Where Do You Mine?
« on: April 19, 2005, 03:43:03 pm »
Well I found out where to mine thanks to a cat guy. but people need to make these mining spots more... visual. Like in WoW they have a little mine sense. You activate it and you can see mining locations on the mini map. also you should be able no just right click on a mining spot and it will tell you what minerals it holds, or might hold. So that way we wont have to type /dig gold. I meen what if we dont know anyother mineral in the game? We should just be able to mine and get random materials.

Also thank you cat guy. Im Rox by the way.
I\'m Rox the Kran.

I like the idea of just mining.  It would be nice to find a crystal or something rare once in a while.  I am not out to get rich in PS, I just want enough to get by without \"starving\".

Yes it could be nice to get some kind of \"prospect\" ability in the game, or just some kind of graphic that tells you that there are minerals in this rock. But I think that one should have some skills in mining or alchemy to tell which kind of material it is. But the game is still under construction, and well if  I remember right someone said that much of the system PS has now, won\'t be in the future or even get more advanced.

sounds alot like R*nescape, and since PS is trying to be as original as possible, they shouldn\'t copy things from other games :).
And crystals will probably be added in the game. How? no idea

Well, by mining Platinum you could get by without \"starving\"

You certainly won\'t starve if you mind platinum, but my old information tells me that getting it in the first place is killer for most people.
I like taking things literally, going overboard is fun! Now... why do I keep getting odd looks?

Finding a mining place is a pain in the adendum. Can you give some pointers to where we can find different stuff?
I hate to walk around and do some random /dig foobar...

I\'d guess you\'re wrong. To me it looks as if they just put down some ore from the char\'s inventory.
At least it looks this way when a lump of gold ore is on the ground... And if you see ore that way you only have to pick it up.

Hmmm.... *thinking* On the other hand this could signifiy that sometimes ore just pops up in areas where you could dig for it. IMHO that would be a great step in the right direction!

Devs? Any comment to that?

Maybe a good idea would be to add a spell that?s give you a special vision for some time to see the ores that are available to mine.

A way that this could work is that the color of the area that contains ores has a different color when the spell is active.

You can make the efficiency of the spell depended on your level of mining skill.

Just an idea.

Maybe a spell aswell, but they should add a /prospect command or similar. Mining skills determine the accuracy of the information you can get using it (low mining, it\'s uninformative or inaccurate).

That screenshot is old. It was put up before CB was released. I think they just had all ores in one place to make testing easier, nothing more. You can see that the GUI wasn\'t even finished by that time.

As for finding the mining locations: Why don\'t you just ask ingame? I\'d be very surprised if there wasn\'t anyone who knows and tells or even shows it to you. Just RP it. 8)

The mining / prospecting skill would be similar to the tracking skill, so if we\'ll have that, we can have prospection as well, I guess. That\'s probably easier than creating a consistent texture / terrain-topology -based system that the player can use.

Ok, some comments are due :)

1. Why use a spell if you have a skill? IMO a prospect spell is a very good idea. Albeit it shouldn\'t be needed to prospect but only offer another way of doing so.

2. Having a /prospect command would force me to walk around using the command over and over again which makes no sense to me. I think it should be a toggle like running.

Another suggestion towards spell based mining: Maybe one can use skill to find surface ore / resources and a spell to detect burried resources which have to excavated?
But of course in a real world there are cues pointing towards burried resoures like unearthed sample, special kinds of ground etc...

I think it should be possible to spot minable places (rock) If you have equipped a pickaxe the pointer should turn into a pickaxe over those places. with rightclick you can choose between mine and prospect.
Minable places not contains ore for certain. (thats what prospect is for) This would also solve the problem how to put the mining in the GUI.

:( Yes, this thread is old and dusty... (cough) -- It was just the best matching, according to the search query I used.

Still, it gets again more interesting, since there is so much landscape now to discover.

A "/prospect" command is one way to signalise the probability to dig successful. But I also hope for simpler ways to identify promising areas. This could include some fauna and flora. On one hand, there could be plants (like flowers) which are reported to grow preferably near some ore (like iron), a specific texture overlay (is it possible to alter its opacity per player's mining skill level?), or even creatures near some ore area (like Consumers which are reported to be magically active).

But relying on "leaked information" - which sounds almost like "corrupt developers" ;) - is surely not the optimal option.

kinda glad this dead thread got pulled outa the dust piles--

i've thought for a while that it would be nice to get a message when not successful mining such as "You got nothing", out of system window. Just to make it easier to chat & use a shortcut for those like me who suck at timing & knowing when to dig again.

Ok firstly that idea of a visual marker that is somehow justified in game seems sweet-- flowers for some kind of ore or such, I like the idea of having a visual marker for an area more likely to hold precious minerals, very realistic & linear idea..

later in the game diggng underwater could get clay for pottery skill, who knows...

I would really like if there were a way that random items could be dug in any normal dirt... like looting , but you'd never find apples or bread or meat in the dirt... bones, teeth, claws, weapons, books, items, worthless minerals, armor, tools, trias, maybe even glyphs... but the items would be much less likely to get in more heavy traffic areas where someone would likely find it before dirt would cover it...

And i guess it would be silly to be able to dig indoors & take away wood chips, shingles, and marble chunks... but i still think it would rock. [pun]

but opening possibility for digging in what looks like good farming land & seeing "You were successful. You got a radish" or carrot or potatoe seems like fun to rp farmer type professions, even without images for potatoes etc...

Following the idea of just being able to dig from any viable looking terrain, maybe usually all you get is a rock weighing 0.1 worth 0 trias, essentially like a pile of dust... this could even be what is dug up when you fail... hopefully it wouldn't encourage littering... but i suppose thats an unrealistic hope..unless these could perhaps be crafted into crude melee weapons...

Just rambly thoughts n ideas
