General Discussion / Re: Getting rid of unwanted items
« on: January 21, 2014, 05:41:35 pm »
If the dust has a use, it should probably have a non-zero value.  I like the idea of it being useful in unexpected ways.  It this was nethack, I would have tried a bunch of things :-)

For those who don't know it, almost everything in nethack has some effect when used in unexpected ways.  So you can say, "what happens if I dip this magic sword in this potion?"  and "what happens if I polymorph myself into a metal-eating monster and eat this magic ring?"  Etc.  The possibilities are quite fun, and lead to all sorts of interesting experimentation.

The furnace idea never occurred to me because I'm not a crafter and so don't use them.  Perhaps leaving dust in the enchanter should do the same thing.

If there is a use for the dust, well then, that is different.  Though still, we all need a way to get rid of things.

General Discussion / Getting rid of unwanted items
« on: January 20, 2014, 11:24:46 am »
One thing I've never figured out in PlaneShift:  What is the preferred way of getting rid of things?  Many items can be sold, but some can't.  In particular, we are now generating lots of piles of dust during the gem enchanting process.  Now, maybe there is a use for this dust.  If so, I've not found it.

It raises the question though:  how can we get rid of unwanted items, other than leaving them around for GMs to deal with?  Which is not fair to the GMs.

I will try and make it, but I have a RL obligation on the 28th.  Xarthen is not a Circle Master of any of the ways (any more).  I'm holding out to see what Shadow Casting brings, though it may be a long wait.

Just a happy followup note.  I tried an update a couple of weeks ago, and things now seem to be running fine.  I've begun a little exploring, and hope to be back in Yliakum sometime soon.

PlaneShift Mods / Re: New skin

It's great to see this.  PS needs more skins.  I've always found elves difficult to use, and far preferred the Default skin from years ago.  More options would be great!

Congratulations, this sounds wonderful!  Some major milestones here.

I look forward to playing again one day when I once again have a computer with a supported video card.  In the meantime, it's exciting to see the progress via the website and forums.

I never got it to stay running for more than a minute.  Sad to think that AMD won't support a two-year-old video card.  Though I'm also not certain why X.org becomes incompatible with older drivers as it's updated.  The lack of compatibility over time is frustrating for those of us who don't want to buy new computers every year, or run Windows.

Thanks LigH.  That's not it, apparently, but I will keep trying.

Thinking it might be some holdover from my old setup, I moved and let PS create a new .PlaneShift directory.  Now it gets as far as starting the client and getting through the "loading bar", then dies before entering 3D.  So not as good...

Thanks Roled.  I'd love to get back in-game again, and see the old KS crowd for sure!

Are people using recent linux distros and unsupported ATI cards having success using legacy Catalyst or mesa?  The former seems like a temporary solution, since it won't work unless you downgrade to an old X.Org, and that won't be viable for very long.

I managed to get it running directly via psclient.  It seems to run fairly well using the open source drivers (AMD/ATI no longer supports my 1 1/2-year old graphics card!).  However, I've experienced a hang and crash.

Trying to get PS running again after a new install of Kubuntu 12.10.  The install ran fine, then the launcher, which upgraded itself properly and then the rest of PS.

On clicking PLAY however, I get endless scrolling messages:
The launcher installer Failed to remove file /this/pslaunch.tmp.bin

I'll keep at it, and will record the process and results here.

Thanks, Talad.  As someone who was running into this issue I can confirm that it is now working again.

I've run into the same issue, trying three times.  I've checked spam, etc.
