Dream Theater really rock
So do Metallica.
Slayer > Metallic x 10.
I think that there are a few traps to be weary of. First, is those people who are usually younger and are just coming out of listening to the popular metal-influenced bands. So they were listening to Slipknot and Greenday, then they discover Slayer and Black Flag. All of a sudden, those slightly more obscur but still well known bands are the new cool for them, and they look down on the crap they were listening to before.
The thing to remember is that no matter what, there\'s always more out there for you to discover! So while you\'re listening to popular bands like Metallica and Dream Theatre, don\'t forget that there\'s plenty of stuff out there which you\'ve never even heard of and which you might like even better!
I\'m listening to the Dream Theater song right now. I haven\'t heard it before, but I\'m not too impressed. The musicianship is good, but the song itself is rather generic. There are parts which are seem to be taken right from Tool, but I\'d rather listen to Tool. The heavier parts aren\'t really that heavy given how the metal tradition has developed and progressed.
Try taking Pig Destroyer or Agoraphobic Nosebleed on for size for instance. Grindcore is mostly atonal like Meshuggah, only it\'s crazy intense. I\'m afraid I don\'t have any links to give you, but my favourite Pig Destroyer song is \"Towering Flesh\" if you have the opportunity to listen to them.
And this is the second trap -- stuff which is heavy or loud, but remains easy listening, like so many of the melodic death bands out there. It\'s heavier, it\'s louder, and it has distorted guitars - but it retains a pop aesthetic. To me, if you like melodic death but not heavier stuff, then you\'re not
really a metal fan. It\'s a bias of mine, but I think that there is truth to it. I think that there are a lot of people out there who simply want to listen to stuff which is more real than mainstream radio and which is more agressive, but they can\'t handle (appreciate?) the
really progressive forms of metal such as black metal and genres of death metal such as grindcore and extreme power metal.
I think that\'s enough rambling on my part. Oh, whoever sent me the dream theatre, I have 5 words for you: \"Black Rose Immortal\" by Opeth.
