maple story http://www.mapleglobal.com is an 2d mmorpg.  i think they did a good job of making it 2d platform.

it needs one thing.  beauty.

then a whole lotta programming, and graphics.

but vast beautifulll lands like in  s tar  w ars  g allexies, ohh and freedom of niceness and hmmm.

i used to play cystal blue for hours and hours and hours just soaking up the atmosphere.

i havent ever really played mb.

good luck
in game name : davoid

Krayn, not to mention that you\'ll need MONEY for SERVERS and various other things, like a domain name and probably advertising.  Not to mention that the MM part of the MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer, which can get rather expensive to deal with.  If you really, really wanted you you could start off learing on/with something a bit less demanding on resources, like a MUD or something similar to help get you ideas into a testable world and establish a player base. I\'m actually reading a fascinating book on MU* in general. Its called \"Designing Virtual Worlds\" and it was written by the co-creator of one of the first MUDs (MUD1, and MUD2) Richard Bartle.  I haven\'t gotten far into the book, I\'ll admit, but I would recommend reading this or one of the other books on this topic before beginning such an arduous project. I actually know someone who had their own ideas and wanted to create an MMORPG but so far they\'ve failed miserably.

Yeah thats why i am making a ORPG of about 10-15 players that can be hosted from my PC with my broadband connection :) servers costs to much O.o

well iam getting through that C++ for gaming book.. c++ is mildy confusing but still its a very easy to learn book :) sprite making is the hard part.. but 2D still seems the easiest option

here is my story. Ahem

There once were two shards. One a dark shard, and other a light shard.  the light shard was worthless so if you touched it would prove you were fit for good because greed didnt get you.  The dark shard is eveil because it lures you into greed then when you touch it you get surrounded by darkness. Ok thats description of how you choose form good ro evil neutural is if you dont even bother :)

There were to brothers, haith, and delit they were friends until haith\'s greed got in the way eventually he stole the sacrid stone of darkness. Delit told him not too, But he didnt listen so to this day the dark stone is amde out of haith because it sucked out his soul including all else that touch it. The lightstone tests you to see if you are worthy to be on the good side if not ur automatically in neuteral.

ummmm O.o ever get the fealing your not being listened to.. where the conflict? i found NONE (i mean a hint of man v. man but..) of the three conflicts (once again[/b] man v. man man v. himself and man v. power greater then himself). I will grant you it is original! just not that great XD (sorry :/ ) Why not have everybody start neutral as the do when their born then have their actions deem them good or evil? (forgive if i propose something to radical :P )

Well all in all re-read my advice and keep working on it :)

try adding races ad thier interactions.. in a mmo there doesnt need to be much backstory.. REALLY if the game is good then the players actions in a beta test would make a realistic and good enough backstory (and since its in beta it is from the \"past\")

I\'ve seen so many people here trying desperatedly to discourage you, or even dropping some poison dripping irony here and there.
But nonetheless, you ignored everyone of them, ignored their irony, and kept on responding politely.

You definitely have style, and I hope you have fun with this thread.
Everyone should make their own MMORPG

first off its you not u and secondly what did i just get done saying? O.o (maybe you need a lil work in common sense as well :P ?)

i have found stories are hard when you dont have anything to tie then together.. why not make up a few locations races and items then think up a story for them.. that always works well as a story creation method ;)

No one is trying to discourage you kiddo, they\'re just telling you the facts.
And saying that phrase over and over, will not help you making a game. You\'re really good? Show us some work, impress us.
Don\'t repeat yourself with words such those ...

I propose closing this thread, because continuing it seems useless, and it has no point.

Yes, many people want to do a game, but they kinda have no knowledge in any area necessary for \"building\" one.

And this thread trust me, is not a good example for them.

Also, your \"factions\" will resume to that \"good vs evil\" fight as well, because they\'ll have different alignments. You have to large your views, and find an unique story ;)

And again, I vote for closing this thread.

Thats a good arguement.. perhaps somebody could make a specific game creation thread and have it stickied somewhere... and Krayn try http://www.gamedev.net :) they have a lot f stuff you can read and learn from ;)

anywhay i think all that needs to be said has been said.. i agree with Annah

EDIT: and factions wont resume the evil v. good fight.. i mean i\'ve seen factions fight in games that where just out to serve themselves.. not a banner of good or evil.. now some factions will but most are just out to help themselves not hurt others (or so ive seen)

EDIT2: also krayn specificaly read http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/topic.asp?topic_id=295189 it has oodles of info for ya :)
