Illustrated Guide

I made an illustrated guide to making PlaneShift run on Mac OS X 10.3, at the request of Napsto15. Don\'t know if it will help anyone, but here:

MAC Version
« Reply #106 on: January 17, 2005, 11:37:09 pm »
I downloaded the game a week ago, I can\'t find what everyone is talking about, the file isn\'t on my computer.

Is there a setup file for the game, cos I\'d like to play it but it\'s not working.  Anyone help.  I\'m new to macs too, so bear with me.

Posted info (including a sorta-layman\'s fix) in another thread about the death realm problem... it\'s a lightmap issue.

strange video duplication problem
« Reply #108 on: January 18, 2005, 02:34:39 am »
Hello, I\'m a familiar MAC and Unix user, but new to Planeshift.  I am having a strange video duplication problem trying to run Planeshift on my mac, that I haven\'t seen anyone else talk about.  First, my specs - I am running on a 700 MHz G3 iBook (could the G3 be a problem?), with 640MB of memory, running OS X 10.3.7.  I copied the file into /usr/local/lib as mentioned in this thread, no problem there.

The problem - When I start up the app, the window opens, and then divides in 2, down the center.  It then seems to put a distorted copy of my dock menu in each one, and then divides each of those in half, and then the top half gets divided in half again, etc.  Until along the top, there are many micro-copies of my screen.  Each little window has a copy of the loading bar, the game menu, and my mouse moves 20+ pointers around.  I put a screenshot online -  http://hikenbike.net/photos/temp/planeshift-screen.jpg

Any thoughts?  If there is any more information that would be helpful, just let me know.  I am looking forward to playing!  Thanks for your efforts developing a free MMORPG!  Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Erin

Wow, not sure if the G3 is the problem, but it is highly likely that the video hardware in the iBook is having a tough time.  I don\'t really have any similar hardware to test on, so I\'m not sure if I can help you there.

That said, if your graphics hardware is any worse than mine (32MB geforce2MX) it\'ll suck, even if it does run.

And I mean Really. Suck.  Badly.

Sorry :/

EDIT: The problem with the invisible toolbar seems to not be present when you launch psclient from the command line.  I will try to fix the problem this week, but I\'ll have to find out how deeply-entrenched it is.

Thanks,
Daniel

It should be a Radeon Mobility with 16 Mb of VRAM (it\'s a bit worse than your 2MX).

Really? Can you explain us how to launch the game this way?

To launch from the command line, you need to be able to launch the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and use the \"cd\" command to get yourself into your planeshift folder.  For instance, if it was in Applications, I\'d type this: cd /Applications/Planeshift3D/

And then:
./psclient.app/Contents/MacOS/psclient

I have now fixed the cause of this problem in CVS, so it shouldn\'t be a problem next time.  Now to fix the updater...

Oh, so it is this simple, no parameters ... nice, thanks :)

Great news, I can\'t wait to try the next build.

That \'s great, i could get the toolbar with the command line !

More than that, I tried it with the updater and got it to work !!!
it downloaded more than 11 MB of new files and stuff.

But the bad part is :
psclient and updater don\'t launch with double click anymore (needs the commandline)
psclient unexpectly quits now, it says (sorry if it s too long, its for devs) :

SCF_WARNING: class crystalspace.graphics3d.opengl (from /Games/PlaneShift 3D/updater.app/Contents/Resources/glrender3d.csplugin) has already been registered in the same context `app\' (in /Games/PlaneShift 3D/updater.app/Contents/Resources/gl3d.csplugin)

I can\'t connect to laanx with psclient (maybe a config problem, since my mail address and pass were not remenbered).

I think i messed up with something, so i ll reinstall the previous version and try again : but i got it to work !

This sounds interesting ... so those pesty bugs weren\'t that serious  ...

I\'d like to submit a bug that has occured yesterday:

I\'ve tried to combat a monster in the sewer and it killed me (these are my first sessions, I\'ve got no weapons nor trias and yesterday I wasn\'t able to find \"spare\" rats); once respawned in the death realm, my character got caught behind a handrail and there was no way to move from that position (then a player told me to use the /spawn something command to exit from the death realm).

I\'m not even sure what version of the client/updater is loaded on the updater server, so running the updater is quite likely to break stuff.  Sorry.

There are still a few places to get stuck (but these affect everyone) and some black areas that only affect mac users.  I\'m going to find out what the cause of this is.  The fact that using a tool to relight the levels manually fixes it gives me some hints...

Thanks!

/dequip Not working on Mac Client?
« Reply #116 on: January 19, 2005, 02:05:20 am »
Can\'t get this \"Shortcut\" functionality to work.

Don\'t know if you know about or not, just wanted to let you know.

Everytime I try, I crash the client.  I could be doing it wrong too.  Below is the command I\'m using:

/dequip Small_Battle_Axe

Also the command didn\'t work from the Communication window either.

Don\'t take the time to answer me, this just FYI.  If I\'m using the wrong command, I\'ll figure it out.

I guess that explains those ugly bus errors I got

Anyway the meaning of my post was just to show the updater could work :
Without the command line, it  seems to stop after downloading the repos.zip file, that doesn\'t unzip when double-clicked and show an alert \"not permitted\" (but it can still be opened with stuffit expander). But there is no problem when launched from terminal.....

Maybe this is a bad permission/authorization problem ?? something you can only do when logged as user in the terminal, because the updater application alone has not the necessary authorizations.

I don\'t know if it might help you fix the bug....(I hope it is already fixed !)    :)

doesn\'t work with me either

Yes, I\'ve noticed that if you run the updater once from the terminal, it fails whenever you try it again.  Also, I noticed that for me, if the buttons on the top appear by running psclient in the terminal, the buttons on the bottom of the communications screen start to fail

Also, when \"exchanging\", I cannot remove things.

I am also told I have been invisible.

Something there is that will not tolerate Mac users having buttons.

curioser and curioser...

Right, another problem with me.  Apparantly I\'m \'not running the correct version of PlaneShift\' to access the laanx server.  Funny, as I was only on it an hour or so ago.  I presume there\'s been an update, but without my updater working I won\'t be able to get into the game- and I\'m not downloading another 270MB!
