Dueling is definitely 1-shot-1-kill, but there is skill involved with the timing etc.

I\'m also wondering if a boxing event would be fun, but you\'d have to ban potions etc. and I don\'t know how you\'d enforce that.

General Discussion / PC gladiatorial tourney?
« on: October 19, 2005, 05:06:38 am »
Has anyone ever organized a gladiatorial event with PCs?

We\'ve got this awesome arena, with a couple of empty fighting pits and lots of room for spectators.

(tangent - hats off to whoever designed the arena)

Question - Is there any point to having prizes? Anyone strong enough to win the tourney doesn\'t need cash, or any items I have to offer.

Question - does anyone know how they organize betting on horse races or basketball games or whatever?

Question - would any GM(s) like to participate in this, to referee and discipline any cheaters?

/me braces himself for the inevitable RP -vs- PL flamewar

That doesn\'t exist if your progress is same no matter what you do.
You solely would decide what this progress will be aimed for.

People can abuse that too, i.e. staying logged in all night.

I see your point, but I bet most players don\'t read the forums.

New users are coming on all the time, I doubt they bother to read old posts. At best they read stickied threads.

The comment search is so terrible most people couldn\'t find spoilers if they wanted to. (I\'m not bitching at the project, it\'s not your fault this particular forum software has a crappy search feature)

Why is that, exactly?

Right-click on the corpse. Use the loot button.

Thanks for the quick response.

There are a number of other options- you can edit shortcuts outside of the game, and paste things there. And you can copy from logs of course. I know it\'s not perfect, but it can work.

If there\'s another story time someone should post the details of how to do that in the announce thread :)

Nice to see a sensible URL exists, but the in-game help still points to a message on the forum.

Wish list / copy and paste
« on: October 01, 2005, 02:52:44 am »
I\'d love to be able to paste text into the chat window.

I caught some of the storytelling at the pub tonight, and it was excruciating to watch everyone sloooooooowly type their story/joke/whatever into the chat window.

It would have been nice if they could have prepared their story in advance and just pasted it in at a reasonable speed.

Also, sometimes it would be nice to select and copy text. When rolling up a character, there\'s a message about the naming conventions, giving a 100 character URL to a post on this message board. No-one in their right mind is going to retype that URL, make it copy-able, or make it a hotlink.

The quick fix in would be putting the naming conventions somewhere with a human-readable URL and change the character generation blurb.

The plaza is special because it is centrally located.

Close to the arena entrance, close to the blacksmith, close to the temple, close to the library neighbourhood, close to one of the sewer entrances, close to several trainers.

If I\'m coming into town, I almost have to pass thru the plaza to get to any of the interesting parts of town.

That last one is my reason for keeping the tavern away from the plaza by the way. Not many things are more disrupting to a good conversation or even roleplay than another new person asking help. Don\'t  get me wrong, I don\'t mind helping new players at all most of the time but sometimes it can disturb things.

There\'s a conflict between having a popular bar and an exclusive bar.

Maybe we need 2 bars, a populist dive next to the tavern and keep the existing bar for people who don\'t want to mix with the rabble.

The devs could relocate the bar to a more convenient part of town, i.e. right off the plaza.

It would become an instant hangout.

There\'s lots of room for more info, they could keep their wipe blurb and still have a useful motd.

Wish list / a modest MOTD suggestion
« on: September 21, 2005, 02:36:24 am »
Could the kind admin folks update the MOTD more frequently?

Example #1 -
Be aware that the server is laggy today.

Example #2 -
We\'re playing with weather effects today. You may experience reduced frame rates.

Example #3 -
We\'re having trouble with the NPC server, it is crashing occasionally.

Example #4 -
We\'ve resolved our recent problem with the NPC server!

Thanks!

NPC only gives out 1 quest to carry info to another town. No duplicate messages.

If newbie doesn\'t complete quest, the bulletin board NPC will never give him another quest.

A few messages might be lost, but the vast majority will make it. I\'m sure the pony express lost the occasional letter. Hell, modern post offices sometimes lose mail, but everyone still uses them.

Wish list / the game also needs a fed ex
« on: September 20, 2005, 05:13:26 am »
Establish a bulletin board in each town listing all items for sale, wtb, etc..

Q: Hey, that\'s not realistic, how does this information magically flow between towns?

A: The NPC in charge of the bulletin board will give fed-ex quests to newbies. They\'ll carry little envelopes to the next town, the bulletin board gets updated, and the newbies get a few bucks without having to kill rats.

Practical, \"realistic\", and adds a another tiny facet to the economy.
