cartography where ? and how
« on: March 02, 2006, 11:27:11 pm »
OK,

How do I create maps ?  where do I buy paper and pen? or  what kind of resources are needed,

The biggest problem sofar with this game is that there are no explanations for what is needed for crafting.

No crafting tutorial  ?

so please,   explain ?  how do I start crafting different stuff.

for example.   cartography ? how does it work ?

another thing ? how Do I have to choose from start to even get the damn skill   omg

Neither crafting nor cartography work yet. Crafting is close to being done, but cartography hasn\'t even been tackled yet. That\'s why there is no guide :)

omg,, I wish I new how..   I would make it my self

*edit*

for someone who can just a bit of programming it should not be so hard.

what would it take ?

like ? one command line for the values of  the map img.
like? a command starts a script that makes x,y print 1 plack spot for evey 3rd pixel when the mouse moves and button is pressed down while in the map window, When releasing the mouse button is stops the script and the blackspots stay.  Then a button that appears when you close the map telling if you want to save the print made,  and an alternative script telling what happens when pressing yes and no..  and so on.

If I knew programming this would not take more than 1 hour to make..

then putting it in the source code and get it to work.. well  that should not be so hard eather...  or is it?

I\'m I totally wrong about this ?   do take in aspect that I do not know anything about programming.

Please avoid posting two or more successive posts before others have replied. Just edit your last post to add new information :) Thanks! --Karyuu

If you knew programming, you\'d do less suggesting and more working ;D I don\'t handle code at all so I\'ve just the tiniest idea of what it takes, but rest assured that if it would take a simple few hours to do, it would be done already.

Map-making and item-crafting is very, very complex.

Even in Python that would be hard. If you have never programmed, I suggest you try before calling the devs lazy bums. Once you program \"Hello World\" in Java, and then maybe do some more advanced stuff, you\'ll realize why PS is UNFINISHED.

How about automapping with cartography? With different details as you improve skill in cartography?

eg.
level 1- towns that you have visited (after acquiring skill)
level 2- roads that you have travelled (after acquiring the level)
level 3- roads that you have not travelled but have seen (such as forks)
level 4- locations that people told you about (not the connecting roads if you haven\'t travelled through them)
etc

Edit: Hmm... should have been in wish list...

...That really speaks for itself, you have no idea what you are talking about so how can you lay down all these dead certs such as \"If I knew programming this would not take more than 1 hour to make.. \"

It\'s not rocket science for f**ck sake.

I am not talking about any advanced system.

I am talking of a simpel map making utility.

Well anyway,  when I got the time I am gonna use \"for example Python\"  and make this damn  item that can be opened and turned into a player painted map.

If this turns upp to be an easy thing..  you all shall call me  your  absolute god for all eternity..  damnit.

If it will be hard,  I will give you all an apology and post on my own homepage,  when it\'s ready that I am really sorry for putting this thread upp at all.

I Don\'t think  making a map is that hard.

For the moment I will try to make an item that you can open and it get\'s bigger,  and you can use basic \"paint\" abilitys to paint your map on it  and after that save it.

it will not be able to raise any xp,  it will not even require any skill except the items paper, pen and ink.
\"this means I have to make 3 items \"

With these 3 items the player will be able to make a map.

Then I guess putting it into the source code of the game I guess that it\'s there the problem will be, But it can be solved also.

There is nothing impossible, somethings is jsut very hard but if you know how to do it, it isn\'t so hard anymore.

So if some one who knows how to make it would do it it would certainly spare me a hell of alot of time.

You better speak to someone like acraig, Talad, Vengeance, etc. if you\'re thinking of doing something like this. I assure you, again, that if it would be so easy, any PlaneShift community member with more knowledge on code and programming (and there are many) would have already contributed. The dev team doesn\'t want anything hastily put together, barely thought out, or built in a way that would not cooperate with the rest of their code or engine.

So I suggest you calm down and worry about something more important, like saving a whale or something.

I fully agree with Karyuu.
Mapmaking is very hard to do.

I have seen many maps around in the Guilds,
but no one has got a succesfull map yet.

Sure, Hydlaa plazaa can be made easier.
But what about the sewers and the dungeons?
They are very complex.

Nearly no one succeeded in making a map of the
Sewers or Dungeons yet.
You almost have to make a 3D or 4D map of it.

And it\'s also true that map-making is very much discussed in the past 9 months i am playing PS.

So please only talk about something you can do and
not what you wished you could do.

I am very glad we have programmers around that are trying to fix the many problems we find in PS.
They have a hard job and it surely pays lousy, as we all
are working free and donate very much time.
Greetings,

Tarel Barilele

If you REALLY want a map, gen get out a freaking piece of paper and pencil and DRAW it. It\'s not that hard, gosh darn it.

I\'m a programmer and I know:
Automaps are freaking hard to do!!

So there you have it. I once tried to make an autominimap and found I couldn\'t. Even with Python.

*edit*

\"Just a simple mapmaking utility\"

Define simple.
