If you read the stickies and follow directions, yep. If you just try to grab the game off the website, no. Right now, this is because the mirrors aren\'t up to date. Also, the updater doesn\'t set permissions when it downloads updates (unless you use my updater ;) ). But in general, it isn\'t a really big problem. The people that usually do experience hassle experience it because they aren\'t following the directions closely enough. ;)

Not usually \"hassle\" but sometimes delays when different team members are responsible for different stages of releasing things (like the mac binaries, for instance).

I\'ve found that I have less issues running PS on mac than I do on PC

While there are other problems here and there (as witness just read through this forum) the only major gripes I\'ve had with the Mac version are A) No sound (which I solve by dumping the contents of the \"music\" folder into a playlist, then turning on repeat/shuffle) and B) borked zoneinfo.xml (which may be fixed by now) in the 0.3.013 .dmg, which can be gotten seperately by searching the In Game Issues forum in a little .zip archive.

Within those bounds, though, it a Happy Mac Gaming Experience of the sort of which more are desperately needed.

Without citing the obvious other advantages of switching to Mac ....  :P Planeshift runs rather seemlessly on the Mac.
Except for the aforementioned bugs it is quiet smooth and the only thing which I can add to the list is that if you are with a one-button mouse you cannot setup a \"right-click\" for the contextual menu.
However this can be solved by targeting the npc and type the following command (if you need to give him something): /give

You must be thinking of another game.  In PS the contextual menu can be set up to option-click, or anything+click, however it does not work under the current release.

I will confirm here and now that i have no plans of ever getting a one-buttoned mouse.

Anyway, since all new Macs come with a mighty mouse this won\'t be an issue.
I hope that you will enjoy your new Mac, it will take some adapting as far as the OS is concerned but you will like it.  :]

I haven\'t ever used the Windows version of Planeshift, as I don\'t think they\'d appreciate me playing it at work ;) So I admit I can\'t compare the two properly, and everything I have to say should be taken with that big grain of salt in mind.

From what I\'ve read and experienced and learnt from talking to friends using Windows, however, I\'d say that Mac development is seriously slower. Some of this isn\'t directly the fault of Planeshift, but from the underlying CrystalSpace code... patches of which can take quite some time to filter down to Planeshift.

So far, I\'ve also found it very uncommon for a Mac new release to be out at the same time as the PC one... meaning you can be \"locked out\" while you wait days or weeks for it. And a number of ugly Mac bugs still seem to remain unfixed in the latest release (in the short time I played it before the updater wrecked it). But then, perhaps the Windows bugs are just as ugly.

If you truly want to judge it, I\'d suggest you read through the bugs reported in this forum, whether you think you can deal with them, and how quickly they\'re fixed.

Having said that, I wouldn\'t stake your switch just on one game... Macs are worth the switch, regardless! And perhaps the point is moot now that they\'ve worked out how to dual boot Windows on the new Intel Macs... you could always keep Windows around just for this game ;)

I can\'t agree more with wain. Switching to macs is well worth it. I switched at the time of OS 9 and I would not chage back to windows for nothing in the world.
You will experience a virusless, nearly bugless computer experience.
As far as PS is concerned it is true that you will experience downtimes between releases. However I must admit that it is well worth the wait.

I would also suggest that you check out the windows bug forum to compare with the mac specific bugs. ( the PS bugs, no the OS .... it would take you about 3 centuries to read the windows buglist  :P )

I can\'t say that my powerbook hasn\'t given me grief at one point or another, but it really is a fairly robust computer experience.  I\'m not a computer expert, but I find myself rebooting OS X only when I absolutely have to, and I was rebooting windows xp once or twice a day \"just \'cause.\"  My only issues with using a mac to game have to do with it being a laptop (which has its own limitations), not the OS.    Wish I had some loose cash to trade up for one of the macbook pros.  Those look pretty enviable from the vantage point of a G4 powerbook.
