Actual map maker
« on: November 26, 2005, 06:46:56 pm »
ever wanted to contribute to planeshift? not a programmer? then a map maker would be useful use delicate bump commands and raises ot make your map put down houses, monsters, weapons, treasure and even customise new weapons stats and engravings i think this would allow everyone to make a contribution( i know i would as an almost a programmer(don\'t really know how to do the proper stuff yet but can write text based games))

Good Idea, but think about how much people would abuse the whole treasure and weapons thing. They might make a Uberweapon and then only they would know where to get it. Then the game would feel alot like Second Life. All in all though, it is a good idea

maps would be \"checked\" for such abuse and modified or not used. they could be policed just like anything else.

It\'s easier for devs to just create their own maps. That way they don\'t have hundreds of fan-submissions to check (probably in great, tedius detail), modify, and all the rest of it. It also ensures the game stays on course, in terms of the settings and area design.

hmmm... perhaps only longtime players could use this feature? so that their claims could be taken seriously.

Longtime players, if they are serious about contributing, tend to just join the team :)

this would give those with little or no programming experience a chance as if i was six i couldn\'t write a map could I? though i\'m not sure what the definition of \"joining the team\" is.

It means becoming a developer. Officially :) Though you definitely need to have skill to do so, but generally to contribute anything requires skill.

Or submit \"constructive criticism\".

Ok ok, you win. It\'s complaining. Call it what you will, it\'s still just as entertaining.

I think this would be an entertaining idea, to make a map making feature in game. Really I\'m ready to create an alternative thread describing a very usefull and entertaining feature that enables players to make small simple black and tan (to simulate parchment or tan hide) peices of \"art\" that can be sent to players, or left on the ground (at a fee of course for regulation and bandwith conservation) for anyone to be read or picked up.

*EDIT* In retrospect this feature would not only be fun, but usefull in the introduction of a whole new career. Advertisements would be more usefull if decorated in an artistic fashion, therefore, anyone with a creative touch could certainly add flair and pizazz to an otherwise unsightly peice of parchment. This could all be done for a fee to the artist, of course, and would eventually benefit both the artist and the requesting player.

A small engine similar to those of certain online pictionary clones would be sufficient to create these IMO. But perhaps I\'m just looking too far into something that will never even be considered for an ingame addition.

This would be usefull for small tips, hints, instructions, in game event advertisement, and general fun. It could be abused heavily, I foresee this much in advance. However, with heavy rules and regulations this could be a very unique addition to Planeshift.

We definitly need tools like a map maker.  But at the moment we simply cannot create something like maya or blender to do that.  Any tool we would develop we be, well, crap for a long time compared to them.  But we need it to allow us to create levels more easily.  Like the ability to add items, action locations, events, etc.  And this will go beyond a simple map maker since it will be connected live to the server.

yes i know map makers are hard i know people who tried them one could only get it to put down a tank on the same spot again and again and again, the others just crashed, but it was just a suggestion, i could try to learn the basics(you\'d have to add the animators but i might get the menus and variables working but i won\'t be able to do it for a while yet)

i\'m using something called blitz3d it\'s very easy and is based around c and basic so once i learn it i should be more... flexible.  I am making good progress right now although i still struggle with 2d animations.
