In-Game minnigames
« on: October 12, 2005, 04:00:50 am »
--)I think it would be cool to have minigames available to people in PS, such as chess, checkers ect. The games wouldn\'t necessarily have to have a set of rules. What I mean is it wouldn\'t have to be programmed into the game that castleing out of check is an illeagal move, or how the pieces move and such. All you would need is the pieces and the ability to move them on a board. The people playing could regulate the moves, or even spectators. Eventually you could have guild sponsered tournaments for money or items.

--)Haveing minigames like chess would heighten the level of enjoyment, and as far as I know it isn\'t being done by any other mmorpgs. It would make PlaneShift more unique and also create a bridge from high level characters to low level. In order to keep with the theme, you could modify the games or appearance of the pieces. You could even create an entirely new game solely for planeshift, and you could give an in-game history too...

it has been hacked at before...  and i have been beaten to the punch.

it has been tackled in other rpgs (the later ffs). and bringing in rl games, well not quite creative.

the trick is developing the new mini game(s). a non-trivial task. but whoever tackles it well... much fame and glory.
may laanx frighten the shadow from my path.
hardly because the shadow built the lexx.
the shadow will frighten laanx from my path.

There is the dice rolling option which could be played with....you can make the dice as many sided as you\'d like. :)

Guess I\'m bringing this topic back from the dead...

I\'ve been tinkering with this for awhile now.  It is similar to the card game from final fantasy, hopefully not too similar.
In my version the board can have either a  9 or 16  stone board for 2 players or the 9 stone board and up to 4 players on the 16 stone board.
Each player chooses 7 stones from their stock for a 9 stone board or 11 stones for a 16 stone board and two are  randomly disguarded.
Each stone has 4 numbers- higher # flips and claims lower numbered stone.
Getting 3 in a row straight or angled gives all three stones a +1 to all numbers.
Some have Elements attached-and this gives them higher numbers vers. diff. elements and plain stones.
After all the spaces have been filled the winner can either take one stone from each opponent(s), take all, take none, or randomly take 2 on a 1 player game or take 3 random stones on a 3-4 player game.  The rules/amount to be won or lost is determined when game is accepted by all players.

Anyway that\'s the basics so far, I\'m not sure how difficult it would be to actually make playable ingame, I\'m clueless when it comes to actually making it work.  But it works on my paper version.
I\'ve got ideas for a couple other smaller and more confusing games, but this one\'s the most developed.

My main reason for wanting some type of minigame is that I don\'t talk to people alot...I\'m shy I guess. But some type of game would be a good icebreaker and would lead to alot more people online talking and meeting people.

Here\'s the example photoshop idea I made this morning...

There\'s always dice to throw...maybe get sort of a blackjack with 11 sided die game going.  we just need some standard rules everyone knows.
and working on existing problems is more important than making a minigame that could introduce new ones.

Hmm... There were some works on some kind of a card game... Wonder if it got anywhere.
And yeah, umm... just put \"minigames\" in a search function...

I like this idea as well. It is not new, as Everquest has a Tetris style game called Gems, and when I played Might and Magic there was a card game you could play in taverns.

There was even a Quest involved in M&M with the card game, where you had to win a game in each tavern in the game. It made you visit every zone to find the taverns.

While haveing Chess, or my preference, Go, in the game, it would be  nightmare to code it as a board visible to everyone. Coding the pieces as individual objects would be a huge undertaking.

I think it would have to be almost like an instanced zone. The game board would take up the full screen of the players and observers alike.

You could probably make a camera, that would work just like first person one, only that it would keep turning towards object you have selected. It would most likely make it much easier to observe the board.

I can see that making the board and the pieces visible, but to allow everyone in the room to see the game the pieces will have to be individually coded as objects moveable by the players. To avoid greifing, the objects would have to be locked to the players involved in the game, otherwise annoying types would move pieces in the middle of games (you KNOW they will). Having a window pop-up would allow that, I believe, easier than keeping the objects in the open.

I don\'t really know, I am not a programmer. But I made the suggestion and am not trying to make the developers job impossible.

Well it would be possible to block other people out of it in same way as they are blocked out of duels and such.

Anyway, about Lepall\'s idea:

I don\'t think any sort of collactable game will appear in Planeshift. Due to law cases that might appear in connection with Magic the Gathering\'s Planeshift expansion.
