Adenu died at the hands of Morsh.
Morsh died at the hands of Jinil.
Many lives have been turned upside down due to contraband potions.
But who is really responsible?
Citizens of Hydlaa, after a long and tedious investigation, it is time for Lanfor to be brought to justice. The trial is to be held in two days time [Thursday 2000 UTC]. We will hear evidence From Edeli of the guard, Jinil and citizens involved. Witnesses who were summonsed should report to the court house 30 minutes prior to the start of the trial.
The fate of Lanfor will be decided by a Jury of her peers. Jurors will be selected at random from the populace and should be impartial. If you would like to be considered for the Jury, please voice your interest here.
Anyone wishing to view the trial should also arrive at the court house near the start of the trial. Doors will open to spectators 5 minutes before the commencement of proceedings.
There is to be no talking during the trial unless called upon to do so. Anyone causing a disruption of any kind will be ejected from the court house. Any serious breaches will result in a contempt of court charge and offenders will be jailed for the duration of the trial.
[Due to the limited range of /say, we will be using the auction tab for the trial so that all may be able to read.]
-
[Will this be an event with open outcome? Or is the storyline fixed so that GMs will interfere OOC wise once things get out of hand like in certain other events?]
-
Lepohi raises his hand "As a fair and impartial citizen I would like to be considered for jury duty on this trial."
[Great job guys, can't wait for it. Will set my alarm to be there.]
-
Cant help yourself can you Donari.. Hows about you remain silent for the duration.
-
[So no uprising. A pity.]
-
Becouse of the low turnout 1 day prior i will volunteer myself for jury.
-
As an honest law abiding citizen, I, Sir Tolian Tyndale, would like to voice my interest to be a juror.
-
ME! Xemmas Egaveff, the dwarf will volunteer for jury duty!
[just need to know what 2000 UTC time is :-[ ]
-
To clear up the time zone issue. UTC is effectively GMT 0. I used UTC and not GMT because people get confused with GMT when daylight savings has kicked in. So treat UTC as 0.
-
sorry for been so persistent! but 2000 UTC=8 pm GMT right?
-
Right.
-
So if I'm in a GMT+12 Timezone... its 8am my time?? and its winter DST here.
-
Akkaido I am utc+10. 20:00 utc Thursday is 6am Friday for me.
As for what dst does to your utc offset you will have to work that one out yourself. I live in the land of no dst. \\o//
-
Thats whats got me confused, because I'm Southern Hemisphere, so my DST swings the opposite way to everyone else, so I've recently changed 2hrs difference... :o
I'll just be up early tomorrow lol.
-
if you have an unix system (linux macosx bsd) or cygwin you can do date -u in your terminal to get the utc current hour
-
And for everyone else there is http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/gmt-converter.htm \\o//
-
/me would really appreciate it if someone PMed him the logs of the trial after it's over...
-
Nice event guys.
Only concern is that the evidence supplied had many people thinking it was not weighted enough. In my personal opinion I knew she should die for her crimes but there are now Lanfor sympathisers.
Great work on the story though!

Mere words are not enough to express how excited I am to have been a small part of this great happening. It started off, simply enough, as a single session event. Then, by fortune, skill, or a combination of both, the players were moved enough by the story to drive it forward and ask for more. The team responded happily. Before we knew it, the players parried with creativity, passion and empathy, which made it well nigh impossible to just 'make it a 2 parter and wrap it up'. Suddenly, we found ourselves in the midst of a multi part event that had captured us as fully as it had the player participants. There was no stopping for any of us until the tale was told in full.
Mind you, I have been a part of many events, both as a player and a team member. Bearing this in mind, I must say that I have never seen an instance where so many pieces of PlaneShift have joined together to produce such a seamless, moving story that spanned so many days and so many emotions. Now that all is over, I can tell you with pride that GMs of all ranks, Devs of different flavors, and prospects from many disciplines spent many an hour working together to keep this story going.
What's more, all of us were struck by the thought and care that the players gave to the storyline. I cannot and will not speak for the rest of the team, but I personally was unspeakably pleased with the respect all of you gave to the tale as it was set out initially, and the cleverness you used to keep it going and bring more life to it. It was a rare and beautiful synergy between player and staff; neither pushing, neither pulling.
OK, praise spoken, applause given... let's get to the meat of the matter... can we do this again? Please? ;)
-
Now to a bit of criticism. I'm sure lots of players enjoyed the event, however, there are a few things that did not go too well. One, when a character of mine and some others tried confronting Jinil during part one of the event after the crowd had left, we were moved away with the explanation that the event location needed clearing. Why not let the event progress dynamically instead according to a fixed schedule? Someone else told the guards the group lying for Jinil was lying, but he was ignored by them.
Besides that, I found the trial far too much like RL, and more player involvement could have been achieved. Why not hire players as guards or prosecution for the trial? Furthermore, the trial could have been something more creative than a copy of RL. Jury, prosecution, defense, honourable judge. Felt somewhat like a tv show to me.
-
Great job folks, kudos to the organizers and participants! \\o//
Why not let the event progress dynamically instead according to a fixed schedule?
I couldn't attend unfortunately, but the answer to this particular question is simple - because people from different timezones worked together to make it happen and they can only stay for a set amount of hours. Behind the characters there are real people, who may not be able to stay on for a lot of time. Some have jobs, have to get up early and so on.

I wish i'd managed to stay to the end.
When the server went down i waited 15 minutes for it to come back up. But unfortunately bed was calling as it was 12.30 am my time..
Hope my dissapearance from the jury didn't cause too many problems :)
Oh, and what verdict did the jury pass? (I'd have probably gone for "not guilty" myself :P)

Again, congrats on the event.
Yes it was TV-show-like... but that's what the court processes are like. And if anything, a TV-show like court is entertaining.
In real life, people that are in a similar position to devs/GMs are prosecutors and judges, and possibly a defendant.
You don't get to be a judge irl simply by deciding you will RP as one. You have to adhere to the system and work your way there.
Remember, PlaneShift is striving to create an emulation of society. This means the masses of players will only ever be normal people, and only the privileged are anything more.
So, the fact that we 'normal' players even have the honour of being witnesses and jurors in the court is good enough for me. I was VERY pleased with the amount of player involvement in the court.
For those who want more player involvement, I urge you to realise that the GMs/Settings devs ARE players, that have played long and hard and earned the right to be elevated to their positions.
Again, congrats on the people who took their time to put this event together.
Anyone with criticism, I invite you to work as long and as hard as them to get that status and then YOU run an event of equal or greater quality, because I believe the effort taken by the people on this event was... I have no words, but I challenge you, to be as good as them.
If you become better, than that can only be good for PlaneShift. But I am more than happy with the events as they are.
To sum it up: Quality is excellent, it takes alot of effort, either be grateful, or step up and do hard work yourself, and prove to us something better's possible, because in my opinion, the quality so far matches RL, which is unfair, unjust, etc...
Welcome to reality, in a virtual space!!

I think Oomi has actualy spoken for the majority of us. What impressed us the most was the heart and comitment you players gave to all causes. Weather it be finding Morsh and Jinil, Protecting and lieing to keep Jinil alive and sitting through a long a tedious trial to the end to see that Justice was served. You all pulled together, you faught together and you took our one single event to a 5 part epic. I think most of you will agree that we did allow this event to progress dynamicaly, considering the first event was written with a specific outcome, you players changed all that for us. Just brilliant.
All i can hope for is that you treat future events with the same ammount of heart and soul, because you guys made these events far more emmersive and interactive than we could have hoped for. Great job indeed.
Finaly i woiuld like to thank the staff myself. Some got up at stupid o'clock in the morning to be there and others stayed up till way after their bed time to see it through. The dedication to a cause not of their department or skill set was proof that the staff are all dedicated to makeing PS a fun and exciting place to be. So, thank you team!!
Now to a bit of criticism. I'm sure lots of players enjoyed the event, however, there are a few things that did not go too well. Firstly you have every single fact wrong. The event you 'intercepted' was part two. Secondly, you did not try to join the event YOU tried to twist the event into YOUR RP and into something YOU wanted it to be. Like you said the crowd had moved on, meaning that section of the event was over, it was arrogant of you to think that we would completely restructure our event just for you. Get over yourself Donari. With your behaviour last night your lucky you didnt end up in a cell. Ignoring the courts orders and trying to buy your way onto the jury isnt RP its arrogance.

I've stayed up till 3 or 4 in the morning for this event, trying to make everything go as planned, along with the rest of The Team. I've witnessed Hanix working on the event, and I must say that some people here have no idea how much work they/we are actually putting in this. Setting the courtroom up, setting the deliberation room up, working together to find suitable roles for each player, trying to make it all go as smooth as possible. I have to applaud Hanix for doing this all, and making things work.
-
Hanix, there is a simple but fundamental difference between me and my characters.

Hanix, there is a simple but fundamental difference between me and my characters.
Yes, your characters are obnoxious in game and you are obnoxious on the forums. :)
Why do you need to keep knocking peoples hard work? I love events and I fully appreciate the work that goes into making them happen, you should too.
-
I enjoy them too, however I think they could be better. That is why I provide feedback.
-
OK, praise spoken, applause given... let's get to the meat of the matter... can we do this again? Please? ;)
YES!!!! More events!! Again Again!!!! ;D :surrender: \\o// :D
-
Sounds to me like there was far more player involvement in this trial than there was in in vileneck's. Things do change.
-
Just wanted to say I loved the event. I'm just sorry I missed most of the chapter where Lanfor was captured. Would be nice if we could of had some idea when the following chapters were coming instead of leaving it up to pure chance that we were in the right place at the right time to take part in the next part.
Thanks to the whole team for all the work I'm sure this full event involved. Hopefully there will be more like it in the near future.
-
I would just like to add my comment.........Well done Hanix and all the Gm and DEv team, for the hard work you all bought in bringing us this event over the 5 parts..........You all worked incrediably hard, and it paid off well.........Thank you all....
For those who find all they can do is give negative comments back, i feel sorry for you......What about hard work, planning......so what if things didnt reach and outcome YOU would have liked......it was an event, one many in game took part in, and was able to take part in........for those who worked finding Jinil , and bringing him back,,along with capturing Lanfor, i salute you.......we all worked together to help this event come off.....we could have spent hours discussing which way to go, how to do it etc..but we worked with each other.....and bought a good outcome to the event....i for one loved it,,,stayed up way past bedtime to be there,,and cannot wait for more events like this....
CONGRATS HANIX AND ALL OTHERS WHO BOUGHT US THIS GREAT SERIES OF EVENTS
-
Cost me some sleeping hours to attend as long as i did. too bad the server crashed.
I Decided i wouldnt wait for it to come back so thanks xemmas for standing in as juror.
To comment on what hanix said on irc during the down time of the server ("I realise this can be boring for the people who didnt do all the previous chapters")
I have to say thats not true :) i only did part 1 becouse the others where impossible for me due to timzone and just bad timining for me. But i liked the trial becouse it explained the rest of the story to me, or at least the highlights.
also, Great job, congratulations to the whole team!
-
thanks for the congratulations and thanks for having allowed this event to run like this. i can't really add much to what hanix and oomi said except that I'm pleased myself that everyone liked it and that i had nicely thought answers to my questions :D
-
OK time for some real credit i think. Many of the staff played many different charcters through out the series, as this is the case i wont state who played who. however the following were involved in one way or another.
Hanix
Aiken
Smekel
Oomi
Weltall
Valrion
Tympanic
Lanarel
Xopal
Roberra
Bovek
Vonor
Kerol
Some had small parts in one others had parts in all, but all worked hard as hell to make it fun.
-
Why not let the event progress dynamically instead according to a fixed schedule?
You must mean like what actually happened. In that event at the initial meeting with Jinil the players did decide what was happening. Many players had witnessed what happened to Morsh in part 1. The search party had been told that Jinil would not come in alive and expected to have to kill him. They suggested lying to Edeli. They suggested taking blood stained armour and Jinil's sword back as proof of his death. That is not going by a fixed schedule. Enough planning had gone into this we could go with what the players chose and in this case they chose to let Jinil live.
With this series the players have been great. I would like to thank the you all for helping make this happen.
-
I think Donari's annoyance over players shaping the event is simply because he couldn't bribe his way on to the jury.
So... explain to me Donari Tyndale, why should anyone sympathise with your outcry over "player involvement" when you tried to bribe your way in.
You in my opinion are guilty of attempted godmodding. Trying to force things your way, then whinging and criticising everyone else for not following YOU.
The only criticism I had for this event was about IC happenings, about different evidences supplied, but when you look at it, what they've really done is divide the players IC, causing players debating IC the events, and caused sympathy for an evil character (something Hollywood often attempts at and fails).
Top show, folks!! Just wonderful!!
-
Just a small word in Donari's Defence, that is what the character does, so do not knock this player for doing what the character would do.
-
So is Tolian a corrupt bribing merchant who tries to get his own way in legal events?
Or is he an honest merchant as he claimed to my alt once when my alt was thinking of flattening him with a club?
Quite contradicting.
Tolian didn't bribe the event runners to get on the jury IC... Tolians meant to be "the most honest merchant in town" (his own words).
He attempted to bribe his way in because he's a godmodder. Because he wanted to decide the way the event went. Just look, before the court trial took place, you'll see evidence of him accusing the event holders of fixing everything, when the event had not even started! In this very thread.
While the rest of us sat back to enjoy the show, Tolian/Donari wanted to push himself on the event, make HIS mark. The way the event was written and planned meticulously for hours made no difference to him, he wanted to change it based on his little experience in the event.
His organisation is another godmod, he has setup a modern stock monopoly in a medieval/fantasy game. His style of RP is that everyone has to play on his OOC terms or he refuses to RP with them.
In short, he has no basis for his criticisms, it's just childish, arrogant tantrum-ing to get his own way as much as possible.
-
I have no wish for this thread to be closed so, just keep in mind Player and Characters are not the same.
HaniX already knows I think highly of the hard work he and the team put into this.
-
Wow, Akkaido, is that envy? No seriously. Did I criticise the selection of the jury? Can't remember that. I never said the -whole- event was senseless, I pointed out aspects of it. A character can not be a godmodder, and you know nothing about his motives. Neither do you know anything about godmodding, as godmodding would have been if I said "Tolian is now in the jury". Btw, read some books about history. Stocks were invented almost a millenium ago ;). And as Rennaj said, I, the player, can criticise something without my character being affected. If you want, I'll explain these things to you in detail, Akkaido. I'm always glad to help out people like you :)
-
Did I criticise the selection of the jury? Can't remember that. I never said the -whole- event was senseless, I pointed out aspects of it.
No, you pointed out that you believe that GMs have, in the past, used OOC means to turn events in the direction of their choosing, and that you believe they will do it again. You said it here...
[Will this be an event with open outcome? Or is the storyline fixed so that GMs will interfere OOC wise once things get out of hand like in certain other events?]
This strongly implies that many GM events have foregone conclusions that cannot be changed by player participation and will be enforced by the event holders in OOC ways. This is incorrect. There are indeed scripts for each event, but events often go off-script due to clever and unexpected plot twists that the players themselves have come up with. This series is a prime example of that. There was every expectation that the players would kill Jinil. As a group they decided they did not want to and came up with an excellent alternative. The GMs, on-the-fly, scrapped everything they had planned to say and do and supported the players' alternative instead. This happens often in GM eventing.
There ARE times when OOC methods (such as warn or kick) are used on a player in an event. There are also times when OOC methods are used on a player OUTSIDE an event. If a player is being disruptive to the gameplay of others, in an event or out of it, the GMs are trained to end the disruption. This is one of their jobs.
And as Rennaj said, I, the player, can criticise something without my character being affected.
Yes, you absolutely can. The two are not necessarily equivalent. Perhaps the questions directed to you in this thread may simply be the result of awkward timing. Donari made some critiques. A while later Donari does some char development on Tolian, showing Tolian's tendency towards some darker behaviors. Perhaps some folks have tied the two events together a bit more closely than you intended.
Yet more constructive event feedback would be great, so the next event can be even better. Thanks, all of you!
-
Me? Envious?
Such a stupid, self centred arrogant comment is only further evidence that your style of RP centres solely around yourself.
-
<3.
-
There are extreme anti-RPers, so we need extreme pro-RPers, and vice versa. Extremists are everywhere, face it, take it!xD
Akkaido, chill, Donari, keep it lower at times, even I got annoyed by you sometimes;)
Or is the storyline fixed so that GMs will interfere OOC wise once things get out of hand like in certain other events?
A valid question, no reason to bash anyone about outering such.
Not having participated these series, from what I have read, this event must have been some pretty nice one, regarding organization as well as by content. Congrats o/
-
Or is the storyline fixed so that GMs will interfere OOC wise once things get out of hand like in certain other events?
A valid question, no reason to bash anyone about outering such.
The problem with that question is we are being publically accused of something we did not do and if we are going to do it again. As have been said by myself and others the players decided the direction of events. The outcome of the of the trial was not fixed. The jury was made up of players and not gm. They had a good discussion about which way to vote. If they had decided not guilty we would have gone with it.
-
Excellent work guys! I wish I could've been there!
Donari: As you should know, since this has been explained before and since you've had the chance to work behind the scenes yourself, events flow based on the decisions reached by the party of characters as a group. That means that in order to get the event to change directions, a single character has to first convince the party before even considering convincing the NPCs/GM chars. Talking straight to the NPCs or GMs ignoring what the group wants will not work. We ignore that kind of "realism" simply because the main purpose of events is to entertain as many players as possible and letting a player hijack the event goes against that (and by "hijack" I mean someone singlehandedly changing the story with no regard of other players involvement -from being able to follow it to understand what's going on to allowing their characters to react to their attempts).
I hope that clears any doubts but feel free to ask away if you got any more questions. We'll be happy to explain it all in detail. We're always glad to help out people like you as much as we're glad to help people not quite like you.
Again, great work fellas!
-
I never accused you to fix the outcome of the trial. My question was based on past events where players where /impersonated to make the storyline progress the way the GM team wanted.
-
Every event is seperately organised and run, so just because one event requires OOC intervention to keep it under control, it does not mean the next event will be played in such a manner. Also, what evidence is there that the GMs had to resort to such a method? And was such action justified, because in my opinion it can be. In the recent events, there was a point in time where I wished a certain player (not you Donari/Tolian) would let other players RP with the rogues by the lake... and it led to a huge fight with the rogues (which I backed off from and refused to partake in).
Donari, this wasn't a GM event, it was a series of events brought to us by the Settings developers. You must realise that this is THEIR story to tell, and we are all here as citizens of Yliakum to watch and help our authority-figures.
-
It is our story, since everyone is a part of Yliakum. If you want to tell -your- story, you should go and write a book :P
-
Donari, stop being a ne'er do well.
-
I think it is more like Yliakum is the developer's playground and they are nice enough to let us play there.
-
It is our story, since everyone is a part of Yliakum. If you want to tell -your- story, you should go and write a book :P
Actually, we are mere citizens. The people who run Yliakum, who have all the say are not out of line for putting you back in line. It's how society works IRL, and therefore is what should be emulated in RP.
I think it is more like Yliakum is the developer's playground and they are nice enough to let us play there.
She's pretty spot on. If you wanna have it as your playground, join the dev team!
