there isn\'t really a reason at all?  In which case, the answer is simply \"just because we haven\'t\"...  :P

Development Deliberation / Adding an image to a window

I\'ve been making my own info and group windows.  You can see my progress in this thread here.  I created some new buttons for the group management functions, but as of yet I haven\'t figured out how to put them in.  I\'ve tried adding entries into imagelist.xml, but it won\'t load the images up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think the spawns could be made more realistic.  So here are a few ideas.

The sewers is full of pipes (and other holes could be added) so how about the rats spawn randomly out of those, then quickly scamper away and scatter.  It would at a bit more realism, and if the rats were constantly on the move things would not be as boring for the newbies.  To discourage camping, rats could be too \"afraid\" to spawn out of a hole that recently saw a few of their friends deaths.  Clackers could spawn in similar matter out of caves in the wilderness, and gobbles could spawn in pools of water.

Bandits could spawn at the already existing bandit camp on Oja road, and scatter out from there.  (an actual camp could be added)  Other monsters like tefus, rogues/thugs, trepors, and consumers could just spawn off away from people and wander towards them.  One way or another, I\'d like to get rid of instant teleportation-like spawning.
