Honor
« on: December 11, 2004, 08:12:39 pm »
So I was thinking about a honor system for ps.  A person who kills a lot of evil aligned monsters would turn good and vice versa.  Evil monsters could be like bugs, cyclopses, etc. And good monsters could be bears, birds, etc. And as one person killed more of \"the enemy\" they would gather more honor for their side. Now aside from from the normal magic system, there could be honor reqs that if you reached a certain honor you would get a \"good\" or \"evil\" skill.  An evil mage and a good mage should have their differences if you ask me. One should have some type of skills and another should have another kind. Even if they both studied the same type of magic. I think this would add a lot into the rp aspect of ps having people  be good or evil instead of just saying it.  And in the battle arena players could also gain honor from killing the opposite honor. And ofcourse the honor skills would be given to all people with that honor, not only mages. (since there are no classes in ps)
This could also make good vs evil battles come true. Imagine hundreads of people rushing at eachother :)...

I got this idea from a game called Redmoon (which is only in english on private servers) and from knights of the old republic.

PS, visual differences could also be really cool. But are not nessicary and could be added much later.

Guess, .. as i read trough your post I thought of KOTOR.

Maybe different solutions for Quests should give honor points
I want to be a flame, to crumble to ash, but never ever burnt.

I want to rise higher, rise up to the heavens, but sink, just sink down deeper and deeper into nothing,

I want to be an angel, a chosen, a devil, but I am just a creature that ever wants what it wont get.

eh.. do you have good monsters?
If a monster is good it isn\'t a monster right?

and btw it would be better to have \"Reputation\" or something. And maybe even \"Respect\" Respect when you kill people no matter if they are good or bad. People will just become scared of you. And reputation when you kill alot of evil/bad people like criminals and monsters. When you die you\'ll lose both of \'m.

With a good reputation NPC shops might let you pay less for their goods, and with a bad reputation they might let you pay more or something. And you wont be able to enter specific places with not enough reputation. On the other hand when you earn alot of respect people might become scared so guards could let you go trough on some places.

By monsters, I think he meant generally any NPCs. I like this idea, but it is a hard system to balance. You need twice as many creatures, and they need to have similar statistics so that people of different alignments can level at the same pace.

It\'s alot more work for the devs, who are already stretched to do a massive amount of work in not only coding the game, but creating all the content aswell. Remember that this is a very small development team. If this is an idea they take to, don\'t expect it to be implemented for a very long time to come.

What is good and what is evil??
You can\'t decide for the players if they\'re good or bad by how they kill.

A reputation system would be better, but not if it labels your alignment.

haven\'t looked at the source code, but guess there\'s just a NPC/monster class. Adding 1 boolean value called evil that could be true or false isn\'t that much of a work. Than all creatures can either be good or evil. Just change the messages for NPC, like evil will say bad things etc. and evil might attack and good won\'t. When you kill someone there should be an if statement to check if he\'s good or evil:

if (evil == true)
{
honor += 1;
}

etc. Shouldnt be that much work I think :/

A honor system based on bashing monsters doesn\'t make much sense to me. It isn\'t something that should be based on what monsters you kill.

Toadhead, PS has no calculated alignments, you can decide yourself who you want to be and the alignment you want. So you can\'t make a computer check it.

Him reminds me of the mud Achaea.  In Achaea there are good, evil and neutral creatures (some more strongly aligned than others), when you kill a good creature you get more evil and vice-versa.  Your alignment was then used to calculate the effectiveness of some attacks and the like.

Actually this idea reminds me a bit of Black & White....

I dont think you really know what honor is.
And getting reputation points for killing monsters is kind of pointless because just imagine how many monsters you are going to have killed after a few months.

\"Evil\" people probably will still kill evil monsters. that means they will be \"good\" when there actualy not. I ask you this, isen\'t evil just someone else\'s version of good?

I agree.

For example, in Rubies of Eventide, if you kill a goblin, your reputation with the goblins goes down and your reputation with the kabolds goes up because the goblins and kabolds are at war. Something like that...

Hey that would be cool to :)
And good/evil monsters would mean like working for good causes or working to kill inocent people.

Who gets to decide who is good or evil? No, we should leave good and evil out of the whole deal and just have different factions. That way, you can decide who is good and who is evil.
