Well you will need a pic. editor to make yourself a logo. I use photoshop 7.0 but its a little expensive
I think theres a free one tha many people use around here but I dont know what its called. There are many things you need to know before you can actually make some of the better stuff you see. Try searching google for an online tutorial of the program you use so you can learn a little about it. The main thing youd want to do is stick in a cool looking picture and make it look cooler. The stuff icefalcon make ,though, I dont think he uses pictures. You should try playing with filters, colors, layers, and text. Icefalcon is really good with making logos though so dont expect to be as good as him any time soon. You could pay him (ps mny) to make you a logo for you, which is probably what I reccomend. If you didnt know he leads a guild (that if you pay) will do almost anything
