New Command - /where
« on: November 15, 2005, 09:54:11 pm »
We all know about /who to see whos online, but we don\'t know where that person is. /where would be a good addition to finding out where a specific person is, or just /where to find out where every player is, instead of looking for hours to try and find a person [especially if they are AFK]

Well, /tell is completely OOC, so if you want to bump into a person and have a roleplaying session, theres your answer.

No...I meant, you can\'t really /tell with a person and setup a time and place to have an IC chat, so if you use /where and find the location of the person, you can go there and roleplay...If that makes more sense

/where would destroy all roleplay hunts, pursuits, hide-and-seek-games, and etc. It\'s a horrible alternative to maps and compasses.

You want to know OOCly where someone is? Send them a /tell and ask. If this is for OOC purposes and RP organization, they won\'t mind.

Are you trying to say /where would be more ic than /tell ?

And I like how you answered jose\'s post without actually answering it...
Made me grin :P

I\'m with Draklar on this one .. I don\'t see how a /where command is any more IC than a /tell command. Why don\'t you just do what I do if you\'re looking for someone? Ask the people around. If I\'m looking for someone I ask others if they haven\'t seen him or her.

there is already the /POS option which gives your coordinates and sector - can\'t you just use that and then send a /tell?

Precisely. /where would be even less IC than /tell (if that\'s possible). What good would it do if you could find someone who is AFK? They\'re AFK, so no RP can arise, anyway.
Would it be more realistic if you \"just knew\" where someone is so you can then \"bump\" into them? No.
For me, /tell for setting up RP has worked flawlessly all the time. All legitimate sorts of uses for /where can easily be replaced using /tells, and the non-legit uses aren\'t wanted, anyway.

Now, if that command was actually an implementation of a tracking skill, then things would start being likable, but that has been discussed already and the OP didn\'t hint at it, so it likely isn\'t.

The GM window lists all online players and their locations...  there\'s a button next to the list to teleport to any player... and we can turn invisible...  :D

Let\'s just make sure that there is absolutely no invisible teleporting without true legitimate reasons, \"curiousity\" not being one of them ;)

what if people dont want you to find them.

why would you need to find them.

if they want you to find them they can tell you where they are if you ask them.
<Rux> i wish i could say that narrows it down, but the internet is one freaky place

Karyuu, watch your back  :P

As almost everyone else has said, /where is not a great command and is not needed. If your guild mates, theres a column showing you where all your guild mates are. If you want to hang out with each other a lot then create a guild and use that as a /where  :)

Of course that\'s not a real legitimate reason for a guild either, let\'s not forget :)
