Development Deliberation / MD5 Cracked! Dangerous for PlaneShift!
« on: August 27, 2004, 05:25:39 am »
MD5 Has been cracked. Although this required 80 000 CPU Hours on an Intel Itanuim 2, in about a year or so this could lead to major cheating on PlaneShift. I suggest The AutoUpdater should have its secure hashing methods switched to a more safer system in the upcomming CB Release.

Just ta let you all know

Find More Info about this by searching on Google for \"MD5 Cracked\"

http://www.planeshift.it/about.html

From the about page:

What is Planeshift?

The objective of the PlaneShift Team is to create a virtual fantasy world in which a player can start as a peasant in search of fame and become a hero. We will focus our efforts in the reproduction of a real world with politics, economy, many non-player-characters controlled by the server that will bring to life our world even without players connected!

We want to give FREE access to everyone, without the need to either purchase the game or pay a monthly fee. Servers and bandwidth will be donated by sponsors.

Our virtual world is persistent, and this means you can connect to it at every hour of day or night and you will always find players and npcs wandering our realms. You will be able to disconnect and reconnect again, the server saves the actual status of your character including his possessions.

You will use a client program to interact with our world, that enables you to have a 3D view of the surroundings.

Here are 10 reasons why you should become a player and a fan of PlaneShift:

   1. Planeshift is a great place to find new friends from all over the world!
   2. PlaneShift is a virtual world where you always dreamed of living
   3. PlaneShift is the first 3D MMORPG to be free for players
   4. Thanks to our open development process, the game will be expanded endlessly for years to come
   5. Planeshift is a game made by roleplayers to bring you all the immersion you need from a virtual world
   6. A unique setting, realistic combat rules, great magic system with hundreds of spells
   7. No budgetary constraints will stop development of the world or prevent the addition of new ideas
   8. You can build your house, your castle, your realm
   9. You have the option to live as an adventurer or as a normal citizen, both paths rewarded in game
  10. You can submit comments, ideas, bugs and the dev team will take those into account in future releases

Its not up to YOU to decide wether planeshift is going to be free or not, even after the Dev\'s have stated its going to be free and after turning down donations.

Well if you check out my Model Injecting/Exporting topic you will know why I wanted it. I have no experience in compling in Windows. I really want to contribute models and Im pretty sure that Models are store Server Side. Anyway talk about that in the other topic!

I got 3 questions about custom models

1) Is it possible to export a character/building model, change what you want (possible make a whole new thing) then import it back?

2) Is it possible to make my own models (with 3ds max 5). If so I can contribute alot to the project.

3) Where are all the models stored?

Edit: oh yea and are models store server or client side?

Well, not really. Unless you have an amazing computer, almsot all of your slowdowns are not caused by the netowork. If you can\'t even type or if you pause while moving, that\'s a local problem. But if you can type in a few lines before you see them, of if other people are hoppig around, thats network.
There are more than 10 people who can compile it, and one of these threads was about compliing on windoze afterall. And in theory, if it\'s just for your own amusement you could use the officla art/maps, but you\'d want to repalce that before you invite other people.
Also, if you are looking for the devs to get you the files, if you haven\'t heard they are quite busy. They haven\'t even had time to update the parts of the website that haven\'t been changed since MB.

Thank you for providing info THATS helpful (josephoenix you sounded kinda harsh and provided no useful info that got me closer to getting a server for my own use).

There would be no npcs, no crystal spawns, you will only have the podium map so you can\'t even see the rest of the small town (for now) that is hydlaa. Also, people who are codemonkeys (i.e. the people who compile the server for fun ;)) generally run linux. I recommend gentoo.org \'s flavor... not the easiest to install, but having finished that rather enjoyable process you have the know-how to compile the server yourself!

If you run a private server. You will literally be doing nothing, with no one, in a miniature nowhere since you cannot use the release art on anything besides the official server.

I could post you a copy of the executable, but that simply won\'t work. you need to have the dlls and all that windows crap. Plus, you may not have libMySql and even if you do, the plugin will be compilied differently and the linux elf format executable (or the mac version, but I only have that for the CB server) will be as much use to you as \"text.txt\" padded to 3.5 megabytes and renamed psserver.exe

Fine let me be alone in an incomplete Hydala just please I really want it. Im HD with linux got wiped months ago and I never reinstalled it (using the dual boot method). I am planning on getting linux back on but for now could you stop being so critical and could someone post a complied server please!

And about those crappy dll\'s could you help me find them?

I am experimenting with my client and parts of the server. I really dont care if there are crystal spawns. And there are few NPC\'s on the offical MB Server anyway.

Why dont I use the Official Server?

1)Its so damn laggy...if I host it locally it will be much faster. I know that the game engine is part of the reason its laggy but isnt the server hosted in Singapore?

2)See #1

3)Is there really a problem in just posting an already complied server?
