New Planeshift Skin
« on: November 21, 2005, 10:38:10 pm »
For those who still havent tried it or have had problems installing the new skin, I\'ve made an executable installer for the skin.

Now instalation is as easy as running the executable.

1-Click here to download it

2-Run it

3-Enter the planeshift installation path (defaults to C:\\Program Files\\PlaneShift Crystal Blue)

(setup program then runs automatically)
4-Click the \"skins\" button

5-Select \'bauraksered\' from the drop-down menu

6-Enjoy

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Im making a new thread on this for a few reasons.

First, I\'ve noticed alot of people are having problems installing the new skin and the installation instructions were all scattered in the old thread.

Second, I didnt like the title of the old thread since it no longer applies.

Third, it was just getting too long.

So I intend for the old thread to fade away and be forgotten

Awesome job.  Please let us know of anything we can do to make customizing the GUI easier.

I think the main thing would be loading gui definitions from the skin zip... That way Cherppow\'s lovely char creation screens could be used

To Baurak : You should make a zip or .tar.gz archive with installation instructions for those of us not using windows :P

Myself I chiefly use mac os x and linux >.>

Yep, an exe only distribution isn\'t a good idea. Sure, there are ways to overcome that, but why make it more hassle for other OS users than necessary. Also, the thing looks to me as if it was merely extracting files into the respective folders, which wouldn\'t require more than a properly made zip (or tgz), so the .exe version could be provided for convenience and fault tolerance while a mere zip would work for the other OS users and those who, like me, are wary of executing foreign files.

If you wish our guild will mirror it as well for you and maintain a linux/mac tar.gz for download.

Acraig - it should be possilbe to specify alternate xml files in a skin in order to make gui customization easier.  That way modified xmls would not get overwritten each update, and wouldn\'t have to be manually switched out to make different skins work.

Yes, please do :)
Right now im only a few MB\'s short of my monthly bandwidth limit. Also, it looks like a tar.gz would be a popular option.

Acraig,
as for making the modding easier.

1 what induane said was right on, being able to specify alternate xml\'s on a skin-by-skin basis would be a fantastic addition.

2 it would be nice to be able to re-load the skin(and xmls) while in-game. It is quite a hassle when you are editing xml files to have to reload the entire game when you are making small adjustments and such.

2 A way to run the game when the server is down. It has been suggested that I compile and run my own \"test server\" so that I could work on the skin even when the server is down. Its a possibility, but wouldn\'t it be nice if that wasnt the only option?

of course you could also address points two and three by making a separate program that just loads the gui on a black background. and you could reload it as many times as you need to. That would be the ideal solution, but I have a feeling it wouldnt be very high on the to-do list considering everything the devs have to worry about already. It would also be pretty complex considering you would basically have to build it from scratch. So maybe the best way to get this done would be for me to take up programing :P

Anyway, thats what you get for asking :D
