In-Game Roleplay Events / Re: [PvP] DarkStars Duelists Championship
« on: April 04, 2016, 11:15:03 am »
Sounds like heaps of fun. But hey, don't forget about the calendar!

Some last detail questions:
Are glyph sacks disallowed? Probably. Not a big deal to re-purify all glyphs.
Enchanted weapons: I guess all status effects are forbidden, just like magical damage? Maybe one thing implies the other, then this question is pointless.
Combat moves are all allowed? Some complained that synergy messages flood the system tab - I don't mind ;)

Development Deliberation / Re: PlaneShift.Translation project
« on: April 04, 2016, 04:20:26 am »
I think this system worked pretty well for Super Tux Kart, which seems to have very broad language support. For a single-player based, kid-friendly game, this is very useful and reasonable.
For PlaneShift, I think a basic understanding of English is crucial to enjoy the game experience, so translation packages for the user interface and help menus are less important. However, since there are already some translation string tables for PS, it is probably no bad idea to set things up on transifex.
So, in case I spot any flaws with the German translations, I'd be willing to help with small corrections, but I guess that part is already fine.
EDIT: 11% complete, 834 strings left to translate?! I thought that was completed ages ago. Well, maybe I'll submit a bunch of translations later.

General Discussion / Re: PVP tournament rewards, a new game imbalance
« on: March 31, 2016, 10:57:31 am »
I see no indication that the above list are indeed the rewards for said tournament.
(...) they I've seen some displayed items in the DarkStars Camp, and assumed themself that those items would be the rewards.
I've just seen the weapons near the arena entrance, they are all q50 now. *shrug*

Thanks for your answers.
Ah, an open form of the games will help to speed things up for sure. (Though, in another open source game, I've seen a similar format torney that has been running for months). You are certainly planning to host an opening ceremony or something similar, which will attract a crowd of spectators and give the fighters a first good occasion to carry out some of the duels.

Right, I've been around (and not around) for a while... I guess it is my book that coined the term "brute" weapon. I don't remember the mentioned special rewards, but I once looted some q200 weapons. But hey, let us not get off topic here, and focus on the fun stuff.

Hey Sarko, thanks for your effort to organize an "official" tournament!
The last one of this kind must be decades ago  ;D
And players like me got too lazy to host combat events, so it is cool the GM team takes initiative for a kind of event that used to be outside of their scope.

I have not enlisted so far for one reason: What will be the GMT times? It would be a shame to occupy one of the slots only to find out later that you cannot attend  X-/
Since you're not going for a single (or double) elimination format, this event will need a lot of time and good organization. I guess it will span over a few days?

Also, it is interesting that you come up with this historical event shortly after the first combat techniques have been released. Mhm, I don't even know yet how they work *shrug*. But it is a great opportunity to promote the new mechanics for sure!

Sorry to address this point, but I have seen two (partly overlapping) complaint topics with a weird list of rewards for these events. I don't want to bring over any discussions to this topic, but I think it would be a good idea to clarify things quickly. If you can give a statement that the actual rewards still need to be defined by the committee, that would be good. If you could either confirm or deny said list of rewards, that would be even better. Personally, I think it is a good choice to hand out items with one or two good affixes and a base type (q50) that cannot be looted currently, such that the rewards look and feel somewhat special. But of course, the choice is up to you! And I don't believe you are going to pick a q300 variation of the only triple-affix combination that is already clearly out of balance, given that you already mentioned broken affixes in the topic's header ;)

Thanks again and good luck for the tournament, which certainly has the potential to become a high-light in the history of PS events.

You only get the practice points for using your weapons and armor skills. A while ago not even these were given. But it was always fun to give out prizes for small PvP player events (e.g. left signature link).

I did not mean an active ability to /yield, but the passive mechanics that you get knocked down when your health is depleted. So, if you want to kill someone, you'll have to deliver another finishing blow. Actually, I think that could also be nice for arena NPCs - getting a reward for knocking them down, instead of the kill-and-loot mechanics. But yeah, off-topic.

I think you come up with some good points, Volki.
The suggestion about stealing mechanics is nice - and also implies the option that a player can be in "yield" state, not only after (auto-)accepting a duel. So far, if you defeat someone in a PvP zone, during a guild war or via /groupchallenge, they are instantly sent to DR. No choices, no yielding. I think this is an aspect where PvP zones could be made much more interesting.

a pvp currency that's earned by winning duels
About ten years ago, there was a pretty useless system of duel points: http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=25922.0

I don't think such a currency would be beneficial. From time to time, people tried to use guild points for a similar, player-driven system. Never really worked out well, as far as I have heard.

Placement of PvP zones: I think it is important to have clear boundaries, such that you know when you enter or leave the zone. An entire map instance might be cool, but then we have to be careful that loading points are outside of the pvp zone.

Wish list / Re: new channel
« on: February 27, 2016, 05:44:47 am »
I bet this has been described before, but I did not find it with a quick forum search. So, here you go.
Per default, the chat tab for channels is only connected to "gossip". You can join any number of other channels:
Code: [Select]
/join blablaThis opens the channel named blabla. If you're the first to join, a new channel is created. Use number commands to send text to one channel.
Code: [Select]
/1 this text message goes to the gossip channel
Code: [Select]
/2 this text message goes to the blabla channelSeveral channels in the same tab can be annoying. You can leave a channel any time:
Code: [Select]
/leave 1This closes the channel bound to slot 1, gossip.
Then text you enter in this tab goes to blabla, and only to blabla.
Most players still prefer groups as ooc chat tabs. Some because they got used to it, some because they want to make sure only invited players take part in the chat.
Code: [Select]
/invite feas

So, willingly walking into a PvP zone and getting killed is harassment?
Heheh, certainly not. Therefore the following remarks about the added value and about on-screen notifications ("willingly"?).
Sometimes it was a bit disruptive when a player one-shot-killed guys from a save distance, but that's part of the game. Harassment? Can be felt as such, even though it does not apply in terms of game policies. *shrug*

PvP zones can be a hotspot for exciting encounters, but also for harassment and frustration. Either way, they can add to the game experience for sure.
As far as I remember, the PvP pit in the arena was emptied for events like the champion's cup (yes, that's a long time ago).
New zones with interesting NPCs could be a nice addition.
If any new ones are added, maybe an on-screen notification when entering such zone would be helpful.
Concerning new types of gladiators: I would love to see an arena veteran NPC that is impervious to attack, unless the player challenges him via the npc dialogue menu. But I guess that is another topic.
