World/Planet?
« on: December 17, 2005, 06:21:11 am »
Hihi,

I have been following this game for a year or 2 before combat was introduced. Also played for a few months on diff. characters
 (Aidenki, Darksteel, Lliad, Lyfe)

atm I\'m playing FFXI (Windowed) and I was talking to a friend about Planeshift. He asked me \'What is the name of the world?\'
This, I could not answer. So I checked the site and searched around a bit...but could find no answer (didn\'t check to much, nor did I use \'search\')

The site tells us the name of the game, Planeshift.
The name of the big underground city, Yliakum.
Beyond that, Stone Labyrinths, Kadaikos and Pradesha.

So err...I guess my question is, whats the name of the world/planet? Planeshift? Hmmm.

Thanks in advance for replys =P

I can\'t quite recall, but I remember reading a story of how the crystal was created and the hollowed stalactite beneath via a point of view of the surface world. though I might have had some insanely screwed up dream from deprevation of diamonds and emeralds, best bet would be to get into IRC and catch the big boss on a spare moment nothing equals to the words of truth form the creator(s) :D

I\'ve always used the term Yliakum for the name of my characters world. It is more than just a big city, it is the entire stalagtite with all its levels and all its cities. But it isn\'t a world like we know it either since there are other places like the labyrinths as well. I guess their world definition is a bit different than ours but then again was our world definition at medieval times the same as it is now?

Yliakeans don\'t see a world as a round ball of dirt floating around in space, their world is what they know and for most that is probably just Yliakum.

And praised by storywriters who are forced to write things with limited world information :P

oooo\' thanks Moogie!

Ohm, I like it. Why isn\'t this public? It\'s not -the- most needed info, but still good for storywrites as Draklar said.

I\'d show illustrations and everything if I thought I could get away with it. ;) The reasons such information is kept private are trivial at best; Talad thinks it\'s better that players only know what their characters would naturally know if they lived within Yliakum. While this does make sense from a roleplaying point of view, it does somewhat limit the potential hype of PS and means that alot of creativity goes completely to waste, locked behind closed doors that nobody will likely ever view.

Being in the dark about 80% of all the information available on PS settings and design sucks. I know that because I used to be, before becoming a dev. Gaining access to that stuff really showed me how PS could achieve so much more positive reviews... if only people knew more info about it. There\'s some fascinating facts, and to say it has grand plans for the future would be a major understatement.

The ongoing mentality is that information will be slowly fed to people in the form of ingame books and maps, but I really can\'t see how that is enough. Keeping secrets in order to maintain a level of suprise and intrigue is definitely a must, but PS has many, many secrets that I don\'t personally see as important enough to keep out of general knowledge. Trivial little facts, tidbits here and there that would mean nothing to be put in public but help to maintain people\'s interest in the PS world. And, believe it or not, most of this was created at least three years ago.

How silly :|
I\'m pretty sure in case of Phinehas and alikes, the character knew much more about the world than the player himself (not that knowing more about Yliakum than what is given to players requires amazing knowledge). Like I said, taking such position is really, really silly.

Not to mention the pain for us writers =(

i agree. if needs must we can/will sign arcane legalesse-esc(esk? esque?) documents that say we won\'t spill the beans in any...  manner. well maybe not any manner, but the idea is there.

yes. we do need a writer\'s info package. don\'t know what would be in it. don\'t know how it would be distributeded. don\'t know who would get it.

but if all sorts of interesting and important details are being held like that. it does make writing good to great stories a lot easier. rather then the mediocre to very good that we have.

(got to stop reading those how to write books.)

*cough* My stories are great anyway >.>

You can always add things that won\'t be true for Planeshift. Although that can be helluva annoying for the writer when it is proven wrong.

that\'s what i worry about when i write. am i writing something that is wrong, or slightly off? will it be wrong in the future?

city names and such i can cope with. i just don\'t add them in. but other things like terrain types, and such. knowing if such things exsist allows us to write better and fuller stories...

*heads off to ponder a wish list item*

No offense, but I think we\'d all complain less if we were kept in the dark about being kept in the dark.  Ignorance is bliss to an extent.

That\'s a little silly, though.  There are no new forum mods needed, and many in-game mods (not naming names) aren\'t very active.  Out of the whole list, I\'ve only seen one online at the most!  Who wants to start a petition for freedom of information? :D
