Ok I know I\'m resurrecting older threads here but I am new to the boards so its my first chance to comment =)

I like the deed based karma system type idea. Like say old lady NPC asks you to deliver a note to her daughter. You tell her to screw off and you lose good karma points, you do  take and deliver the message you get good karma points. And so on up the line to say defeating the cave rats infesting the east side of level three and returning them to the magistrate up to defeating the Slime dragon eating the water people\'s children. ( yes I dont have all my races and monsters memorized yet hehe)

I think it would also be neat to carry the write your own description on step farther by making yourself a real part of your town. Not NPC guilds per say but maybe some mix and match beginning points like you could work for the law of one level and secretly be working for another faction as well. You could accomplish this by some menial begiinning tasks and then write up your backstory as to why you associate with the NPC groups that you do.  I dunno my idea is rather unfinished as well. ;)

That sounds like the karma system from UO. It works well enough, but all I ever see it do is change your titlee from something like \"Good Samaritan\" to \"Lord Nice\". If there were perks to being good or evil, then people would actually note that you are kind and helpful and not think things like \"Hey look, theres a nice guy, lets kill him!\" Otherwise the task=karma system works well.

Oh yeah I guess I skipped that bit of it.  It would be pointless without some sort of benefit like better merchant prices and access to higher task assignments etc.

That would be cool. Maybe if you were nice and helpful enough they might even give you a 2 for 1 deal. Think you might be on to something. While evil merchants would do the same for evil people. Still I think that evil people would get differant armour than the good.

Yeah, and there is NPC reaction\'s of course. But the point to the karma system is you have to have uber l337 mad skillz  :D to get the higher titles. It doesn\'t just show how nice or bad you are.
If you saw someone with 145 karma and the champion title would you go picking a fight with them. Also it helps when applying for guilds. An evil guild could tell a spy from the good guild by seeing how much positive karma they have.

Oh yeah. That would make things interesting to see the Hannibal Lector fan club fight, say, The Brotherhood of Goodly Things. Maybe if your evil the guards could hassle you and stuff, while the good guys get pulled over by thieves while evil people dont.
