Tipoffs and word-of-mouth could work for some espianage type activities against other guilds, but it is a lot easier to believe that some one did something when you see them(or someone that is disguised as them) do it, rather than hearing, \"oh, so-and-so did something. You\'ld better get him/her, and his/her guild as well!\"

Another worry of mine, is secret charecters. If someone from one guild, makes a seccond charecter, and gets it into another guild, then breaks it up from the inside, or uses that charecter to gain IDs, passwords, secrets, etc. It always bothered me when people did that, but there isn\'t much that can be done to stop it. Guild leaders just have to be intelligent enough to spot shady charecters.

It\'s my opinion that if someone was able to do that to a guild, the current leader is not fit for his position, so their better off :P

As for secret words, it could work...but would be less fun and less challenging for someone to get ahold of \'em

It might be impossible to catch secret words, because I am assuming that you can \"whisper\" to a certain player and nobody else can hear.  (Perhaps not yet, but I bet it\'ll come soon.)

That way you can only learn secret words if the person slips up, and then it will have nothing to do with skill, just luck.

But IF a secret word is learned, then anyone who is told can use it, unlike an ID card.

Perhaps the same skill that will be used in writing scrolls and such could be used for forging things. (If there is such a skill.)

This \"whisper\" feature is called \"/tell\" and exists even in Atomic Blue already.  Yes, I would recommend that as a method for secret words.  However, the problem will be how to discover that the other person is also a member so you can give your secret word to him without him learning it if he is NOT a member.

Normally this is done through subtle things and done in public so that no obvious overtures have to be made by either party.

Imagine if the secret code was that members always capitalize the first letter of the last word in a sentence when they ask a question... or they always use the other player\'s name at the end of a sentence.  Or maybe when they meet someone, they always answer \"Fastastic to meet you, and well met!\" and if the other person responds \"Well met indeed!\" then both parties know they are in the group but others wouldn\'t necessarily learn anything.

These are how true secret societies work (not that I\'m in one *cough*) but there you go.  Hope it helps,

Sounds complicated Venge, but I like it. What I really don\'t want to see, however, is what was in EQ, and UO, where a person\'s guild affiliation appears with their name. That kills a lot of how guilds work. On the idea of the talking, and secret words bit. There\'s going to be guild-talk where only guild members can hear. So what\'s the point?

I always kinda liked that you can see a players guildname beside their avatar name in EQ. Maybe a feature of creating a guild could be that having the guild name/symbol on constant display would be a choice of the founding members on guild/clan creation. That way some guild/clans could choose to display their status while others could employ the secret word method.

You might need to talk to an allied guild\'s member to get a discount, thus you need some kind of ID like passwords.

I was thinking of non-guild societies such as the BISM.

I agree with Fiere that guild tags should be displayed unless a user is specifically in \'anonymous\' mode.
