Linux Specific Issues / Re: Ubuntu Breezy 64-bit install
« on: April 26, 2006, 02:57:43 am »
ok, it's just that I downloaded through both the filecloud mirror and bittorrent, and both .bin's caused a segfault.

this is what I see

$ ./PlaneShift_CBV0.3.014b.bin

(main.tcl:11597): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib

(main.tcl:11597): Gdk-WARNING **: cannot set locale modifiers

(main.tcl:11597): Gdk-WARNING **: Error converting from UTF-8 to STRING: Conversion from character set 'UTF-8' to 'ISO-8859-1' is not supported

(main.tcl:11597): Gdk-WARNING **: Error converting from UTF-8 to STRING: Conversion from character set 'UTF-8' to 'ISO-8859-1' is not supported
Segmentation fault

does the same as root.

edit: I tried using the --mode xwindow option and it installed!

Linux Specific Issues / Ubuntu Breezy 64-bit install
« on: April 25, 2006, 04:42:04 am »
I stopped playing PS for a while and since have moved off of Gentoo 64-bit and to Ubuntu Breezy 64-bit.  I'm downloading the 3.014b.bin from a mirror and was wondering if it's safe to just execute the bin and install that way?  Will I need to install the fix from http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=22947.0 post 2?  I tried filtering through recent posts about the latest version but it seems most people are upgrading from an older version or not working in Ubuntu on a 64-bit proc.

that\'s how I pronounce your name when I see you about...

Snoin = Snow-in.  I came up with it because I was looking at my Scion mousepad (I drive a Scion tC) and I was eating sno-caps when I made my character...

...but you couldn\'t CALL yourselfs \"thieves\" in the guild name...  I mean...that\'s...just stupid.  \"Oh, look at his guild name.  Don\'t trade with him.\"  That\'s called backfiring.

I\'ve been trying to figure out how to explain PS to most computer-game players.  I come from mostly a console games and FPS gaming background, and PS is the first MMORPG I\'ve really played.  So my opinion of it\'s a lot more generic than most...

In that, here\'s how I explain it to most people:  It\'s a completely free MMORPG that runs on windows, mac, AND linux.  That\'s rare.  It\'s a big reason I play the game, being a linux user that doesn\'t get to play a lot of MMO\'s.  The game itself is moderately based in role playing, but a LARGE portion of the PLAYERS are playing it to role play, and this game is HEAVILY controlled by the players.  The world is by, for, and all about the players.  You will run into people that don\'t role play, but from what I\'ve seen a lot of people that don\'t play to RP will RP when the time calls, myself included.  Right now, in game, the big things to do are go monster slaying, explore, and RP.  This actually is inviting for people like myself that don\'t want to RP much but do want something to do.  The biggest problem for me is when the NPC server is down, but that\'s a lot less frequent lately.

Ultimately I\'ve been recommending this game to a lot of people.  A couple have tried it and so far none are becoming regular players, but that\'s mostly because it\'s so hard to get over that first hill from \"...I can just kill rats?\" to really opening up what you can do.

(in character, named \"Snoin Lansing\" )

...This worries me greatly.  I shall return immediately to the hills of my home.  Although I find myself in the wilderness, or in the town of Hyldaa, regularly, I will never forget where I come from, and will defend it...

(out of character)

ok...when the heck did this happen, and why did no one tell me? ;-)

I had no idea this was going on!  I usually stay away from Akkiao like the plague (it\'s...well...BORING), but I think this is just what\'s needed to bring me back there.

Also, I have noticed many of the rogues in ojaroad are...off track.  I\'m guessing that these rogues will be part of the battle?  What time specifically will this be going on?  All day?...  The servers are down now, I\'m partially expecting it to be going on when I sign back on.  I just want to know because I definately want to fight, but I do have things to do tomorrow, out of the game...

Linux Specific Issues / Random non-zoning crashes
« on: December 19, 2005, 12:04:37 am »
This is REALLY starting to get on my nerves.  Here\'s a list of places I\'ve noticed the client crashes if you\'re...there.

1. Arena stairs to center: you have to walk down backwards to not crash
2. Oja: when entering the warehouse area, right through the door...haven\'t figured out how to fix it
3. Hydlaa to ojaroad: random spot, just after the tunnel...
4. Arena: stairs up to arena rooms, a few other really random spots...spotty arena play, in general I guess.

Being an Enki I have to put up with the oja crash WAY to much.  The Arena one is also bull.  I have to reload and relogin REPEATED and smash my backwards key until it doesn\'t crash...I just don\'t get it.  I don\'t like being punished because I like free operating systems.

edit: added newer stuff to list.  Note: I kinna wanted to make this list mostly to help developers go \"ok, can we recreate this?  Can we help figure out what to do do make sure it doesn\'t?...\"

personally, the overwhelming recent push to really enforce the roleplaying is... a little offensive to me.

I\'m exactly the kind of person you described.  I really only RP when there\'s people around RP\'ing, because I don\'t see the point in offending them by not RP\'ing.  The thing is, this game won\'t go ANYWHERE big with strict RPing rules.  It\'s fine now because the game\'s still under such heavy development, but once it gets to the point where all that\'s left are little bug fixes, expanding the world, and making the servers more stable (AKA: what would be the release time for a normal, paying MMORPG)...you won\'t be able to get many new players.  it really pushes people off to join get in game and suddenly realize \"...I\'ve gotta RP? screw this.\"  I showed PS to a couple of my friends that play WoW and they said \"...it looks like a good time killer, but I can\'t see ever getting into it.\"  It\'s pretty simple.  You won\'t get the AVERAGE gamer.  All you\'re going to get is people that want to RP, and all this work with all this other stuff seems pointless when all it turns into is a bloated chat client with pretty graphics.

I haven\'t tried getting in game yet (gentoo\'s emerging all new KDE apps...and it\'s taking forever...), but the updater and setup are working again.

I\'m still having a \"stutter\" problem though, and I\'ve been trying to figure out the exact cause for some time now but it\'s pretty difficult.

ah, I forgot to mention that i had tried that and I kept getting connection errors.  I completely forgot to keep trying.

I\'m running it now and it was able to connect.  I\'ll post again when it\'s done as to whether problems persist or not.  Thanks for reminding me!

as the title says, I\'ve bee having trouble.

I haven\'t been on PS in a few weeks, so I figured I\'d update and get online.  The update ran, tried running client, was told the whole \"wrong client\" thing.  hit the forums, saw all the stuff about linux not working and to try cvs.  So, to be safe of no \"overwritten garbage\" from the binary installer and cvs, I uninstalled the binary package, and made sure to reemerge (gentoo system) cel and crystalspace.  I gave it a shot, and the files run...just not well.  There\'s no graphics displayed for the updater or setup windows.  So I waited it out and then I installed xordan\'s new files, and I got the same problem.  Here\'s a screenshot:

if I drag the window off screen and drag it back up/around, I get the classic X11 \"can\'t draw window so I\'ll freeze frame the other windows\" over it effect...sort of.  It just jags the window\'s contents around a little.

I read the post under xordan posting the new fixes, and figured it might of been the openal problem.  I deleted those libraries, made sure I had the absolute most recent openal from gentoo, and got nothing new.  Same window drawing error.

To note, the mouse actually was drawing over the window for the CVS version, but it doesn\'t for the xordan fixes.

Am I completely missing some step, or am I seeing a bug?...

Meteor | Me\"te*or |
 n. F. m\'et\'eore, Gr. ?, pl. ? things in
the air, fr. ? high in air, raised off the ground; ? beyond +
?, ?, a suspension or hovering in the air, fr. ? to lift,
   raise up.
   1913 Webster

    1. Any phenomenon or appearance in the atmosphere, as clouds,
      rain, hail, snow, etc.
      1913 Webster

Hail, an ordinary meteor.             --Bp. Hall.
      1913 Webster

   2. Specif.: A transient luminous body or appearance seen in
the atmosphere, or in a more elevated region.
      1913 Webster

            The vaulty top of heaven
Figured quite o\'er with burning meteors. --Shak.
      1913 Webster

   3. A mass of stone or other substance which sometimes falls
to the earth from space beyond the moon, burning up from
atomospheric friction and creating a brilliant but usually
very brief trail of light in the atmosphere; also called a
      shooting star.
      PJC

Note: The term is especially applied to fireballs, and the
masses of stone or other substances which sometimes
fall to the earth; also to shooting stars and to ignes
fatui. Meteors are often classed as: aerial meteors,
winds, tornadoes, etc.; aqueous meteors, rain, hail,
snow, dew, etc.; luminous meteors, rainbows, halos,
etc.; and igneous meteors, lightning, shooting stars,
         and the like.
         1913 Webster

I meant meteor\'s in this sense.  It wasn\'t until more recently in history that meteors became to mean almost exclusively \"rocks from space.\"  I\'m a bit of a linguist, so I\'m quite confident in this.  I was using hail in my comment as an example of the number of things that are technically considered meteors.

the conversation basicly is a gealous husband who thinks his wife might be cheating on him at any moment.

Personally, if I saw this happening on PS...I\'d log off as fast as possible.  Some people take things way to seriously, and if someone ACTUALLY talked like that in game in all seriousness, I\'d probably stop playing PS altogether...

Now if it\'s just someone joking around...maybe if someone decided to use PS for a Machinima series (anyone thought about this yet?), I\'d say \"so...ok...I\'m going to the arena now...\"
