A question to project developers.

Do You mind development of private servers from scratch to be used with Your game client?

I didn\'t notice anything about that matter, so I decided to ask just to be sure :)

Greetings,

Private servers are allowed pretty much only for private, testing purposes. Running your own PlaneShift server for others to frolic in is a rather large no-no, as the world was never meant to be nor should ever be split :)

Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

If you want to create your own game you can surely use our client/server as long as you provide your own content.  Check out http://www.reflex.lth.se/culture/annelov/ which a completly different system using PlaneShift\'s code base.

However, we would take exception if your client used the same maps and client models.

What I wanted was coding open-source server software (or if You like it more, it would be closed-source, with You having access to it). I haven\'t had a chance to check that game out yet, so I\'m not arguing yet, or anything, I\'ll post more as I get more feeling about that game, which should happen pretty soon.

btw. Thanks for really fast reply :)

Here you can find all the PlaneShift Official Servers. The PlaneShift Client can be used ONLY with those servers. Read the client license for more details.

Hello,

I haven\'t actually understood what you have in mind.
You want to create \"another\" game, or you want to develop features or fix bugs for Planeshift itself?

I don\'t really know how to explain it in other words... I just wanted to create open-source server software for that game. (and set up one, little in my town)

The code is open source already - which would be the change?

Do you want to create a public server ?

It wasn\'t really a decision to do something yet, I was just getting info, but I wanted to code yet another open-source server from scratch (it would differ from original one pretyt much I guess), and then possibly set up a local server for me, me friends and posisbly some others. (This software could be used by anybody else as well)

Aha, so you want to code another MMORPG based on Planeshift engine.
Why would you like to let PS team have an a special access on that, then?

I understand what is meant here..  Current PS game goes like so

PSteams server softwer and PSteams Client Software - client connects to server.  CatVir wants to use the client from PS, but write her own server from scratch which the PSclient could connect to.  I\'m not sure why but either she doesn\'t know that the serversoftware is free and opesource, or she doesnt like it and wants to make her own - the thing that people are mising is that she wants to use the psclient we use but with a different server. - completely different server.

I may be completly wrong here, but I think CatVir doesn\'t really know what he/she is asking here.

Why would one waste time to make a server from scratch to connect to an ever-changing psclient, if one has to \"waste\" a lot of time making art and setting (database content) for it in the first place ?

Because that\'s the main thing here: One can\'t use the PS art publicly. And mirroring the current Planeshift setting is very hard and timeconsuming to an outsider (even for a knowledgeable addicted player).

I think CatVir should first understand how Planeshift works, because most certainly it would start by working on an alternate (maybe even open) set of art and setting for chosen freezed version of psserver+psclient.

Only after that, should he/she deal with that version tweaking. Maybe catching up with current cvs version, maybe starting a Planeshift codebase fork... whatever.

It\'s simply a challenge for me, I want to check if I have enough skills, and then, optionally, it would be a pleasure to run a private server.

It\'s your time...
Anyone can run his own private server, but without a goal, it gets boring after a few minutes (I didn\'t see the new npcroom yet, maybe it\'s an addictive sector :D )

Both our server and client code are truly open source, but you would definitely need to come up with some basic art/maps if you want to run a private server, whether it\'s ours or your own.
