General Discussion / Re: Frustrating Start
« Last post by Wiff77 on November 14, 2023, 10:52:39 am »
I went back in this morning and after another 25 minutes or so, I somehow stumbled upon the exit. It was so fast that I'm not sure what even happened, but I thought I was at a dead-end and suddenly I zoned out. I think every time I saw it before I turned around thinking there was nothing that way.

Honestly, if I wasn't so stubborn, I would have quit and uninstalled. You may want to reconsider making new players go through 2 mazes before they can do anything.

General Discussion / Frustrating Start
« Last post by Wiff77 on November 14, 2023, 09:50:37 am »
I saw a couple of videos on YouTube and decided to give the game a try. It looks very interesting and I liked the character creation and the character I made.

And then I was put in to a glowing space maze where I had to jump around like Mario and quickly find some portals before they close. I failed at this more than once, but after 20 minutes or so I stumbled my way through it...

Just to end up in another maze. I ran through caves for another 20 minutes, found several talking heads and then got lost and ended up back at the beginning. I tried several more times and could not find an exit. I quit and left my character there to die of starvation.

Seriously, I mean this with all due respect, as I do respect the work you've all put in to this, but this is just really frustrating. I have to think I'm not the only one that the double mazes has defeated.

I don't really understand why I wasn't put in the starting town like the people in the YouTube videos.  If there is a way to skip this, please let me know and I'll start a new character.

P.S. Making me read through the lore to find the color of the sun just to post on the forum?

Talad (Leader/Founder)
Eonwind (Rules)
Tuathanach (Rules)
Zunna (Rules/Settings)
Mordaan (Settings)
Venalan (Settings Lead)
Uadjet (GM Lead)
Emaline (GM Team)
Zweitholou (Art)
Gonger (PR)

Aachey:  Thosor?
Thosor:  The pet health window is huge, and can't change size. there are sizing arrows on bottom right that move as though resizing an invisible window.
Thosor:  Haven't checked flyspray yet.
Anysu:  Thank you Uadjet
Migg:  never received that confirmation e-mail, no matter how many times I tried
Anysu:  So like what if that happens other times.. only a GM can help you?
Thosor:  what mail? must have missed question during crash.
Aachey:  That, or /die.
Aachey:  When people see themselves as falling, others see them standing in the guildhall.
Migg:  when you try to create account on Flyspray, it says it will send you a confirmation e-mail or something
Anysu:  Those the only way?
Thosor:  I always fall in here but land on my feet.
Aachey:  That I can think of, yeah. Unless there's a way to force the cllient to re-calculate position.
Anysu:  not fun..eventhough do like idea of flying! But not so long! lol
Migg:  and that was Rawhide
Aachey:  As for the pet window... it is huge. Especially for those of us who play with a window so that we can quickly access notepad++ and a browser window.
Daevaorn:  Logging off / crashing out of the House of Power is not a good thing,.
Migg:  Daevaorn! nice name
Daevaorn:  Like last week I am dropping forever to the Deep. Still someone with TP permissions around to help me back to solid grounds?
Aachey:  The resizing arrow does just as you say: It resizes the invisible window, but not the part with actual content.
Daevaorn:  Thanks Migg.
Daevaorn:  Thanks, Aachey.
Aachey:  So, gobbles are building things, and players can help or hinder this should they choose to do so.
Aachey:  Oh, they can also reproduce and increase their nu mber, but to a limited degree.
Aachey:  Talad fixed the bug that allowed for infinite gobbles to spawn.
Aachey:  He thinks.
Aachey:  Hopefully.
Thosor:  All types? including the mean ones?
Aachey:  If not, I'll make and event of it.
Aachey:  Yes, even the mean ones.
Anysu:  I would hope there is a limit.. to small player base to check such growth.
Thosor:  Oh dear, mean campfires and huts...
Migg:  You bad!
Zrak:  hahaha
>Zrak claps for Migg.
Gonger:  Today we have for the first time I think in PSU more than just a few players online outside an event.
>Daevaorn nods in agreement with Gonger.
Anysu:  Nice
Zrak:  Even a former GM appeared online
Anysu:  I do not mind messing up Serpent gobble items
Thosor:  Met a returning player yesterday,
Migg:  I can't see Daevaorn...
Anysu:  Former GM..who?
Gonger:  Sarka?
Zrak:  Yes, Gonger
Migg:  Sorka
Anysu  nods
Zrak:  Not invisible in chat anyway
Gonger:  Sorka, yes. We also had Sarva at some point.
Anysu:  Neat
Aachey:  Ah, I didn't see Sarva.
Thosor:  He got unstuck, then got lost awhile.
Daevaorn:  [I might still be in the HoP instance. like last time this happened, Will fix it by going back there and entering again]
Migg:  pity /target doesn't work...
Anysu:  So what else do you have for news Gonger and Uadjet?
Aachey:  Just go out the door and back in. That'll fix it.
Daevaorn:  thx
Gonger:  I posted the Dev meeting in the forum.
Gonger:  The last one.
Aachey:  Wow. Lot's to go.
Gonger:  Hoping for some feedback about my ... heretic idea.
Daevaorn:  Better?
Thosor:  That;s good for those that doze off here.
Aachey:  Okay: More work has been done on factions. NPC's and Quests are being assigned to factions, for one thing. It's not too hard to do, but we've got quite a few NPCs kicking around, so it takes a while.
Aachey:  Talad and Tua are working on adding faction-exclusivity to some things, like merchants or equipment.
Aachey:  That means you'll need a certain faction level to  buy some items, or access a chest or shelf. Or a telescope.
Gonger:  The telescope with real view, now that would be something.
Aachey:  Darn. I didn't restart my client, so this all won't be logged.
Gonger:  I think I got it, Aachey.
Aachey:  Ah, thanks.
Gonger:  Yes, I have it.
Aachey:  Talad has also worked on a new window for GM's.
Gonger:  And what Aachey said: If you crash, fully close the client, otherwise logging will stop.
Anysu:  not sure about faction level and certain items...
Anysu:  you can or can't buy.
Aachey:  Basically, it will allow us to do what might have required several commands to do before, and do it in a GUI and not via text commands.
Zrak:  Nice feature!
Anysu:  Hmm can't see Uadjet now.
Thosor:  i do
Aachey:  Ah, the faction merchants might only sell valuable/rare items to people of a certain rank. Ranks will be determined by quests completed.
Zrak:  Aachey disappeared for me too, Anysu.
>Aachey waves.
Migg:  The invisible man...
Thosor:  now gone, just a torch
Zrak:  Now I see your torch only, Aachey
Anysu:  Well not going to relog in here to see him and fall again..
Anysu:  Only torch for me
>Daevaorn nods in agreement with Anysu.
Aachey:  Very odd...
Daevaorn:  Cursed grounds these houses, nowadays.
Aachey:  So once that window is implemented - and I think it's done - I'll be able to spawn enchanted items again.
Aachey:  I think they built the courthouse on top of an old gobble burial ground.
Daevaorn:  Maybe you are a polterguard, Aachey?
Daevaorn:  Swinging that torch around in mid-air.
Thosor:  getting smokey in here
Anysu:  Well at least I can see his text
Aachey:  Oh, and Talad fixed the /giveitem area command, which many of you probably didn't know was broken. That'll allow me to give out custom rewards to an entire group with one command. That's how I always gave out enchanted items in Legacy, as the "/event reward" can only give out standard items.
Daevaorn:  And is that were Talad put all the gobbles he needed to get rid of?
Daevaorn:  Buried under the courthouse?
Aachey:  Quite possibly.
Thosor:  the trouble with gobbles...
Aachey:  When the Octarch built the place, they moved the burial markers but didn't move the bodies.
Daevaorn:  But they aren't fluffy, Thosor!
Aachey:  That's why players keep getting pulled underground when they log in here.
Anysu:  The trouble with gobbles sounds like an event name
Thosor:  and don't purr
Daevaorn:  Anysu you might get sued by Paramount for that ^^
Anysu:  eeekk
Aachey:  The Trouble with Tlokes
Aachey:  Paramount seems to be self-destructing at the moment, so that might not be an issue.
Anysu  sighs in relief
>Anysu listens intently to Aachey.
Anysu:  What else?
Daevaorn  holds out his hand towards Thosor, fingers pointing to two sides split between middle and ring finger.
Aachey:  So the new window lets me make custom items, cut that includes making items that players can attack and destroy.
>Migg jumps around excitedly at Aachey.
Aachey:  So I'll be able to build things and then let you lot destroy them. :)
Thosor  shows undivided attention
Zrak:  New way to have fun here :-)
Aachey:  Barricades, altars, bridges...
Aachey:  I think it'll work on all item types, too.
Daevaorn:  That sounds like a tremendous RP potential indeed
Aachey:  I can also attach scripts to items. So that can mean trapped containers. Or traps on the ground, if they have area triggers.
Anysu  cheers and smashing things
>Anysu nods at Daevaorn.
Anysu:  will detect trps work by then also?
Anysu:  *detect traps and disarm them*
Aachey:  It should, yes.
Anysu:  cool
Daevaorn:  Are there plans to activate the related skills for the traps?
Aachey:  Find Traps is currently under Intelligence, actually.
Anysu  really wants to find and disarm traps
Daevaorn:  I am aware of that, and yet my character has some veeery old skill values of zero in Find Traps and Set Traps that I would like to see rise ;-)
Aachey:  You can normally activate it by right-clicking an item and choosing search for traps. Or disarm trap, if you've already found one.
Aachey:  Well, that may happen, I don't know.
Aachey:  I've added a few points as a reward for events, iirc.
Aachey:  I certainly remember filling Laanx's Dungeon with traps.
Aachey:  But I don't know if those skills are going to be activated later or not.
Daevaorn:  When I ran into traps in the Ash Brotherhood Lair and following that tried the ability, I repeatedly crashed the server. Is it supposed to work only with a targeted item that ability?
Aachey:  They could certainly help boost the chances of finding and disarming traps. It's quite hard, currently.
Aachey:  I think so. Detect Secrets doens't need a target, but I think Find Traps does. I'll test in the dungeon later.
Aachey:  Any other questions?
Thosor:  a few but will check flyspray first
Aachey:  In that case, I think we can bring the meeting toa close. Thank you all for coming, and I'll see you all at the next meeting in two weeks. Until then, have fun playing and maybe try attendig an event or two!
>Daevaorn thanks Aachey!
>Daevaorn thanks Gonger!
Aachey:  And don't forget to leave the courthouse before logging out.

Aachey: Hello and welcome to the Developer's Q&A! This is an out-of-character meeting where you can hear about the development of the game and ask the Dev and GM teams any questions you might have. If you do have any questions, please line up at the lecterns in front of the stage.
Migg:  Did US switch to winter time yet?
Aachey: We have, yes.
>Migg thanks Aachey!
Aachey: And the sooner we get rid of this nonsense once and for all the happier I'll be.
Gonger:  Agreed.
>Migg claps for Aachey.
>Zrak nods in agreement with Aachey.
Aachey: "It's for the farmers". Nonsense! We're not adding more daylight!
Gonger:  EU wanted to get rid of it also, but they could not agree on which time to keep... And then Putin went crazy.
Gonger:  Statistics show that the days after a time change there is a 20% increase in car accidents.
Zrak:  Another reason in the US is so the kids aren't walking to school in the dark. Not many walk these days though.
Thosor:  walk home in the dark, when more traffic.
>Anysu smiles at Anysu's Small Table
Thosor:  real reason was to keep the gas stations and shoppers going.
>Lurielle greets everyone.
Zrak:  Good thought
Zrak:  Hi Lurielle
Aachey: So, as I said - before I got distracted ranting about DST - if you have a question please step up to the lecterns.
Aachey: For now, I'll start by giving a bit of an update on what's happened since the last meeting.
Aachey: As you may have noticed, we have a new update as of the end of last month!
Aachey: If you haven't noticed that... how are you here?
Migg:  we did!
Thosor:  a bug? :)
Aachey: Honest question, from someone who is overly-caffeinated.
Zrak  chuckles
Migg:  I wonder if it's just me seeing Anysu has her back turned to Aachey...
Zrak:  I see that too, Migg.
Aachey: I see it too.
Gonger:  I was wondering about Anysu as well.
Gova:  Yeah
Anysu:  Hmm seems I am faing him to me?
Zrak:  Are you pouting Anysu?
Aachey: We're being shunned. ;)
Anysu:  I resat
Migg:  better :)
Aachey: So there are some interesting additions in the latest release.
Zrak:  Such picky players these days! ;-)
Aachey: Those who attene events may have noticed that events appear in the active and completed windows immediately, and no longer require a restart.
Aachey: There's still no Evaluate button, but we're getting closer!
>Anysu cheers happily at Aachey!
Migg:  Great!
Aachey: Shortcut bars have been fixed, so that not only the first 10 (or 9?) could have hotkeys assigned.
Thosor:  Noticed, nice, but no rating buttons.
Aachey: Also, each character can now have a unique shortcut bar.
Aachey: I know those with alts have been hoping for that. Certainly no more than GM's. :)
Zrak:  Is there a way to increase the number of shortcuts? 27 seems to be much too low.
Migg:  alsso, can you save and load he shortcuts?
Aachey: If you're curious, they're in roughly the same place as the log files. In Windows, it's Username->AppData->Local->PSUnreal->Saves->SavedGames
Aachey: I don't think you can load them, though I haven't tried.
Aachey: The tribes system has been expanded upon. You may notice gobbles building new campfires and huts.
Aachey: They also gather resources. In their case, I think it's carp.
Aachey: Players will have the ability to help or hinder this.

Good improvment on the PS map, it's now huge... Very easy to get lost...
Here are some screenshots:

Just need to find my way out now as some of the  doors locked after we came in
I Know it's a bit of a Spoiler...BUT Every dwarven should know about this... Please no TOURISTS  ;)

That's a good question. I'll give a basic answer in this quest, and a slightly better one in a quest from the guy who studies the Crystal.

Aachey: Hello and welcome to the Developer's Q&A! This is an out-of-character meeting where you can hear about the development of the game and ask the Dev and GM teams any questions you might have. If you do have any questions, please line up at the lecterns in front of the stage.
Aachey: If there are no new questions, I'll give you a quick rundown on what's been happening behind the scenes.
Gonger: I would like to discuss something...
Aachey: Go ahead.
Gonger: There are newbies arriving, but right now practically nobody seems to stay. I whisper them, and rarely get an answer, and then they are gone.
Gonger: There is a lot of negative feedback coming through the Help channel.
Gonger: So my idea now is:
Gonger: What about deactivating the Drykken Plane for a while so newbies start with the tutorial quests?
Gonger: And see whether then more newbies decide to stay.
Gonger: An experiment.
Aachey: That may be worthwhile.
Aachey: The Labyrinth could just be streamlined, blocking off dead ends temporarily so that it's less confusing. More linear.
Gonger: Frankly, even if we keep improving the Plane, it still will give a wrong first impression of the game.
Gonger: Add the Plane at some point later in the game... a weird spell shows you this part of your arrival which you had forgotten... anything like this...
Aachey: I'll admit, I think the Dryken Plane only really works if you start in a regular map and go through the Dryken Plane, but that means creating a new map for each homeworld. Two for the elven homeworld, as that one has two portals.
Damola: Yeah, that may work. But until then:
Damola: I like Gonger's idea. I'd try it.
Aachey: Ahh, a flashback kind of thing? That could work narratively. Have an NPC talk to the newbie, and then have them go through the Dryken stuff. When they complete it, they're back at the NPC.
Aachey: Something like that?
Gonger: Yes.
Gonger: Thus we do not lose the Plane (I find the construct interesting, but not at the beginning) and have an easier entrance for newbies.
Gonger: We should NOT give up on it, but move it to a later point.
Gonger: Any player who went through the quest with the changing rooms will pass Drykken Plane also.
Gonger: I forgot the name of the quest.
Anysu: good idea to try
Anysu: without the Plane.
Gova: Menita's Puzzle?
Gonger: Yes, Gova. Thank you.
Gova: That quest should maybe be tested. I don't know if all of the teleports will work here.
Aachey: There's a very real chance that NONE of them will work. I'll give it a try.
Gova: Is the Dryken Plane where youj go in that quest? I just assumed Menita whipped out a Hookah Glyph and sent our minds elsewhere.
Aachey puts on Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit.
Anysu: Never did that quest.
Gonger: Follow the White Rabbit.
Gonger: That is NOT from the Matrix, originally, by the way.
Aachey chuckles.
Gonger: Nobody?
Aachey: But that's a good idea. The Dryken Plane isn't really the best representation of what the game is like.
Gonger: Alice in Wonderland.
Gonger: But now comes the difficult part, Aachey...
Aachey: I just assumed everyone knewabout Alice in WOnderland.
Aachey: I certainly ripped it off for the last few Legacy events.
Aachey: Convincing Talad?
Gonger: You read my mind.
Gonger: But that was not hard in this case.
Aachey: Yeah.
Aachey: Talad is travelling at the moment - or was over the last week - but we could discuss it with him at a Q&A.
Aachey: We've talked on Discord.
Gonger: Amazing song, by the way. I think I never heard that one before.
Gonger: Does anybody here think it is NOT worth trying?
Gonger: Temporarily disable the Plane.
Karzela: I think it is a fine idea, but Talad may think differently.
Gonger: We will go through that door when we come to it.
Aachey: Let's build a player base again, before we chase them off. :)
Karzela: The seed was well planted in Discord earlier today.
Aachey: After all, chasing off players by dropping ulbernauts on them is a GM's job.
Gonger: Well said, Aachey.
Gonger: Right now we lose too many newbies too quickly.
Gonger: And honestly, I do not want to advertise right now, and lose people who might stay when starting with the Quests...
Gonger: So let's try to force this down Talad's... ehrm, I mean, let's convince him to try it.
Karzela mumbles, "A bit more respect from the stage..."
Anysu: Speaking of whispers, can a player choose not to have a whisper option in thier chat?
Aachey: So Talad has kept working on the tribes element of the game.
Aachey: Choose to not display it in main, or not have it at all?
Anysu: choose to not to have it.
Aachey: You can turn off the ability to see whispers in main by going to Options->Interface, and under chat text to main tab turn the button by whisper to off. I don't think we can remove that tab entirely, as it's part of the UI.
Anysu: Okay so it can be turned off. I asked because if someone sent a whisper to another and they didn't have whispers on they would not see it and reply.
Aachey: If the option is off they may not see that the whisper tab is highlighted. Especially if they're new.
Anysu: I just wodered that if Gonger was whispering and no newbie saw it or didn't have the option on so didn't reply because of that.
Gonger: Oh, excellent point, Anysu.
Aachey: So Talad has it working such that gobble tribes can gather resources, and use that resource (like rocks or carp) to develop their home. In the case of gobbles, they can build more fires, and eventually more huts.
Aachey: Players can slow that down by killed gobbles, and reverse it by attacking and destroying the huts and (presumably) fires.
Gova: Eagle gobbles and sewer gobbles are nice and shouldn't be picked on, but serpent gobbles are jerks and I wouldn't mind messing up their huts.
Karzela: Personally, I always loved the look of the tattooed gobbles and their huts.
Aachey: And in time this will be expanded to other creatures.
Aachey: I think Talad started with gobbles because they have huts already in the database, but creatures like Tlokes, Tefusangs, and Ulbernauts will have nests too.
Aachey: He's also got a nice surprise coming, though he's only posted in in Supporters so I can't say what it is. :)
Aachey: And no, I won't answer questions.
Aachey: Also, he's now checked the Observatory NPC locations and will be adding them to the game shortly.
Aachey: It'll be a nice surprise, Anysu. :)
Karzela: Well done!
Karzela: Hundreds of shortcuts!!!
Aachey: I'm quite fond of the NPCs I create, perhaps unsurprisingly, so I love to see them in game.
Gonger: I am trying to remember the surprise... I guess I must cheat, and check the Supporters channel.
Gonger: Ah, yes. People will love this.
Daevaorn thinks Gonger is a tease.
Aachey: What's the point of getting advance notice if you can't dangle it in front of other people?
Daevaorn: Any news on the more pressing UI/UX issues like the said shortcuts?
Daevaorn: Sorry if I missed that question before.
Anysu: Or maybe it will be more dance emote options! Would like that!
Aachey: Nobody had asked that yet today. I know Talad is working on it, but I have nothing to report right now.
Daevaorn: Thanks.
Aachey: Any other questions?
Karzela: None from me.
Aachey: Don't forget, the /mute command supports the area syntax. :P
Anysu: Thank you Uadjet and Gonger for the updates.
Aachey: I think we can bring the meeting to a close, then. Thank you all for coming, and I'll see you at the next Q&A in... three weeks, this time. Until then, have fun playing and maybe give an event or three a try!
Aachey: Oh, and I finished another couple quests. Forgot to mention that.

PS I am not allowed to create a new subject under PlaneShift News and Rules, so I chose General Discussion. I do not think it makes much of a difference.
