I've been fed disinformation!
« on: December 30, 2005, 11:50:07 pm »
Argh!

All these years I have thought (and argued) that medieval swords weighed upwards of 20 pounds. I found today that few weighed more than 10, with the average around 4-5 lbs.

I ask forgiveness from those who I would have bashed in their heads over the weight of a sword (or was that the wurm online forums...)
Warning: Prone to common sense.

Everyone makes mistakes, but it takes great strength of character to admit mistakes with the same zeal as making them.  I applaud you.

I look forward to discussing things of interest with you on the forums.

Thats known as a \'Hand and a Half Sword\' in more polite company :)

There are probably weapons that do weigh over 20lbs, but they would be rare and more specialised than lighter sword and spears, and not as suited to prolonged miltary use in a long drawn-out campaign, just by virtue of the weight of the thing tiring the user. Mauls ( essentially iron or steel-banded sledgehammers employed as a hand-to-hand weapon ) would probably have weighed that much. Its the perfect thing for killing a dismounted knight in a jiffy in a way thats likely to destroy the morale and resolve of any remaining foes. The head of this one ( http://doityourself.com/store/6480065.htm, not a medieval one but a modern equivalent ) weighs 16lbs alone, with a handle long and sturdy enough to swing it effectively that would put it over 20 lbs probably.

The heavier lances ( not carried by hand but attached to a swivel-type mountpoint on the saddle ) and halberds are probably not heavy enough to be in the same category, these halberds http://www.slam.org/exhibits/armsandarmor/staff.html seem to max out at a bit over 6 lbs.

Any chemistry people know what volume of metal would comprise 20 lbs ( ~ 9 kg ) of steel and/or iron? It would be quite a hefty chunk I imagine.. shape it into a sword and whoever you hit with it is likely to be dead afterward. It doesnt quite match the lethality of 9kgs of plutonium though.

Lol...

Well yeah I\'m looking around for a claymore, don\'t know exactly how much one of those weighs, but whenever I get into weapon-stores and I lift one up...Dunno but those people in the old days, if they had to swing a sword like that all day I can imagine they didn\'t feel their arms the day after.

Weight doesn\'t really matter much, 6lbs is enough to kill your arms after a good day of swinging, stabbing, smashing, cutting, whatever. Oh, and practicing ofcourse :D

Oh btw, Drak, how much did you pay for the bastardsword?

I paid for it 200PLN, which is something like US $60.
If I lived in US I could get stuff cheaper than that and have them of better quality. However I\'m not even sure if US has any battles going on in season o.O

And I wouldn\'t worry about swinging swords as much as wearing full armour... The latter seems to tire me much faster :P

Yeah well that\'s my problem too, here in Belgium it\'s not easy to find good swords, so I would want to order with Swordsonline. The only problem is that they ship from the US, so they sell cheap, but I have shipping costs of like US $70..This means, I want a scimitar of $50, and I have to pay $120 which I don\'t have :D

And the full armour...Heavy armour was mainly worn by cavalry, and if they got pushed of the horse it was quite impossible to get up again. People on foot wore lighter armor, which was then again easier to get through. But I can imagine, full armor is heavy, not even to mention the heat if you had to fight in blistering sun ^^

Well by full I meant covering all the body, rather than the plate.
I don\'t wear heavy, only medium armour :P

And I\'d rather buy swords at ebay... Stuff is cheaper, shipping costs lower and the swords look outstanding anyway.

Problem with ebay is that I don\'t always find what I want...I\'m kind of picky I guess...Swordsonline and other professional sites have mainly everything, you know...I\'ve been looking around.
Other that that I\'ve had some bad experiences with ebay :D

You...WEAR...medium armor right? Okay, explain :D
