Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: steel stock vs metallurgy
« on: August 23, 2007, 01:21:22 pm »
Of course you can practice metallurgy from zero skill - though you can't expect to be able to start by making steel right away. IIRC you need at least a skill of five (hope this doesn't count as a spoiler). You might try starting by smelting iron first....

Sure, you can just ask someone to smelt the two steel stock if all you want to do is finish the quest. If you wish to use the skills you gain by finishing the quest however (I'm guessing this IS the quest you get from one of the smiths, right?), chances are, you'll need metallurgy to smelt your raw materials anyway.

So spend quite some time training you metallurgy until you can complete your quest or ask someone for help so you can finish your quest now and train your skills later - the choice is yours...

Oh - and on a side note, you might wish to train your strength sometime if you decide to stay in this business - certain items require quite a lot of steel...

General Discussion / Re: Religion.

Well, I play a Dwarf and while my character knows well about Talad and Laanx and respects them both (Laanx for exploring the Stone Labyrinths and Talad for the shaping of the stone - both good Dwarven activities), he is not really religious for two main reasons:

1) He has not truly experienced any greater influence on his life or Yliakum as it is today from either of the gods and
2) When you're at work deep down in a mine and you suddenly hear that certain ominous creaking .. well, that is definitely NOT the best time to fall down on your knees and pray but rather to run like hell! And once you've made it safely out, there's no real need to thank the gods, as long as you haven't seen some miraculous hand holding up the shaft as you zoom by in any case. A real Dwarf knows that the ones to truly thank are the shorers, the mine planners, the geologists,...

(Yes, my character can be horribly realistic and literal-minded at times, possibly marking himself up as a viable target if the gods ever catch on to him...  ;D)

Strange - your system is almost exactly the same as the one I was using little more than a year ago - and it ran PS without a problem.

You say that Win98 prevents you from using the -fullbright command - how exactly does it do that? If I remember correctly, I even had an additional shortcut on my desktop with just that command...

Now, this may just be a wild hunch, but have you tried relighting the maps you have problems with? Can take a long time but did the trick for me when I first started playing.

Oh, and you're wrong if you think everyone is playing the game using -fullbright. In fact, I think it would be safe to say that most of us don't, as it robs PS of quite a lot of its atmosphere - especially the DR. IMHO, -fullbright should serve only as a last resort when everything else you've tried has failed.

This message usually appears when an installer either produces an error, quits unexpectedly or is interrupted by the user.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling PS? Does the same error appear? If so, you might want to check if the download is not corrupted. Download the checksum tool on the download page and see if the checksum matches. If it doesn't, you should download PS again.

I have the same version (Vista ultimate x64) and did not encounter the problems you describe. So it ought to be "just you"  ;D

First, you did notice that you can run the game with a -fullbright option, didn't you? Makes it easier by far to find your way around dark places such as the DR. Second, people's urge to help you depends quite a lot on how you ask them. Remember, this is a roleplaying game. So don't shout and if possible, don't use /tells. Also, do NOT use 1337-5P34K. Don't lose your patience, someone will be bound to help you sooner or later, in fact, most people will gladly help you, if you ask them nicely IC, even if there IS the occasional black sheep. If all else fails, try simply following someone.

True, the DR is somewhat less populated since dying from falling is not as easy as it used to be *shudders at the thought of slipping 3 feet and suddenly waking up in the DR*, however, in my experience there's almost always someone around who's making a beeline for the exit, although lately some people seem to die on purpose to enter the DR for *ahem* other reasons.

Again, don't give up and don't lose your patience. You'll see that getting out is only hard the first one or two times.

Which torrent client are you using? I just checked using Azureus and the download starts immediately. Is there an error message? If yes, what does it say?

Have you made sure you have enough free space on you disk? PS needs at least 240 MB for the download alone.

Alternatively, you could try one of the direct download links on the downloads page.

Cheers!

That's a well-known issue. When you get that message, it means that the server controlling the NPCs is currently down. It usually only takes a couple of minutes to restart...

Please try to do a search on the forums before you post next time, as this questions crops up again and again. Also, please read the documentation, as this issue is clearly mentioned in the FAQ on the main site.

Cheerio and give my regards to the rats   :P

Been running PS on a newly setup Vista-PC (Vista Ultimate X64, 4 GB RAM, GF 8800 GTS) for a few days now without any major issues (except for the occasional missing texture or texture-wiping, which I got on my old system, too).

From what I gather, most problems when using 3D-applications are either hardware- or driver-related.

From my experience, Vista needs at least 2 GB RAM to get it to run stable and fluently when using RAM-intensive software. Even more so when you are using an on-board graphics controller using shared memory.

You should check the following points if you get an error:

1) Check you drivers (graphics and sound) for available updates. Many problems arise from using either old or wrong drivers (i.e. x64 drivers for an x86 system or vice versa) so be sure to get the right drivers for the OS-version you're running.
2) Make sure you have sufficient RAM and the timings and voltage are set correctly in the BIOS. My system would crash frequently at first, until I noticed that the RAM was addressed using (wrong) default parameters.
3) Check your graphics card and make sure it is supported by PS. I've also heard reports of strange behavior in 3d-games when using an on-board graphics card. See if you can borrow an old (supported) card from a friend, install it (don't forget to disable the on-board controller though) and check if problems persist.
4) Check your graphics settings both in PS-setup and in the control panel of your graphics card. Make sure those are set to the correct resolution, try running PS at default settings. Also, both ATI an NVIDIA allow you to change the 3D-settings on a per-game basis. Try fiddling with those.
5) Have you run the updater? If you did and it gave you an error, you might try uninstalling PS and reinstalling from the latest package, then run PS without running the updater first.
6) Make a note of the type of error you experience and check if it is reproducable. Write down any error messages you get and post your findings here - chances are, someone here can help you.

Good luck!
