The 4932752345 guitarists suck.
The drummers doing the same thing over and over again. (basicly 2 bass drums) :-P

There was a point in the song where i just heard eeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee for like 30 seconds from the singer.

Metal isn\'t how closed to causing death your music can come to. (and that was damn close i wanted to kill myself to stop the suffering in the middle of the song)

There are reasons bands like this don\'t get very famous, because they SUCK!

like the others said, listen to megadeth or something....

Actually, Emperor is an incredibly famous Black Metal band, and most black metal fans list them in their top 10.

All 8 of the black metal fans would put them in their top 10? wow
Lol Internet

hmm if you listen to the essence  by Vintersorg and still say that screaming never sounds good, I would be very suprised.

Replace what screaming there was with singing and it would be a good song..... so no, screaming never sounds good. :)

My Results:

Progressive Metal

Bands like Zero Hour, Watchtower, Dream Theater, and Fates Warning. Music is: Incredibly technical and virtuosic; only for the most talented of metal musicians. You have gifts and skills that others envy and therefore aspire to obtain and/or overshadow. You love the chance to show off and impress others, but you never lose sight of the goal. Why do something simply when you can do it over-the-top?!?

Sounds about right :D

My Result:

Death Metal

Bands like Vader, Hate Eternal, Malevolent Creation, and Hypocrisy. Music is: Brutally heavy music, usually devoid of most accessible melody and usually incredibly fast. You are capable of quite a lot and you enjoy the chances to make the most of your skills and talents. You?re not all that concerned about trends, but you know what you like. You are assertive and that shows up in everything you say or do.

But I do like melodies... and fast music too. In general metal is a bit \"hateful\" for my taste. ;)

We probably aren\'t going to do a better job describing the genesis and progression of metal than wikkipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_music

For my part, after reading everyone\'s posts, it is clear we all love what we know, and its funny to me that people still respond to metal (ooh, icky noise) like they did in 1982.

The only points I\'d make:
A) Wow Emperor sucks.
B)  To me.
C) Metal WAS very difficult to innovate in the 80s, for bands on the bleeding edge, such as Slayer, Megadeth, and even.../sigh...Metallica.  Crap like Emperor is simply retreading the same old tires and giving them another spin.  Metal you see nowadays is rote, and typical, and generic, and incredibly hard to listen to, even for people (like me) who grew up listening to RKL, CoC and Slayer between bong-hits.
D) Punk is waaaay easier to play than metal, but it can also sound muuuuch more pleasant without trying too hard.
E)  Anyone who wants to hear metal that is still largely accessible should listen to Slayer first and foremost--give it a chance, they grow on you like moss--wicked wicked moss.
F) Nu-Metal has ruined the \"primal scream\".  Emotion is no longer linked to angry screams, it\'s just the capstone to any cheesy disturbed song, chorus & verse.  oooohahahahah!
G) Then again, Slayer has some crappy songs, too.
H) Megadeth made two good albums: it is one of the mysteries of the universe how megadeth turned so crappy so fast.
I) Not all metal is so serious.  Type O Negative is considered \"doom metal\" by many, but have a surprisingly good sense of humor.
J)  I saw a block of Pantera videos the other night.  Man, are they gay?  Every video is essentially the band in a small room with no shirts on, sweating all over each other.  I used to think pantera was the be-all-end-all.  Now I\'m convinced they were just on the cusp of nu-metal.  Their songs, in any event, are almost sub-literate, but sound good anyway.
K)I\'m realising this post is going to seem really pretentious.  Sorry if I sound too judgmental.  The wikkipedia article is funny.  There\'s a pretty classic wikkipedia article on the \"heavy metal umlaut\" for those that are interested.

To me, sludge bands like the Melvins are just as tallented as those progressive metal bands which hold phds in their instruments.  It\'s about song writting, not how fast you can play arpegios.

And yeah, I also scored for death metal.

One of my favorite live-event moments was the Melvins.  It was that crappy lollapaloosa where Metallica headlined.  I was in North Carolina, and the Melvins literally (it was a pretty backwards venue--helicopters and police snipers, the concert resembled a prison \'cause the locals were terrified) made people stop and stare when they ripped into the most ear-piercing feedback I think I\'ve ever heard.  The rednecks who showed up to watch Metallica (and literally nobody else) were completely incredulous.  Priceless memory.

There\'s nothing \"over the top\" about Dream Theatre though.  They have good technique, but so do a lot of people.  And it\'s not over the top in terms of sound or song writing... not when compared to most death metal and black metal.

Listen to \"Empty\" by Emperor.  It\'s a much better example of black metal and of what Emperor is capable of in terms of songwriting and playing.

This is kind of a difficult topic for me because metal covers so many different bands.  I\'m working on a mix for the car right now, and in the name of variety this is what I\'ve narrowed the list down to:

anthrax
atheist
blood has been shed
candlemass
converge
darkane
death
decapitated
dimmu borgir
emperor
fantomas
helmet
ictus
kalmah
lord belial
megadeth
meshuggah
metallica
my dying bride
nile
paradise lost
pig destroyer
sound garden
the postman syndrome
tool
violent work of art

All of that would be considered metal, but there\'s still a huge variety of sounds.  So where does Dream Theatre fit in there?  How can you say anything universal about Dream Theatre with respect to other metal acts given the diversity that exists?  I think it\'s a dangerous thing to attempt.

What I got...

Progressive Metal

<.< I mean yeah I like that stuff to, but my real love is for black folk metal.

Another prove that such quizes are fun, but not to be taken seriously ....
