What is Planeshift?
The objective of the PlaneShift Team is to create a virtual fantasy world in which a player can start as a peasant in search of fame and become a hero. We will focus our efforts in the reproduction of a real world with politics, economy, many non-player-characters controlled by the server that will bring to life our world even without players connected!
We want to give FREE access to everyone, without the need to either purchase the game or pay a monthly fee. Servers and bandwidth will be donated by sponsors.
Our virtual world is persistent, and this means you can connect to it at every hour of day or night and you will always find players and npcs wandering our realms. You will be able to disconnect and reconnect again, the server saves the actual status of your character including his possessions.
You will use a client program to interact with our world, that enables you to have a 3D view of the surroundings.
Here are 10 reasons why you should become a player and a fan of PlaneShift:
1. Planeshift is a great place to find new friends from all over the world!
2. PlaneShift is a virtual world where you always dreamed of living
3. PlaneShift is the first 3D MMORPG to be free for players
4. Thanks to our open development process, the game will be expanded endlessly for years to come
5. Planeshift is a game made by roleplayers to bring you all the immersion you need from a virtual world
6. A unique setting, realistic combat rules, great magic system with hundreds of spells
7. No budgetary constraints will stop development of the world or prevent the addition of new ideas
8. You can build your house, your castle, your realm
9. You have the option to live as an adventurer or as a normal citizen, both paths rewarded in game
10. You can submit comments, ideas, bugs and the dev team will take those into account in future releases

Why dont I use the Official Server?
1)Its so damn laggy...if I host it locally it will be much faster. I know that the game engine is part of the reason its laggy but isnt the server hosted in Singapore?
Well, not really. Unless you have an amazing computer, almsot all of your slowdowns are not caused by the netowork. If you can\'t even type or if you pause while moving, that\'s a local problem. But if you can type in a few lines before you see them, of if other people are hoppig around, thats network.
There are more than 10 people who can compile it, and one of these threads was about compliing on windoze afterall. And in theory, if it\'s just for your own amusement you could use the officla art/maps, but you\'d want to repalce that before you invite other people.
Also, if you are looking for the devs to get you the files, if you haven\'t heard they are quite busy. They haven\'t even had time to update the parts of the website that haven\'t been changed since MB.

Why do you want to have a private server? I know, lag... But if you have a private server what will you use it for? Doing absolutely nothing all by yourself? There would be no npcs, no crystal spawns, you will only have the podium map so you can\'t even see the rest of the small town (for now) that is hydlaa. Also, people who are codemonkeys (i.e. the people who compile the server for fun) generally run linux. I recommend gentoo.org \'s flavor... not the easiest to install, but having finished that rather enjoyable process you have the know-how to compile the server yourself!
If you run a private server. You will literally be doing nothing, with no one, in a miniature nowhere since you cannot use the release art on anything besides the official server.
I could post you a copy of the executable, but that simply won\'t work. you need to have the dlls and all that windows crap. Plus, you may not have libMySql and even if you do, the plugin will be compilied differently and the linux elf format executable (or the mac version, but I only have that for the CB server) will be as much use to you as \"text.txt\" padded to 3.5 megabytes and renamed psserver.exe
